The journal is the leading English language forum for scholarship in the field of modern Chinese literature. With the publication of Vol XI, the journal will change its name to Modern Chinese Literature and Culture marking a shift in editorial direction toward a broader cultural studies approach. There are good published bibliographies in the field of modern Chinese literature, but they inevitably suffer from the passing of time. The advantage of an on-line bibliography is, of course, that it can be continuously updated, giving the field up-to-date information about the most current publications. With the assistance of Jeremy Sieg, I put together this bibliography as a resource not just for readers of the journal, but for students, scholars, and general readers interested in the literature and culture of twentieth-century China. The bibliography focuses on English language materials, but also includes important Chinese-language reference works, literary histories, and the like. It is, I believe, the most extensive English-language bibliography of modern Chinese literature. The bibliography is organized into the following sections, to which one can link from the homepage's

Since its inception in the 1890s, the cinema has had a close association with literature, and has indeed often borrowed (in source material and technique) from the latter. Yet although ties have existed between the two media, the history of film has seen the development of its own narrative, dramatic, poetic and expository forms. This course will examine both sides of this dynamic: film’s convergence with, and divergence from, literary forms. In particular, we will look closely at central historical and formalistic aspects of literary and cinematic structures and genres; questions of film adaptation in historical, cultural, and social perspective; and historical and present-day censorship issues in literature and film. Because the relationship of film and literature has never existed in cultural isolation, along with our primary texts we will consider other art forms (such as music, painting, sculpture) where appropriate. In addition, we will consult various voices of scholars and critics analyzing the story-making powers, rhetorical “tricks” and other important characteristics of the verbal, visual and imaginative languages of literature and film respectively. The aim of the class is to provide you with broad historical and cultural knowledge about the multi-faceted relationship of film to literature, and literature to film, while also enabling you to gain more detailed insights into the individual literary and filmic texts that we will be considering as examples of this relationship.

Here are a few detailed and very useful bio-bibliographical handbooks for German-language literature and film. They focus on information on individual authors or directors (rather than themes, topics, terminology, etc.).
  • Deutsches Literatur Lexikon: Biographisch-bibliographisches Handbuch . Munich: Francke, 1968-. ("Kosch")
    Location: Baker/Berry Reference Z/2230/K6/1966 Library has vol.1-19
Very comprehensive. Good for relatively unknown authors. Brief biographies, discussion of the authors works, and bibliographies.Covers authors from the early modern period to the twentieth century.
Kritisches Lexikon der Gegenwartsliteratur . Munich: Text + Kritik, 1978- . ("KLG" on CD-ROM)
Location: Baker/Berry Reference (ask at desk) (also in paper in the German Studies Department)
Focus on post-World War II authors. Great first stop source for contemporary authors. Brief biographies, discussion of the authors works, and bibliographies.
  • Both "Kosch" and "KLG" are good first-stop sources for the advanced student. Kosch covers the entire post-medieval literature, KLG concentrates on contemporary authors. Both are author-oriented and offer biographical sketches, brief assessment of literary merits, and bibliographies of works by and about the author.

A Selective Guide to Reference Sources in the

"Film is more than the twentieth-century art. It's another part of the twentieth-century mind. It's the world seen from inside. We've come to a certain point in the history of film. If a thing can be filmed, the film is implied in the thing itself. This is where we are. The twentieth century is on film....You have to ask yourself if there's anything about us more important than the fact that we're constantly on film constantly watching ourselves."
Don Delillo ( The Names) This guide is intended to assist in doing basic film and video research. Included in the list are print and non-print sources, as well as library resources and services that will help you with your research. Ignore that man. We're attempting to update the thing, if only section by section as the mood waxes and wanes. - 5/20/04 Ignore that man behind the curtain. When he says "currently under heavy construction", what he really means is that he hasn't touched this page in over two years and can't find the motivation to move a brick, much less build a wall. - 2/10/04 This is currently under heavy construction. Things may move around but they'll still be here somewhere unless I can no longer find them on the web. My main goal in this version is to remove the artificial distinction I've made between glossaries, dictionaries and encyclopedias. I'm throwing them all together and distinguishing via subject categories, or at least attempting to do so without bollixing things up too much. An annotated listing of dictionaries, glossaries and encyclopedias that have some sort of version online or, if you will, a glossary of glossaries. All suggestions for additions are welcome and I really can't think of any reason why I wouldn't add anything new as long as it resembles a glossary, dictionary or encyclopedia, i.e. if I discriminate it'll be on the basis of form and most definitely not on the basis of content. Well, I might be prone to not list many more glossaries etc. of computer terms as we've got those coming out of our wazoo as it is. I've made some attempt at categorization that, as is inevitable with all such attempts, ends up somewhere between completely arbitrary and meticulously exact - hopefully closer to the latter extreme.

The Golem in Literature, Film, and Stage An article by Mark R. Leeper An Introduction Back when I was ten or eleven years old I used to get monster movie bubble gum cards. They usually had familiar stills from monster movies. One, however, puzzled me a bit. It looked like a human-shaped furnace with glowing eyes and a disproportionately big fist. It was labeled simply "The Golem." There was no explanation as to what the Golem was. Since I usually recognized what was on these cards, I filed in the back of my mind that there is something called a "Golem" that I wanted to know more about. It didn't occur to me to look in a dictionary any more than it would to look up "Godzilla." Dictionaries never have the really interesting words!
A month or so later my parents were going to a Yiddish play put on at the Jewish Community Center. It was called "The Golem," and was written by H. Leivick. Now I knew darn well that my mother did not go to plays about monsters that looked like human-shaped furnaces with glowing eyes and disproportionately big fists. She saw Bride of Frankenstein when she was growing up and decided on the spot that any story with a monster was stupid. It had to be just a co-incidence of name, right? Well, my parents came back from the play and told me I would have liked the story..."it was weird." It was about a rabbi who made a man out of clay. At this point I realized that the bubble gum card and the play were somehow related, and even more surprising, this monster was somehow a Jewish monster.

Latin America: Historical Studies Cinematic Studies Individual Countries: Argentina Bolivia Brazil Chile ... Venezuela Introduction After some preliminary discussions, the Latin American Studies Group at Brigham Young University’s Library initiated a Latin American film series during the winter semester of 1999. The objective of showing these films was to increase the exposure of films made in Latin America to both faculty and students and also to magnify the Library’s role as a useful resource, not only for its holdings, but also for its services. It was decided to begin the series with four films from Argentina, with plans to showcase other Latin American countries in future semesters. This bibliography was originally compiled as a part of the film series, with the goal being to offer a current list of materials on Latin American film housed in the Harold B. Lee Library of Brigham Young University. Thus, this bibliography is of necessity selective in nature. In order to be useful to a larger audience, the scope was broadened to include three additional countries Haiti, Peru, and Uruguay.
