Buddhist Literature
Literary History of Sanskrit Buddhism
by G K Nariman Sanskrit Buddhist literature embodies many texts which date from an antiquity as respectable as any of the Pali Buddhist literary texts. But though Pali Buddhism is studied vigorously, Sanskrit Buddhist literature is looked upon with suspicion. As a result, no systematic history of Buddhist literature in Sanskrit has appeared.
The Literary History of Sanskrit Buddhism
intends to fill this gap in our knowledge of Sanskrit Buddhist literature. Divided into thirteen chapters, it gives detailed historical information on the works of Asvaghosa, Nagarjuna, Aryadeva, Asanga, Vasubandhu and other Buddhist scholars, both ancient and medieval. The author has marshalled every available source, including Tibetan, Chinese and Japanese translations of the Sanskrit texts and their exegetical expositions. Paperback. 393 pages.

The Valley of the Black Pig
The dews drop slowly and dreams gather: unknown spears
Suddenly hurtle before my dream-awakened eyes,
And then the clash of fallen horsemen and the cries
Of unknown perishing armies beat about my ears.
We who still labour by the cromlec on the shore,
The grey cairn on the hill, when day sinks drowned in dew, Being weary of the world's empires, bow down to you Master of the still stars and of the flaming door. The Wing Among the Reeds , (1899). Of this poem, Yeats wrote, "All over Ireland there are prophecies of the coming rout of the enemies of Ireland, in a certain Valley of the Black Pig, and these prophecies are, no doubt, now, as they were in the Fenian days, a political force. ...as a rule, periods of trouble bring prophecies of its near coming." William Butler Yeats `You seem very clever at explaining words, Sir,' said Alice. `Would you kindly tell me the meaning of the poem called "Jabberwocky"?' `Let's hear it,' said Humpty Dumpty. `I can explain all the poems that were ever invented and a good many that haven't been invented just yet.'

A mother's opinions about her children's beauty, intelligence, goodness, et cetera ad nauseam, keep her from drowning them at birth. Long, Lazarus My heart that was rapt away by the wild cherry blossoms will it return to my body when they scatter? Kotomichi I'm tired of all this nonsense about beauty being only skin deep. That's deep enough. What do you want, an adorable pancreas? Kerr, Jean Beauty is truth, truth beauty, that is all Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know. It's the MOP Literature Page! Important note: The URL of the MOP Literature Page will probably be changing at some point, though very likely not until October. If you would like to be informed of the new location, please email me (mfreiman at sas dot upenn dot edu). For those of you who don't know, MOP is an acronym for Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program, which, as you might imagine, is a summer program dealing with training people for mathematical olympiads. ("Mathematical olympiad" is a generic term for a competition in which competitors (usually high school students) are asked to solve pre-calculus mathematical problems in a fixed period of time, with complete solutions (not merely numerical answers) given to each problem.) In particular, MOP trains the members of the United States team for the International Mathematical Olympiad, as well as students who harbor the irrational, unrealistic hope of being selected for the team in future years. For more information about MOP than you ever wanted to know, click here Documents marked with an asterisk are at other sites. Documents marked with a caret contain enough inside jokes that you will probably not be able to understand them if you did not attend MOP in the relevant years. Documents marked with an exclamation point are completely incomprehensible to non-math types.

Don't Stop the Carnival... Every once in a while, someone has something that is truly meaningful, important, apropos, interesting, irreverent, or just plain funny. My hope to find quotes of interest that will make us both think a little bit more, question life, or enjoy living more. Action Let deeds match words.
Platus Think like a man of action. Act like a man of thought.
Henri Bergson
I never worry about action, only inaction.
Sir Winston Churchill
Heaven never helps the men who will not act.
Sophocles
Just Do It!
A Nike Commercial Move out man! Life is fleeting by.
Do something wortwhile, before you die.
Leave behind a work sublime,
that will outlive you and time.
Alfred A. Montepert Seize the day. Make your lives extraordinary.
From The Dead Poets Society Never mistake motion for action. Ernest Hemingway Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly. Robert F. Kennedy Up to a point a man's life is shaped by environment, heredity, and movements and changes in the world about him. Then there comes a time when it lies within his grasp to shape the clay of his life into the sort of thing he wishes to be. Only the weak blame parents, their race, their times, lack of good fortune, or the quirks of fate. Everyone has it within his power to say, "This I am today; that I will be tomorrow." Louis L'Amour Adventure Life is either a daring adventure or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.

For questions about subjectivity, telling right from wrong in a paper on literary topics, see "Discerning Right from Wrong in the Garden of Literature." The titles of plays, novels, magazines, newspapers, journals (things that can stand by themselves) are underlined or italicized. Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie and Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye don't seem to have much in common at first. If you're using a word processor or you have a fancy typewriter, use italics, but do not use both underlines and italics. (Some instructors have adopted rules about using italics that go back to a time when italics on a word processor could be hard to read, so you should ask your instructor if you can use italics. Underlines are always correct.) The titles of poems, short stories, and articles (things that do not generally stand by themselves) require quotation marks. Robert Frost's "Design" and Raymond Carver's "Cathedral" are compared in an important article, "Comparing Frost to Carver," which appeared in

Use quotations as evidence, not padding.
1. Periods and commas always fit inside quotation marks.
Phoenix seems heroic as she waits, "silent, erect and motionless," like a knight in "armor."
2. Most other marks of punctuation (semi-colons, dashes, etc.) go outside.
Phoenix Jackson seems heroic as she waits, "silent, erect and motionless"; she impresses with a still dignity.
3. Question marks go inside if part of the quote, outside if your own question.
"Who are you watching?" Phoenix asks the buzzard.
Why does Phoenix say to the boy in her daydream, "that would be acceptable"?
We first see Phoenix "far out in the country...with her head tied in a red rag."
