The Ministry of Culture was established in 1994, when the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture was divided into two ministries. The administration of the cultural affairs of Lithuania is on two levels; central (the Ministry of Culture) and local (the districts and municipalities). The main task of the Ministry is to ensure the historical continuation of Lithuanian culture and to create conditions for its development and expression. The Ministry maintains national and some regional institutions: the National Philharmonic Society, Lithuanian Folk Cultural Centre, the National M.Mazvydas Library, 12 state theatres and three national museums. A Training Centre for Cultural Workers has been established for improving the professional skills of cultural workers. There are several consultative institutions: the Board of Culture and Art, the College of Culture Self-Government and expert commissions in each section of the Ministry. Some independent institutions are administered by the Ministry, including: the Committee of National Awards for Culture and Art and the National UNESCO Commission. The Monument Protection Department is responsible for cultural heritage.

Culture Not so Unified
Poland and Lithuania had been joined for nearly two hundred years in personal unions, in dynastic unions, and now in a constitutional union. The wording of the Union of Lublin called Poland-Lithuania the "Commonwealth of both nations." However, with this most permanent union, it is important to note that the culture of Poland-Lithuania was not as homogenous as it sounded.

Languages
There were two very distinct language groups in Poland-Lithuania: the Slavic languages and the Baltic languages. The language groups were not even from the same language families. Along with these two language groups, there was a diverse smattering of other languages. Slavic Languages. Polish, a Slavic language, was the dominant language in Poland-Lithuania, with 40% of the population speaking it. All of the nobility accepted it as the main language and "Polanized." Ukraine also became predominantly Polish-speaking. Old-Byelorussian was another Slavic language, found in the territories of Ukraine and Byelorussia (Belarus); it was spoken mainly by the peasants.

Content: Legend The language The religion The  first Lithuanian book ... Land of Crosses Lithuania stretches along the Baltic Sea for 99 kilometers. Especially beautiful is the scenery of the 98 km long (of which 54 km belongs to Lithuania) and 380 meters to 4 km wide Courian Spit, which separates the Courian Lagoon from the Baltic Sea. The largest objects of interest of the Curonian Spit are their sand dunes.
The sea was never friendly for people. There was always a fight of nature forces. A century ago the large forests were cut down here. The relieved winds carried and poured the high hill-dune. These dunes travelled and moved to the Courian Lagoon and burried about 12 fishermen villages.   The nature of the Courian Spit is marvelous. There are places, where one sees only sand and sea, where from the eye turns. It is a true " Lithuanian Sahara ". The majestic dunes achieve in parts a height of 50 - 60 Metren. Content Legend
In ancient times there lived, on this Baltic Sea beach, a beautiful virgin, the giantess Neringa. She had a good heart. She rescued the fishing boats from a storm, helping them reach the shore. She wasn’t always successful; many boats sank and fishermen drowned. There Neringa decided to help mankind by splitting up a part of the sea, where the Nemunas River empties into it. She brought entire dunes into her apron and heaped up an enormous wall.

About the Program Producer

Chicago Stories Archives

The compelling story of Chicago's Lithuanians and their struggle to escape economic hardship, uncertain politics and religious oppression is told on this installment of WTTW's Emmy Award-winning series Chicago Stories . The program features a special guest narrator of Lithuanian descent: Chicago Bears' football great Dick Butkus.
Like countless other prominent Lithuanians, Lithuania's current president is a man who spent the better part of his life right here in Chicago. Over the last century Lithuania's history has been rocky, but through it all, Chicago has been a safe harbor. The city is home to the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, the Lithuanian World Center, and the only Lithuanian-language daily newspaper outside of Lithuania. More Lithuanians live here than anywhere outside Lithuania itself.
Almost 800 years ago, Lithuania controlled much of Eastern Europe. Since then, however, it has been plagued by the wars and political intrigues of its larger neighbors: Poland, Germany and Russia. By the late 1800s, Lithuanians had begun immigrating to America in large numbers. They were attracted to Chicago by the availability of jobs for able-bodied people. They came with a strong work ethic and provided muscle for the "City of Big Shoulders."

T HE S OVIETIZATION OF L ITHUANIA
In October 1939 the Soviet Union returned Vilnius to Lithuania, and in the summer of 1940 annexed the country. The returning of Vilnius to Lithuania was very significant to Jews, too. On the one hand, over 80.000 Jews inhabited Vilnius and its area, therefore the number of Jews in Lithuania substantially increased and reached almost a quarter of a million (together with war refugees from Poland). On the other hand, the disappearance of the boarder separating Jews in Vilnius from the rest of Lithuania disappeared resulted in wider contacts and enriching of culture. The Sovietization of Lithuania cause huge harm to Jewish culture. Yiddish culture was so far not persecuted, nonetheless, everything that had been created in Hebrew was banned, all Hebrew institutions, yeshivas, schools (children transferred to Yiddish schools), all public organizations, all parties. All Yiddishists' organizations were also band, all newspapers suppressed, except for one, which became Communist party's tool. Libraries were cleaned from "harmful" books, among them there were works by the great historian Shimon Dubnov. A lot of Jewish scientists, politicians and others arrested, deported. A famous publicist, the editor of the "Vilner tog", one of the outstanding linguists of Yiddish Zalman Reizen was imprisoned and died in jail.

COSMOLOGY OF THE ANCIENT BALTS Vytautas Straiþys and Libertas Klimka Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy, Gostauto 12, Vilnius 2600, Lithuania
Vilnius Pedagogical University Studentø 39, Vilnius 2600, Lithuania
Summary. The paper reviews the outlook of ancient Balts on the structure and origin of the world as reconstructed from the archaeological excavations, folklore, mythology, linguistics and chronicles. Conclusion is drawn that 4 - 5 thousand years ago the ancestors of the modern Baltic nations (Lithuanians and Latvians) had developed views on the relations between man and natural forces, on the origin of the world and its construction, based on religious and mythological notions. Later on, this cosmological interest developed into astronomical observations, finding the regularity of celestial phenomena, and calendar management.

and Gimbutienë (known in the West as Marija Gimbutas) In the fourth millennium B.C., artifacts made of polished flint with perforated holes, fishing nets and fired pottery appear on the coasts of Baltic sea: these products belong already to the Neolithic age. At that time in the continental Baltic area, people of two Neolithic cultures, Nemunas and Narva, were living. They differed in their pottery types and comparative distribution of bone and horn artifacts. Besides hunting, fishing and food-gathering, there were also rudiments of cattle-breeding and agriculture. From that period, we find considerably more art objects made of amber, bone and wood. Pottery is decorated with geometric ornaments and the imagery of animals, birds and men

Religion
Traditionally, Lithuania has been a Roman Catholic country. Although severely affected by Soviet repression, the Roman Catholic Church remains the dominant and the most influential denomination. However, Lithuania in the past has had two small but active Protestant denominations, the Evangelical Reformed (Calvinist) and the Evangelical Lutheran. In addition, Orthodox Christianity as well as Judaism have roots at least as old as those of Roman Catholicism. In 1991 a Western poll found that 69 percent of respondents in Lithuania identified themselves as Roman Catholics (in 1939 the percentage was 85), 4 percent identified themselves as Orthodox, and 1 percent professed Evangelical Christian beliefs. New in this self-identification was a large category25 percentwho did not profess any religion. Lithuanian journalists have also noted that twenty-one out of the 141 new members of parliament elected in 1992 left out "so help me God" from the oath when sworn in as deputies. In 1992 Lithuania's Roman Catholic Church consisted of two archdioceses (Vilnius and Kaunas) and four dioceses (Kaisiadorys, Panevezys, Vilkaviskis, and Telsiai). The church is presided over by Cardinal Vincentas Sladkevicius in Kaunas. For thirty years, Sladkevicius, then a bishop, was held by Soviet authorities in internal exile. The church has 688 parishes, two theological seminaries (one reestablished in 1990), and several con-vents and monasteries. There is also one Uniate, or Eastern-Rite Catholic, congregation.

The integration of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania into the European Union strengthens the cultural influence and the economic weigth of northern Europe, Mattias Akselsson reports from Sweden From two millennia of war to a new era of cooperation
Only 25 years ago a simple holiday tour around northern Europe would have been much more complicated than just getting on the plane. When anyone in the United States could move, live and work freely from snowy Washington to sunny Florida, Europe still was a complicated puzzle of dozens of travel visas, stamps, tolls, endless permits and small currencies. The history-rich Baltic capitals were cut-off the rest of the world by courtesy of the Soviet Union and the Nordic countries meant for the average person a remote and isolated territory near the north pole.
It took the Europeans two thousand years and many shameful wars to realize that people do have a better life in peace than in war and that cooperation creates more development than isolation. As the European countries leave aside their historical rivalries and parochial pride, many are now enjoying the benefits of integration and economic cooperation. Like in the US, anyone in the EU can now also move, live and work freely from snowy Finland to sunny Spain: British pensioners can retire in France, Portuguese students can attend Polish universities, Swedish citizens can work in Austria, etc.
