Poland? HISTORICAL GEOGRAPHY OF POLAND..... In researching Polish ancestors it is important to understand what the boundaries of Poland were at a given period in time. Poland's geography has been redefined many times. Unless you understand these basic changes, it can be confusing to understand why your why your Polish ancestors who immigrated to another country would declare their country as; Germany, Prussia, East Prussia, Russia, Austria or Hungary. Your ancestors answer were politically correct, but it did not necessarily reveal their ethnic origin. They were of Polish descent, but they were caught up in the boundary changes associated with Poland's political history. They lived in an area that was not longer under Poland's control. In certain periods of history, Poland didn't even exist as a country.

Brief History of Poland and It's Geography You may be familiar with the current map of Poland (above). It is useful reference if you are trying to determine an area were someone is living in Poland today. However, it may not be a good reference for locating where your ancestors may have come from in Poland. This section will help to understand why. TABLE 1: Comparison 1660-1870

    Introduction
Independent between the two World Wars, Lithuania was annexed by the USSR in 1940. In March of 1990, Lithuania became the first of the Soviet republics to declare its independence, but this proclamation was not generally recognized until September of 1991 (following the abortive coup in Moscow). The last Russian troops withdrew in 1993. Lithuania subsequently has restructured its economy for eventual integration into Western European institutions.

    Lithuania Climate
The climate of Lithuania is transitional between maritime and continental. Weather conditions seem to be unstable, with frequent thaws in winter, and cloudy sky, damp and cool weather in summer. The average annual temperature
is about +6 °C. The average temperature of January is -4.8 °C, and that of July is +17.2 °C. The average annual precipitation level is 626 mm, which is higher on the sea-coast and lower in the eastern part. The climate in Lithuania is suited for horticulture. However, some problems occur with unstable conditions of overwintering and a short vegetation period. Geography
Lithuania occupies the western fringe of the East European Plain. Lowlands, which are prevailing on the area, are separated by hilly uplands (the highest point 292 m), forming several meridian-orientated stretches. There are numerous lakes, rivers and rivulets in Lithuania.
The most productive soddy calcerous soils, predominantly loams, and drained soddy clays are found in Central Lithuania. The western part is mostly covered by more humid acid soils, whereas sandy hills and woodlands prevail in Eastern Lithuania.
