Linux Operating System
Linux is a freely-available unix operating system that runs on intel processors, as well as Sun Sparcs, DEC^H^H^HCompaq^H^H^H^H^H^H Intel alpha CPUS, and others. The model used for CSL Linux is one of minimal intervention ; we have used native Red Hat tools wherever possible to maintain the OS, and (unlike other OSs) have left the entire OS resident on the local disk. This results in a larger disk footprint, leaving less disk space available for local use, but eases customizations. Although there are many duplications between Red Hat RPMs and software installed in /s, the CSL will continue to build all packages for linux in /s. Many packages are customized for use within the CS department, and greatest consistency is obtained by installing packages for all architectures from a common source tree (i.e. /s). Thus, while many packages are available on the local disk, the CSL will not customize the local-disk versions to work within the CS environment. Preferring the local-disk versions of software to software in /s (i.e. by changing $PATH ), while not prohibited, is regarded as an unsupported activity. This is consistent with the CSL approach to other supported operating systems.

Chinese government backs development of Linux operating system
By Mike Ingram 15 July 2000 Use this version to print An article in the New York Times July 7 reports that the Chinese government is developing a version of the open source computer operating system Linux, as a counterweight to the country's growing dependence on Microsoft Windows. Similar reports have emerged several times this year. In January, Jon Hall, Linux International executive director, said that it was government policy in China to use the operating system across all ministries. Speaking at the Linux World Asia conference, Hall said Wu Jichuan, China's Minister of Information Industries, had told him this during a visit to Beijing in July 1999. The issue has been revived by the Times Security concerns no doubt play a big part in the considerations of the Beijing regime. Last year a cryptographer for a Canadian software firm working in the US said he found a feature in Windows called an NSAKey. This heightened speculation over whether Microsoft software contains a back-door key that could be operated by the National Security Agency, which gathers intelligence for the US government from around the world. Though Microsoft said the key was innocuous and no evidence has been found of its use, the discovery has left many in China and elsewhere suspicious.

MICROSOFT ACQUIRES LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM FOR $18 BILLION
QWERTYUIOP, WA / DenounceNewswire / June 21, 1998 Within hours of IBM's announcement of its $5.7 billion acquisition of the Apache web server, the most popular server for World Wide Web sites, Microsoft today announced that it is acquiring Linux, the free operating system originally developed by Linus Torvalds and a motley group of worldwide programmers, for $18 billion. Mr. Torvalds, who recently joined a startup called Transmeta Corporation in Santa Clara, CA, will personally receive $8 billion in cash and Microsoft stock, instantly making him one of the richest people in Santa Clara. The rest of the money will be divvied up among the many contributors to Linux, as well as 17 commercial companies which market Linux including Caldera, Debian, DLX, Red Hat Software, Slackware, Stampede, S.u.S.E, and Yggdrasil Computing. All of the employees, officers, and directors of these companies will immediately become Microsoft employees. Transmeta, which is partly funded by the billionaire (and Microsoft co-founder) Paul Allen, will continue employing Mr. Torvalds, although, both parties agree it's kind of silly, now that he's going to be so rich.
