Welcome!
Welcome to the Cincinnati GNU/Linux Users Group
Our Mission
We don't have a formal mission statement. Our goals are very simple. We have discovered GNU/Linux and want to talk to others who have made the same discovery. We are experts and novices, professionals and hobbyists, young and old. Whoever you are, we hope we have something for you. Come and check us out!
What is GNU/Linux?
GNU/Linux is an alternative operating system for your PC. GNU/Linux is a variant of Unix and provides a very powerful platform for applications and development. I suggest that you read The Linux Journal 's very good description of GNU/Linux
Meetings
CLUG meetings are normally on the fourth Saturday of the month (except when it conflicts with major holidays). For the next few months we will be trying various locations in order to decide on a new permanent meeting location. Meetings are open to the general public (but you must be a member to participate in the raffles and be eligible for the free goodies that are available).
Upcoming Meetings
Topic: Fun and Food When: Date: Jun 12, 2004

Native Oberon Operating System
Native Oberon is an operating system based on the ETH Oberon system. It is currently available for three platforms: Native Oberon is written in the original Oberon language designed by Niklaus Wirth . The system is an evolution of the operating system co-developed by Niklaus Wirth and and published in the book Project Oberon: The Design of an Operating System and Compiler , Addison-Wesley, 1992. The system is completely modular and all parts of it are dynamically loaded on-demand. Persistent object and rich text support is built into the kernel. Clickable commands embedded in "tool" texts are used as a transparent, modeless, highly customizable and low-overhead user interface, which minimizes non-visible state information. Mouse "interclicks" enable fast text editing. An efficient multitasking model is supported in a single-process by using short-running commands and cooperative background task handlers. The basic system is small - it fits on one 1.44MB installation diskette, including the compiler and TCP/IP networking. It is freely downloadable (with source code). An optional GUI component framework called Gadgets is available, with integrated WWW support (FTP, Telnet and HTTP on Ethernet, SLIP or PPP). Many useful applications are available, and the system has been used to build embedded systems. Portable applications can be developed that run on Native Oberon and the other versions of ETH Oberon hosted on other platforms, e.g., Windows, Linux (Intel x86 and PowerPC), Solaris, etc. The LNO version of Native Oberon runs on Linux, but is binary compatible with PC Native Oberon. It was created by replacing a few low-level modules of the system with Linux implementations. For more information on Native Oberon and related systems, contact

Running Windows or Linux/UNIX Software on a Macintosh
and Running Mac OS on other Platforms
On this page:
  • Running Windows on a Macintosh
Products that Run Windows on Macs
There used to be two types of solutions to run Windows software (and other operating systems) on a Mac: cheap and slow or expensive and fast. The cheap and slow solutions are software emulators , which translate been the calls made by non-Mac software and PowerPC instructions. The expensive and solution is primarily a hardware producta coprocessor card containing with an actual PC processor on board. However, there are no new coprocessor boards available any more. The advent of fast G4 processors has brought up the speed of emulators and made coproccessor boards economically unfeasible. (The MacWindows special report provides test data about running Windows 95 on these products, but does not include current versions of products. It still has some useful information.) Another way to run Windows from a Mac is with a network and Windows NT application servers, or "thin-client" products, which enable Macs to access software running on Windows servers over a network. These are listed after the coprocessor cards.

Free Software as Appropriate Technology
Imagine you are putting water pumps into a village in Africa.
You have a choice between two products: Product A vs Product B Designed by a worldwide community development process open to anyone. Sold and supported by thousands of companies, large and small. [vs] Produced and sold by a single vendor, a large multinational with a long history of unethical business practices. Control maintained by aggressive use of intellectual property law. Comes with complete schematics and a set of tools for making custom modifications. If you can't do this yourself, there are hundreds of different organisations and companies worldwide who offer customisation as a service. [vs] Is a sealed unit. Not only is access to its internal workings difficult, but international and national laws have been used to make it illegal to even look inside the casing, let alone modify the contents. Uses standard pipe fittings; designed to connect with equipment from all suppliers. [vs] Uses proprietary and poorly documented pipe fittings - often deliberately designed to prevent connection with equipment from other suppliers.

I am a senior computing specialist at the University of Washington , and I have to decide what operating system should I buy? Here are some of the candidates I am considering: Windows/98, Windows/NT 4.0 SP6, Windows/2000 Professional, RedHat Linux 6.2, SunOS on PC, and Linux on some other CPU. However, this comparison is my own work and is not official policy of the UW.
In some cases, there are applications which have specifically coded to run on one platform. For example, there is a data gathering program which will only run on Windows/95, and it talks to a data analysis program that only runs on Windows/98. Many of the users want Windows/2000, but none of them know why, and it breaks Samba. See also my comparison of operating system security between MS-Windows and Linux which I hope you will find useful.

CLI for noobies: have fun with ESR

Monday June 07, 2004 (09:01 AM GMT)
Topics: Linux
By: Joe Barr By "have fun with ESR" I don't mean to argue or agree with his politics. Or his philosophy of open source software either, for that matter. What I mean is simply to enjoy his true genius, which is not in writing parables, or philosophy, or politics: but in writing code. So open a console and extract yourself from that GUI mess for a few minutes, noobie. Let's play some of ESR's favorite games on the command line.
