The Role of Libraries in Literacy Education by Schamber, Linda Illiteracy among Americans, with its social and economic implications, has become a growing concern in recent years. National awareness of problems associated with limited literacy skills has led to legislation, beginning at the federal level, to fund new literacy programs and expand existing programs. Libraries and information centers are viewed as an important component of this massive educational effort. NATIONAL AWARENESS AND SUPPORT Generally, literacy is considered to be the ability to read, write, speak, and compute at a certain level. Functional literacy involves skills needed to cope at an adult level in everyday situations, such as reading a newspaper or completing a job application form. People who lack these abilities often are members of populations suffering from poverty, crime, and unemployment. According to 1983 statistics from the U.S. Department of Education, there were 27 million functionally illiterate adults in the country, and 47 million more were having difficulty in some of the domains tested (Davidson, 1988). The current extent of the problem is thought to be much greater than these figures indicate. The need for programs to increase literacy has been acknowledged through support from the federal government, from many organizations in the education and library and information fields, and from business and industry.

Our aim is to give students, faculty, and others in the community the opportunity to explore the wide ranges of social impacts of information technology, using the diverse approaches of the Liberal Arts, social sciences, and humanities. STS students develop hands-on literacy using new media and a sophisticated understanding of their social impacts, now, in the past, and in the future.
Digital information technologies are rapidly transforming traditional ways of working, learning, and living. Just as the invention of writing transformed ancient cultures, digital communication will transform ours. STS will prepare you for the challenges and possibilities posed by these dynamic technologies. STS applies the modes of inquiry and intellectual practices of the liberal arts to help you become a creative and effective citizen of this emerging digital world.
Mission Statement

Food
The unprecedented growth in global population that occurred in the twentieth century was made possible by remarkable advances in agriculture and technology. The Green Revolution brought high-yield crops and advanced growing techniques to developing countries and improved nutrition and health for most parts of the world. Continuing population growth will require more acres of land to plant and more water for irrigation, increasing pressure on habitats and natural resources. Advanced agricultural methods have made it possible to grow more food on fewer acres of land, which permits much land to be returned to forest and other uses. However, there are costs associated with high-yield methods, including their heavy reliance on pesticides and fertilizers . Runoff of fertilizers from agricultural lands has affected the water quality of some lakes, rivers, and bays. Erosion is, and has been since crops were first planted, a serious environmental problem in the absence of preventative measures. Irrigation, required in many parts of the world, can be a significant drain on water supplies in arid areas and, if improperly managed, can lead to buildup of salt deposits, which may severely degrade

E veryone picks up bits and pieces of information while using and working around computers. This can leave some pretty big gaps in your information landscape. These lessons are an attempt to fill in the missing pieces and to tie it all together. The "Illustrated" part means there will be lots of pictures. Other sets of lecture notes I have seen online are pretty much bare text. While the writing is often great, such text-only notes do not take advantage of the possibilities of web pages. So you will see some animations and graphics that enhance the text and, hopefully, make it clearer. Topics Computer Basics
