Traditionally, we've used literature in English, language arts, and reading, but teachers are increasingly integrating books and other reading resources into math, science, social studies and other content areas. By drawing on the natural relationships among subjects, students can see how the curriculum connects to the world around them. Literature-rich units can also assist students in addressing essential questions associated with required educational standards as well as life-long learning concerns. First, images and questions prepare students for reading. Next, students listen to and study quotations from key literary works. Interpretive aids promote close reading and help students analyze themes and stylistic devices. Finally, students discover and write about these themes and devices in another literary selection.
Standards: Our American Literature materials map to state standards and to national standards in English language arts as established by the International Reading Association and the National Council of Teachers of English.

Goals The course offers an introduction to the Russian literature of the 20th century, as well as a thorough introduction to the two most important centres of Russia: Moscow and St-Petersburg. Content Students are offered a complete historical survey, which they have to absorb on their own. The texts, which are linked to that survey and give a representative idea of the different schools and themes in the literature of the 20th century, are read in Russian in class. Students also have to read a couple of literary works individually, partly in Russian, partly in translation. Students must read a minimum of text material.
In Knowledge of Russia, students study the cultural history of Moscow and St-Petersburg, as well as their current role in the country's demography, economy, tourism and politics.

Technology In The Classroom Email This Tutorial Print This Tutorial Technology In The Classroom REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE By: Jamshed N. Lam The literature is rich with examples of technology in the classroom. It helps the emergent learner, students with disabilities, students with language disabilities and the gifted child. With the cultural and socioeconomic diversity in our schools today, teaching effectively to these different levels of ability, background, interests, learning styles and modalities is a major challenge. We usually teach to the majority since it is somewhat impractical to try to tailor teaching to each student. Too basic an instruction will help the struggling learner but bore the gifted and visa versa. Thus poorer students are left hanging in their confusion, and the brightest students miss exciting challenges. With computers as tutors, each student has the ability to work at their own pace. Often, students are too confused or embarrassed to ask questions because they don't want to show their ignorance. With individualized computer instruction, students can always immediately request help if something is unclear. Computers help to make it more interactive. They are extremely effective with the struggling learners because they (unlike humans) have unlimited patience. Computers can teach via a multitude of modalities depending on the learning style of the student (Bennett, 2002).

Inspiration What does it do? How does this tie in with comprehension strategies in Grades 4-8? Inspiration's tools encourage active learning opportunities during which students clarify their thinking, organize and prioritize information and recognize patterns and relationships. For writing, the tools can help with brainstorming, organizing ideas, adding details and summarizing the main ideas. For increased comprehension of new concepts, the tools can help students trace plots, sequence events, expand their understanding of vocabulary words or thematic issues, compare and contrast, describe cause and effect relationships, and make personal connections with photos, clip art or illustrations. Most of the higher level thinking strategies that we ask students to apply in these grades can be practiced using the tools within Inspiration. Online Resources Online Examples

This outline of important details was constructed as a template in Inspiration by a teacher after reading a textbook chapter. Students are asked to rearrange the details listed below the main heading ideas based on information they read in the chapter. They can complete this as they read the chapter with a partner, or they can complete it after they read the chapter (with a partner or independently). After the details have been sorted, a class discussion will be held to see if everyone is in agreement about how the chapter is organized. Student can then use the Inspiration's outline tools to expand on the details, rewording phrases into complete sentences and/or restructuring the main idea and details into summary paragraphs. Students can also print out the final outline and use it as they study for a test.

It sounds deceptively simple, but many of today's overworked teachers in grades 4-6 could use a book such as Literature Circles: Tools and Techniques to Inspire Reading Groups to help them to implement literature circles as a language arts strategy. Rogers and Leochko are especially credible authors as they have made these techniques work in inner city schools where the trials and tribulations of teaching can sometimes overwhelm the best intentions. Teachers reading their book will likely be inspired to try this technique. Literature Circles: Tools and Techniques to Inspire Reading Groups Literature Circles: Tools and Techniques to Inspire Reading Groups will assist teachers to get started with this approach in upper elementary classrooms through the use of narrative texts. Talent Development Middle School
Student Team Literature Program
What Is It?
The Talent Development Middle School Student Team Literature program is a model for teaching reading, English, and language arts in the middle school grades. It changes both the instructional processes and the curriculum in middle grades reading and language arts to create a motivational climate and to further students' reading comprehension and understanding of good literature. The model couples a demanding, standards-driven curriculum provided to all students in 90 minute heterogeneous classes with an "double dose" computer-based reading/language arts curriculum for those students who need extra help to succeed in reading and language arts. The core Student Team Literature program includes:
  • Curriculum materials, consisting of award winning novels and plays;
  • Recommended instructional practices, peer assistance processes and assessments; and
  • Staff development, mentoring and advising to support the curricular and instructional reforms.
Because of the challenging nature of the curriculum, many students need extra help to succeed. Students needing extra help receive an accelerated learning class in addition to their regular 1 hour reading and language arts class. The "double dose" class replaces an elective course or gym for at least one quarter of each year.

Meeting the Needs of College and University Librarians, Professors and Students. As a teaching tool:
"I am a professor in a library science education program. One of the courses I teach is Cataloging. Because most library catalogs are not automated and require that items be cataloged into an electronic template called a MARC record, I teach my students to catalog directly into a MARC editor. As part of the process they use when they're learning to catalog, I tell them to look for an examplea good MARC record for the item they want to catalog¾and to look at how the cataloging was done before they create their own record. The CLCD database has been very useful for that purpose. Since many of the students are school library media specialists or will be, I tend to select children's literature to catalog, because they will use it in their work." Gyneth Slygh
University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire As a reliable and efficient resource:
"The CLCD is an invaluable tool in my position as an Assistant Professor of reading and children's literature. Having the database right at hand as I put together book lists and check the publication data for books makes my job so much easier. I can't imagine going from one hard copy resource to another to find what I need. The convenience alone makes it worthwhile for me.

A Humanities-Based Literature Program
by Sharon Soreson do remember: it did not make you an expert in "the arts."
After all, you love literature; you chose to become a teacher of language arts, not a teacher of the other arts. So let's mince no words with the real question: How can anyone expect literature teachers who have had little or no arts training to establish a humanities-based literature classroom? The answer is: No one expects you to, but when you hear the why and how, you may want to. Your colleagues, who, like you, have had little or no training in the arts, have had some exciting experiences that may entice you. So, how do you move toward a humanities-based program without going back for another degree?
