LISTENING COMPREHENSION
This part of the test has different forms for the paper and pencil TOEFL test and the computer-based TOEFL test. On the paper and pencil TOEFL test, no picture is seen as the conversation is played. On the computer-based TOEFL test, the student sees a picture, listens to the conversation, sees the answers choices, and answers the question. Currently, we are in the process of upgrading this site to include audio capability. We are also beginning the process of including photographs to accompany each short conversation. Below, we have included a photograph with each of the first two conversations only. Typically, the photograph that appears before each conversation has little connection to the conversation itself. Therefore, the first two short conversations are meant to resemble the format of the computer-based TOEFL test, and the remainder of the questions are meant to resemble the paper and pencil TOEFL test. Foreword Listening comprehension
In this issue of Sprogforum the focus is on the pedagogical work involved in listening comprehension. A recurring theme in the articles is that listening is an interactive activity, which therefore ought to be trained by means of interactive tasks. In addition, there is a varied range of practical tasks that can be made use of in teaching. In his article Listening strategies in Danish as a second language In her article Listening exercises with a dual purpose , Pia Zinn Ohrt proposes various interesting pedagogical suggestions, based on Italian, on how it is possible to work with listening comprehension. There are examples of both analytical listening exercises whose focus is on form and on functional exercises.

Choose one group to go first, and while the other students are safely out of earshot, play the recording they have been assigned. (Be sure not to tell them ahead of time what they are doing.) Allow them to listen to it one time only. As soon as they have finished, ask them to take the short Whitman Quiz When all four groups have listened to their assigned recording and taken the quiz, tabulate the results and determine the average number of correct answers for each of the groups. A MODEL FOR LISTENING AND VIEWING COMPREHENSION IN MULTIMEDIA ENVIRONMENTS Debra Hoven

University of Queensland
, Australia ABSTRACT This paper proposes an instructional design model appropriate for humanistic multimedia Computer-Enhanced Language Learning (CELL) in a self-access environment for second language learning through listening and viewing comprehension. The model is grounded in sociocultural theory, and set against a background of research into the complexities of listening and viewing, individual learner differences and learning styles, characteristics of self-directed and autonomous learning, and user-friendly instructional software design. INTRODUCTION
  • Learners can choose either to correct themselves or to be corrected by the computer, the teacher, or peers.
  • Utterances need not be fabricated, though they must still generally be pre-recorded for computer retrieval.
  • Flexibility is limited only by the foresight of the designers of the learning packages or the providers of the learning materials. With the extension of the presence of computers in learning environments to include computer-mediated communications (CMC) such as those possible using electronic mail or the Internet, we must now devise models for computer-enhanced pedagogy to encompass these new interlocutors (Chapelle, 1994). In devising such models, it is important that we keep in mind the theories and findings from mainstream second language (L2) pedagogy and modern theories of second language acquisition (SLA).

I split this book to create a 2-level pronunciation course for lower intermediate and higher students in Japan. The courses were extremely well received time and time again. The book is an excellent guide for such classes. I rated the book at 5-stars on its own merit. However, together with the audiocassettes I would have given it four and a half stars, as I believe the audio component needs to be available on CD for cueing purposes and ease of use.
