85. The Independent Literature Institute - "IndyLit"
A nonprofit co-operative for self-publishing authors and independent publishers.
http://www.geocities.com/indylit/
Independent Literature Institute Gertrude Stein, Ernest Hemingway, Virginia Woolf, Ezra Pound, and James Joyce are just a few authors who have published their own works. Independent literature is not a new genre, but a long standing tradition. Like independent film, literature written, edited, and published outside of the main stream deserves attention.
The Independent Literature Institute ("IndyLit") is a non-profit cooperative that seeks to enhance the public's understanding of independently published authors and their works. Through educational outreach programs, involvement in state and local literary venues, and information to assist independent publishers and authors, IndyLit hopes to enhance the exposure of the important work being produced independently.
Founded 1998 by four publishers of several independent literary magazines, the Independent Literature Institute has been working to bring to the public's attention the incredible literary renaissance currently occuring in modern society. In 1999, IndyLit.com was launched to highlight our efforts. However, after the .com bust, IndyLit.com lost its free service and went dormant for many years. Now, we've teamed with Geocities to bring it back (although, much smaller and with less information than we'd like). Welcome
to IndyLit
The deadline for the 2004 "Ulysses" Award has passed. IndyLit will be announcing the winner in early winter.

88. Argentine Literature, Literatura Argentina, Don Segundo Sombra, Ricardo Guiralde
Ricardo G¼iraldes's novel, Don Segundo Sombra . Overview and a passage translated from Spanish to English language.
http://www.ompersonal.com.ar/shortstories/donsegundosombra.htm
Don Segundo Sombra Ricardo Güiraldes The meaning of highlighted words is explained at the end of the passage.
Al final del pasaje se detalla el significado de las palabras resaltadas. Ricardo Güiraldes, the author of the piece you are going to read, was born in Buenos Aires on February 8, 1886.
In his father's country estate, La Porteña, in the province of Buenos Aires, Güiraldes had known and loved a typical man of our country whose character inspired him to write his inmortal book Don Segundo Sombra
In his book, which is full of the virile and rough spirit of our gaucho, he tells us "the story of a boy", says Waldo Frank, "who, like boys the world over, learns to become a man by taking life humbly and bravely".
Some ten blocks away from the central square, in the outskirts of the little village, the old bridge extends its arch over the river and joins the "quintas" to the quiet fields beyond.
That day I had come, as I often did
