The life of Abraham Lincoln has been the stuff of legend in America for more than 130 years. The reasons that have made this so are many, the most important of which center on Lincoln the common man, "born in a log cabin," who would later, more than any other single individual, be responsible for saving the Union.
Born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky, Lincoln's early life was one of the most modest means. Life was hard for Thomas and Nancy Lincoln, and their children Sarah, Abraham and Thomas. The youngest son, Thomas would die in 1812, and in 1817, after losing title to their land in Kentucky, the Lincolns would head to Indiana for a fresh start. Within two years, Lincoln's mother Nancy would become ill and die. Lincoln's father would later remarry, and Abraham would soon establish a strong bond with his stepmother, Sarah. The Lincoln family continued to be on the move, and in 1830 they established their first homestead in Illinois, the state that would later claim to be the "Land of Lincoln."
It was in Illinois that Lincoln would grow into and become the man that would be president. During the brief "Black Hawk War" of 1832 involving the Sauk and Fox Native American tribes, Lincoln enlisted in a volunteer company of militia and was elected captain. The war would be brief and Lincoln's service would last only about two and a half months. The self-educated Lincoln would take on several jobs, including ferry boat pilot, store clerk, surveyor and postmaster, before coming to his life as a frontier lawyer. It was as a lawyer that Lincoln would gain and hone the skills that would bring him into politics. He served four terms in the Illinois House of Representatives, and one term in Congress, before his famous run for the U.S. Senate in 1858. Lincoln had opened his campaign on June 16, 1858 with a speech that contained some of his most remembered and quoted words:

Famous Wrestlers
George Washington
The 1st President of the United States of America George Washington was first a champion wrestler. At 18, the big, shy Washington apparently held a ''collar and elbow'' wrestling championship that was at least county-wide and possibly colony-wide. Washington never lost his touch. At the age of 47, ten years before he became the first President of the United States, the Commander of the Continental Armies still had enough left to defeat seven consecutive challengers from the Massachusetts Volunteers. The ''collar and elbow'' style devised its name from the starting position. Standing face-to-face, each wrestler placed one hand behind his opponent's neck and the other behind his elbow. While doing away with such tactics as bull-like rushes, the position opened up many possible skill maneuvers.
Andrew Jackson
The 7th President of the United States of America, Andrew Jackson was also a wrestler similar to the style and way of George Washington.
Zachary Taylor
The 12th President of the United States of America, Zachary Taylor was also a wrestler similar to the style and way of George Washington. Taylor never wrestled against Lincoln, but he was a skilled competitor in collar and elbow during his service with the Illinois Volunteers for the Black Hawk uprising. He always favored wrestling as an army sport.

    Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, guided his country through the most devastating experience in its national historythe CIVIL WAR. He is considered by many historians to have been the greatest American president.
    Early Life
Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Hardin (now Larue) County, Ky. Indians had killed his grandfather, Lincoln wrote, "when he was laboring to open a farm in the forest" in 1786; this tragedy left his father, Thomas Lincoln, "a wandering laboring boy" who "grew up, literally without education." Thomas, nevertheless, became a skilled carpenter and purchased three farms in Kentucky before the Lincolns left the state. Little is known about Lincoln's mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln. Abraham had an older sister, Sarah, and a younger brother, Thomas, who died in infancy. In 1816 the Lincolns moved to Indiana, "partly on account of slavery," Abraham recalled, "but chiefly on account of difficulty in land titles in Kentucky." Land ownership was more secure in Indiana because the Land Ordinance of 1785 provided for surveys by the federal government; moreover, the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 forbade slavery in the area. Lincoln's parents belonged to a faction of the Baptist church that disapproved of slavery, and this affiliation may account for Abraham's later statement that he was "naturally anti-slavery" and could not remember when he "did not so think, and feel." Indiana was a "wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods." The Lincolns' life near Little Pigeon Creek, in Perry (now Spencer) County, was not easy. Lincoln "was raised to farm work" and recalled life in this "unbroken forest" as a fight "with trees and logs and grubs." "There was absolutely nothing to excite ambition for education," Lincoln later recalled; he attended "some schools, so called," but for less than a year altogether. "Still, somehow," he remembered, "I could read, write, and cipher to the Rule of Three; but that was all."
