Interests
  • My main interests lie in the intersection of computational linguistics and cognitive science. The primary aim is to develop cognitively-motivated computational and formal models of the ways in which differing people produce fluent discourse. Such models underpin the proper design of systems presenting data and teledata to users, tailoring it to their individual needs and interests. There are three continuing sub-goals-to understand better: (i) the logical and computational properties of media; (ii) the fundamental relations assumed in theories of discourse structure; and (iii) the communicative function of multimodal discourse.
  • There are three main strands to my current research: discourse generation, individual differences, and multimodality.

Linguistics, Natural Language, and Computational Linguistics Meta-index
A guide to the best linguistic resources on the web
The Linguist List web site
EMU mirror Edinburgh mirror Stockholm mirror , or Russian mirror
The most comprehensive listing of sources of linguistic information, with a lot of their own content. Especially recommended for finding out about The Linguist List, the main world wide linguistics mailing list. (The WWW Virtual Library: Linguistics page is now no more than another way of seeing the same page of links as on the Linguist List page although it may load a bit quicker.)
Linguistics Indexes on the Internet from SIL.
THis site also hosts Ethnologue , a guide to the world's languages.
Blackwell Publishers - Linguistics Resources
A nicely laid out site, which is especially good on linguistics journals with web sites. Now being updated again. It also links to Linguistics Abstracts On-line , a search interface to linguistics journal articles, edited by Terry Langendoen, which you now have to pay for.
Tyler Chambers' The Human-Languages Page
Now in a sexy new edition, but with commercial sponsorship. Best listing of resources on individual languages. Weaker on linguistics, but expanding.

My name is Fredrik Olsson and I'm with the HUMLE laboratory at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science ( SICS ). I'm also a PhD student at the Department of Swedish at Göteborg University as well as enrolled in the Graduate School of Language Technology ( GSLT ). Here's some info on the courses I've taken Before joining SICS for my master's thesis in april 1997, I was a student at the educational programme in language engineering at Uppsala university. I became a full-time member of HUMLE in february 1998, and have since then worked with the issue of reusing language resources, as well as with designing and developing an open architecture for information refinement. I defended my licentiate of philosophy thesis entitled Requirements and Design Considerations for an Open and General Architecture for Information Refinement on March 13, 2002, in Uppsala. Linguistics

Students pursuing a degree in Linguistics
Students pursuing a degree or certificate in TESOL divide their class time between theory and practice. All UTA TESOL students acquire not only a working knowledge of how to be an effective teacher of English to speakers of other languages, but also a sense of how other languages operate. Also included in the curriculum is a required “practicum” course, a course on curriculum development, and options to take elective courses in UTA’s College of Education.
Given that language plays a vital role in the intellectual and social lives of all human beings, the study of linguistics has bearing on a wide range of fields, including (but not limited to) language learning and teaching, literary analysis and criticism, linguistic psychology, communication, linguistic anthropology, philosophy, neurology and neurolinguistics, speech recognition and synthesis, and artificial intelligence.
Graduates of the department have found employment not only in traditionally defined academic positions (i.e. university-level teaching and research), but also in fieldwork and field program administration, international development, literary consultation, language planning, language technology, and ESL teaching, both in the United States and abroad.

173. French And Russian - University Of Canterbury
The French section of the department teach and research in literary criticism, history of ideas, contemporary French studies, language acquisition and linguistics. The various aspects of Russian studies will help boost communication and analytical skills; broaden the knowledge of multicultural, as well as colonial and postcolonial issues; and teach about various political experiments, social and cultural policies.
