What is a review of the literature?
A literature review is an account of what has been published on a topic by accredited scholars and researchers. Occasionally you will be asked to write one as a separate assignment (sometimes in the form of an annotated bibliography see the bottom of the next page), but more often it is part of the introduction to an essay, research report, or thesis. In writing the literature review, your purpose is to convey to your reader what knowledge and ideas have been established on a topic, and what their strengths and weaknesses are. As a piece of writing, the literature review must be defined by a guiding concept (e.g., your research objective, the problem or issue you are discussing, or your argumentative thesis). It is not just a descriptive list of the material available, or a set of summaries. Besides enlarging your knowledge about the topic, writing a literature review lets you gain and demonstrate skills in two areas:

What Is A Review of the Literature? A
review of the literature is a classification and evaluation of what accredited scholars and researchers have written on a topic, organized according to a guiding concept such as your research objective, thesis, or the problem/issue you wish to address. Y our objective is not to rack up points by listing as many articles as possible rather, you want to demonstrate your intellectual ability to recognize relevant information , and to synthesize and evaluate it according to the guiding concept you have determined for yourself. Your reader not only wants to know what literature exists , but also your informed evaluation of the literature. To meet both of these needs, you must employ two sets of skills:
  • information seeking : the ability to scan the literature efficiently using manual or computerized methods to identify a set of potentially useful articles and books. critical appraisal : the ability to apply principles of analysis to identify those studies which are unbiased and valid. Your readers want more just than a descriptive list of articles and books.

This activity was funded by a grant from the National Safety Council. The specific objectives were: 1. Through epidemiological databases, other databases, and literature sources, review current population health, function, socio-economic, and mobility and driving status of American women aged 65 and over and make consider the issues in projecting future population function and mobility status. 2. Visualizing the World-Wide Web with the Navigational View Builder To help alleviate the problem of being lost in hyperspace, the Navigational View Builder is a tool that allows users to construct visualizations of the information space . To form effective view, it uses binding, clustering, filtering and hierarchization. The strategies analyzing the underlying space for forming the visualizations using a combination of structural and content analysis. Browsing Hierarchical Data with Multi-level Dynamic Queries and Pruning The PDQ Tree-browser (Pruning with Dynamic Queries) is a visualization tool designed to help users find the nodes that they are in search of, that meet their information need, when hierarchies contain several nodes . This tool displays trees in two tightly-coupled views. One view is a detailed view and the other is a summary. To filter nodes at each level of the tree, users can use dynamic queries. Dynamic queries allow them to quickly filter data. A controlled experiment, using 24 participants, revealed that pruning significantly improved subjective user satisfaction as well performance speed. Elastic Windows: A Hierarchical Multi-Window World-Wide Web Browser This publication presents a browsing interface with multiple hierarchical windows and efficient multiple window operations . This interface provide an alterable environment that helps users to quickly filter, organize, and restructure the information on the screen as their information need changes. This interface also displays overviews that give the user a sense of location in browsing history and provides quick access to a hierarchy of pages.

The body of literature selected for the literature review of this action project represents an eclectic collection documenting the use and support of portfolios in the K-12 classroom. Included in this literature review are books, articles and Web sites. The literature here includes the theoretical underpinnings for using portfolios in the schools and the benefits to the students. Also included is background information on how portfolios have typically been used; what is currently being offered to develop electronic portfolios; and how one may go about building a basic electronic portfolio with current software. This chapter will highlight what the literature has to say about the uses of different portfolios, whether paper, digitized or electronic. The literature examines different approaches towards the development of electronic portfolios and how portfolios can enhance student learning. Included is a theoretical foundation for using portfolios as supported by the multiple intelligences, the constructivist pedagogy, and neural cognitive sciences or what is more commonly known as brain research as these relate to the topic of electronic portfolios. Also included are important considerations that should be taken when using technology with education. At first glance through a library database search, one may be led to believe that there are a great number of articles and volumes of information on electronic portfolios; however, my primary search has confirmed the contrary. There is a large volume of information about traditional paper portfolios; however, in comparison, there is a paucity of literature on K-12 electronic portfolios. Of the literature on traditional portfolios, much of the content and context revolves around the form of "literacy portfolios" or the writing process portfolio as it pertains to the K-12 levels.

    I. INTRODUCTION
Child support provides an important source of income for many low-income families. Because state welfare reform policies have placed a stronger emphasis on work and adopted time limits on welfare receipt, increasing child support for families while they are on welfare and after they leave becomes even more critical for family self-sufficiency. Welfare and child support programs have long been intertwined. The child support enforcement program (CSE), Title IV-D of the Social Security Act, was established in 1975 primarily as a method of reducing public expenditures on welfare. If the family is on welfare, child support obtained from non-custodial parents by the CSE agency is used to reimburse the government for benefits paid to these families (i.e., cost recovery). Reforms in the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) and other policy changes have shifted the child support enforcement program toward a more family-centered mission.
