HISTORY OF LITHUANIA
Lithuania's past is rich and marked by complexity. In the multitude of events, and their uniqueness and effect on neighboring nations, Lithuania can be compared to any large state. Perhaps, this is the reason why Lithuanians hold their history in great esteem. A Lithuanian engaged in an explanation of the present will often digress into historical comparisons and analogies. The legends, wars, battles and political events are intertwined with songs, have found their way into literary works, and have provided the inspiration for movies, plays and art works. Of course, these popular and artistic representations are sometimes hardly different from mythology. But who is to deny that mythology is a part of life?
Lithuania Tour Selection
From ancient times to World War I
The Baltic tribes established themselves on what is presently known as Lithuanian territory during the 7th-2nd centuries BC. Many centuries passed, however, before the name of Lithuania appeared in records for the first time, in AD 1009, in the Annals of Quedlinburg.

I. Politics Secretary C.Powell in his meeting with Lithuanian Foreign Minister A.Valionis praised Lithuania‘s support in the war against international terorrism

Minister Antanas Valionis and Secretary of State Colin Powell held a meeting on Friday, January 23, in Washington, D.C. Secretary Powell thanked Lithuania for active support and practical participation in the fight against international terrorism. Lithuania alongside with Western allies participates in peace support operations in Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans. The meeting took place on the eve of Secretary Powell‘s trip to Tbilisi and Moscow, and therefore the Secretary was particularly interested in Lithuania's experience of its cooperation with Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and South Caucasus. Ministers exchanged their opinions on how Lithuania, which will be joining the EU and NATO this spring, could contribute to increase the efficiency of both organizations. Valionis expressed Lithuania‘s appreciation over the U.S. enduring engagement in the Nordic- Baltic region, and emphasized the importance of the e-PINE (Enhanced Partnership in Northern Europe) initiative in this context. He invited the U.S. State Department to send its senior representative to the e-PINE Political Directors meeting to be held in Vilnius in May.

The aim of the studies is to teach students to work with various historical sources (including sources in foreign languages), to help them to acquire the habits of original work and scientific research. The history studies programme is directed not only at analysing the history of the Baltic States, but also at pre-historical and historical problems of the region (Samogitia, West Lithuania). A great deal of attention is paid to the analysis and violation of certain stereotypes in Lithuanian history, and how these attempts influence historians and historical studies of other countries (Poland, Germany). Language and Culture
Lithuania Table of Contents Like Latvian and Old Prussian, the Lithuanian language belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. The size of the territory in which Lithuanian was spoken shrank considerably through the ages. Today it is roughly coterminous with the boundaries of Lithuania except for some areas of Lithuanian speakers in Poland and Belarus, and except for the diaspora living in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Latin America, Australia, and even Siberia. The medieval Lithuanian rulers did not develop a written form of the Lithuanian language. The literary Lithuanian language, based on a southwestern Lithuanian dialect, came into use during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, replacing the use of the Samogitian, or western Lithuanian, dialect. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the use of Lithuanian was confined mainly to the peasantry, but the language was revived subsequently. In 1988 it was declared the official language of Lithuania, as it had been during 1918-40 and the early years of Soviet rule. Lithuanian folk art, especially woodcarving and weaving, contributed to the growth of Lithuanian artistic development. Traditionally, Lithuanian folk artists carved mostly crosses, wayside chapels, and figures of a sorrowful Christvery symbolic and characteristic of Lithuanian crossroads. Under Soviet rule, which outlawed religious subjects, woodcarvings became sec-ular. Today, Lithuania's roads and gardens are dotted with wooden crosses, poles, and other carvings.

(Updated April 21st, 2002) The Face of the Community
There are no records to show how many Lithuanians had lived at the Treasure Coast of Florida before new Lithuanian arrivals settled down in - then - a small coastal town of Juno Beach in 1969. Succesful motel business by some of them aroused the interest of their friends in the North to spend their retirement in the Sunshine State of Florida. Soon after, the new arrivals established their homes up on the hill overlooking the Atlantc Ocean. It is fair to say, the Lithuanians may have provided an impulse for further development of Juno Beach. Those Lithuanian settlers soon began organizing their cultural, social and religious life, in order to survive as an ethnic entity. First, the Lithuanian Retirees Club (now defunct) was founded. In 1975 the Chapter of the Lithuanian-American Community, Inc., was organized and charged with cultivating the Lithuanian culture among its members, as well as acquainting their neighbors with some of its ethnic features. Retired priests volunteered to provide Sunday Mass and other religious services in Lithuanian. The Choir

    Lithuania History and Culture
History The ancestors of the modern Lithuanians were known as Balts and probably reached the area from the south-east around 2000 BC. By the 12th century the Balt peoples were split into tribal groups, all practising nature religions. The two main groups in Lithuania were the Samogitians in the west and the Aukstaitiai in the east. In what is now south-west Lithuania and in neighbouring parts of Poland were the Yotvingians, also a Balt people, later to be assimilated by the Lithuanians and Poles.

    Lietuviškai SOCIETY OF MEDIEVAL LITHUANIA
    Society of Medieval Lithuania: Introduction
Medieval Lithuania is a distinct medieval world, which does not fit in a traditional scheme of medieval European history. In the Later Middle Ages (14–15 th centuries) Lithuania was among the greatest states of Europe, an empire uniting large areas of Central and Eastern Europe. At the same time it was the last pagan state of Europe which accepted Christianity only at the end of the Middle Ages. Lithuanians in the 7-8 th centuries The society of Medieval Lithuania and its culture were marked by their military character. That was predestined by the necessity of defence against the military pressure of Catholic Europe. Lithuania not only managed to resist this pressure, but also took possession of large areas of Christian (Orthodox) Ruthenia. That was connected with the search for “life power”, which ethnic Lithuania lacked for during the war with the Crusaders. At that time the Ruthenian lands were devastated by the Tartars, disunited and comparatively easy to subjugate. That gave Lithuania a chance of survival, but governing such large territories was impossible without making compromises with the local inhabitants.
The Wars of the Cross diverted the development of the Lithuanian society to an unnatural direction. Lithuania had to refuse the unification of the Baltic lands and search for support in lands alien to it in terms of ethnicity and religion. Undoubtedly, that laid down a basis for religious tolerance, which was a characteristic feature of Lithuanian culture for long centuries. But that also impeded the effective development of Lithuanian national culture in the future.

After becoming the EU member state, in 2004-2006 alone, Lithuania will access over 5 billion Litas of structural funds designated for helping underdeveloped EU regions. The Lithuanian Ministry of Finance is currently working on the Single Programming Document, which will set the framework for Lithuania's access to the funds. As the experience of EU member states demonstrates, culture and tourism present highly effective means for achieving the goals of structural funds. Investments into culture, heritage and tourism contribute towards broadening the opportunities for alternative practices and activities in Lithuania. Increasing local potential also means reducing regional underdevelopment and boosting the confidence of people in the future of their own land.
