Based on the idea that visual images are a language, visual literacy can be defined as the ability to understand and produce visual messages. Work in the field has centered on development of educational programs that train students' abilities to evaluate and create visual messages, as well as improvement of students' reading and writing skills through the use of visual literacy techniques.
Visual literacy as a field of research, study, and teaching becomes increasingly important with the ever-expanding proliferation of mass media in society. As more and more information and entertainment is acquired through non-print media (such as television), the ability to think critically and visually about the images presented becomes a crucial skill.

RESOURCE LINKS READINGS FEATURE PAGES ... ORGANIZATIONS
April, 2004 Welcome! This web site was constructed in the early 1990's as the first online resource for media literacy. Over the years it has developed as a useful resource for thousands throughout the world. Although this site is now changing, you can still access the resource collection of the Media Literacy Review Project using the navigation bar at the top of this page. And now, about the changes for this site. I have had a great amount of pleasure in providing this resource for those interested in media and children. But there comes a time to think about the effort involved in a one person endeavor, as this site has been. So, after 10 years I have made the decision to bring about changes that will facilitate my moving on to new projects, yet retaining a resource for others to use. The bi-annual Media Literacy Review comes to and end. Yet, the resources of the Media Literacy Online Project will remain on line and updated from time to time. The name and URL will remain the same. The primary difference will be the elimination of special feature topics which have required extensive researching. A number of new sites related to media education have come on line over the years. These have been fully funded and have had the staff to make them first class resources for educators and parents. I encourage you visit the following:

Improves literacy skills and fosters a love of animals by partnering reading assistance dogs with children. Includes training and testing for pet and handler. How it works in Chicago. May not work for all browsers.
    http://www.sitstayread.org/About.aspx
SIT STAY READ! is a volunteer reading assistance dog program for children in the Chicago area. Reading aloud is a critical component of early childhood literacy. Children who have difficulty reading have an especially hard time reading aloud in front of peers and adults. This affects their self-esteem as they struggle with a skill their classmates' easily master. SIT STAY READ! allows children to read aloud to specially trained and evaluated therapy dogs. Programs like SIT STAY READ! are showing that children are more likely to interact with an animal than another person. We’re On a Mission Our mission is to improve literacy skills and foster a love of animals by partnering reading assistance dogs with children in our community. During their interaction with the SIT STAY READ! dogs, the children forget their limitations. In addition, even children who are already skilled at reading enjoy reading aloud to the dogs. Dogs provide rapt attention and children can read aloud without fear of criticism or interruption. Children In Low-Income Families Especially at Risk A report funded by the Packard and MacArthur Foundations found that the average child growing up in a middle class family has been exposed to 1,000 to 1,700 hours of one-on-one picture book reading before entering school. The average child growing up in a low-income family has only been exposed to 25 hours of one-on-one reading aloud during this same time period.
