Country Info Lithuania Introduction Lithuania General Data Lithuania Maps Lithuania Culture ... Lithuania Time and Date Lithuania Culture Back to Top Like Latvian and Old Prussian, the Lithuanian language belongs to the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language family. The size of the territory in which Lithuanian was spoken shrank considerably through the ages. Today it is roughly coterminous with the boundaries of Lithuania except for some areas of Lithuanian speakers in Poland and Belarus, and except for the diaspora living in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Latin America, Australia, and even Siberia. The medieval Lithuanian rulers did not develop a written form of the Lithuanian language. The literary Lithuanian language, based on a southwestern Lithuanian dialect, came into use during the last quarter of the nineteenth century, replacing the use of the Samogitian, or western Lithuanian, dialect. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the use of Lithuanian was confined mainly to the peasantry, but the language was revived subsequently. In 1988 it was declared the official language of Lithuania, as it had been during 1918-40 and the early years of Soviet rule. Unlike Estonia and Latvia, Lithuania's cultural development was affected by Poland rather than Germany. The imperial Russian regime had an enormous impact on Lithuania from 1795 to 1915, and the Soviet Union had similar influence from 1940 to 1991. Direct contacts with western Europe also made significant contributions beginning in the sixteenth century. Lithuanian nobility in the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries and Lithuanian intellectuals since the turn of the twentieth century brought back ideas and experiences from Italy, Germany, and France. Also, between the two world wars independent Lithuania's direct communication with western Europe affected the development of educational and religious institutions, the arts and literature, architecture, and social thought. Lithuania's historical heritage and the imprint of the Western outlook acquired in the twentieth century were strong enough to make Soviet citizens feel that by going to Lithuania they were going abroad, to the West.

resurrection. A pleiad of new names in culture became wellknown in lithuania and beyond its borders (MK.Ciurlionis, O.Milasius).
http://amb.urm.lt/docs/20030723191251.htm
Due to Lithuania ’s specific geographical position, Lithuanian culture has developed under the glow of wars. Nevertheless, archaeologists’ findings attest to the fact that pagan Lithuanian culture was part of the culture of all the Balt tribes. Jewellery , arms and other articles made by pagan craftsmen, wooden architecture and other items from the remote ages, which can still be found nowadays, pose numerous questions to scientists searching for the roots of Lithuanian ethnic culture.
It is worth mentioning that Lithuanian culture has never been isolated. As early as in the 14th century, at the initiative of Duke Gediminas (as his letters attest), the first official contact with Central and East European cultures took place: Lithuania opened its door wide to European artists and craftsmen. The cultural heritage of the Mediaeval Ages, especially its later stage, is still abundant in Lithuania : the Old Town of Vilnius, an important object on the European level, has been included into the UNESCO heritage lists.

Cultural Cooperation
Estonian-Lithuanian cultural co-operation is also a part of the trilateral Baltic cultural co-operation. In 1994 a co-operation agreement between the ministries of culture of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania was concluded and the co-operation programs are elaborated for 2-year periods. Cultural co-operation is also a part of the trilateral co-operation between the parliaments (Baltic Assembly) and the governments (Baltic Council of Ministers). The Baltic Council of Ministers plans to organise a conference for cultural policy of the Baltic countries in October 2003 in Lithuania. The last conference was held in co-operation with the Council of Europe in Tallinn in 2000.
In 1999 one of the more important joint ventures took place in Lithuania – the XIII students’ song festival “Gaudeamus” (in 1995 it was held in Tartu, and the next festival will be in 2004 in Latvia). The international folklore festival “Baltica” took place in 2001 in Estonia, and in 2002 it will take place in Lithuania. The Nordic and Baltic joint song festival tradition dates back to Latvia in 1995. In 2000, the song festival took place in Norway and in 2002 in Klaipeda, Lithuania.
The Baltic countries have jointly introduced their culture abroad at various festivals (in 1996 in England and in France, in 1998 in the USA). In May 2001 the Baltic days took place in Skansen Open Air Museum in Sweden introducing the folklore ,handicraft and other spheres of culture. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania organised a Baltic culture festival in the Nordic countries in 2001, when more than 160 different concerts, exhibitions and performances were held in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland.
