Abraham Lincoln - 16th President
March 4, 1861 to April 15, 1865
Lincoln warned the South in his Inaugural Address: "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it." Lincoln thought secession illegal, and was willing to use force to defend Federal law and the Union. When Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter and forced its surrender, he called on the states for 75,000 volunteers. Four more slave states joined the Confederacy but four remained within the Union. The Civil War had begun. The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning. Five months before receiving his party's nomination for President, he sketched his life: "I was born Feb. 12, 1809, in Hardin County, Kentucky. My parents were both born in Virginia, of undistinguished familiessecond families, perhaps I should say. My mother, who died in my tenth year, was of a family of the name of Hanks.... My father ... removed from Kentucky to ... Indiana, in my eighth year.... It was a wild region, with many bears and other wild animals still in the woods. There I grew up.... Of course when I came of age I did not know much. Still somehow, I could read, write, and cipher ... but that was all."

Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."

"I am anxious to afford some alleviation of your present distress. Perfect relief is not possible, except with time. You can not now realize that you will ever feel better. Is not this so? And yet it is a mistake. You are sure to be happy again. To know this, which is certainly true, will make you some less miserable now. I have had experience enough to know what I say; and you need only to believe it, to feel better at once. The memory of your dear Father, instead of an agony, will yet be a sad, sweet feeling in your heart, of a purer, and holier sort than you have ever known before."

Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States. He was one of the greatest leaders in the world. As President during the American Civil War, Abe preserved the Union and abolished slavery. Abe was born on February 12, 1809, in a log cabin in Kentucky. He was a postmaster, lawyer, and President of the United States. Top of Page A Nation Divided
In the mid-1800's, the United States had been a country for less than 90 years and was facing difficult times. The issue of slavery was dividing the nation. The Southern states were in favor of slavery, and the Northern states wanted to abolish or end slavery. Top of Page The Lincoln-Douglas Debates
In 1858, Abe ran for the U.S. Senate. He wanted to end slavery. His opponent for the Senate was Stephen A. Douglas. The two candidates engaged in seven debates during the election. These debates are known as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Abe lost the election, but gained a national reputation.

For guidance and inspiration, he turned to four historic documents, all concerned directly or indirectly with states' rights: Daniel Webster's 1830 reply to Robert Y. Hayne; President Andrew Jackson's Nullification Proclamation of 1832; Henry Clay's compromise speech of 1850; and the U.S. Constitution. Lincoln's initial effort was typeset and printed at the office of the Illinois State Journal, edited and then reprinted. Lincoln sent four copies of the second strike to his closest political advisors for commentary, resulting in further changes.

Did Mercury in "Little Blue Pills" Make Abraham Lincoln Erratic? Hillary Mayell
    for National Geographic News
    July 17, 2001
Tales of the melancholia that dogged U.S. President Abraham Lincoln at various times during his life have been documented by historians and biographers and in Lincoln's own correspondence.
Whether he suffered from a full-blown case of what today is called clinical depression is unknown. What is known, however, is that for a while, Lincoln took little blue pills to treat his condition.
Known as "blue mass," the little blue pills were a 19th-century staple. They were prescribed for a host of ailments, including apoplexy, worms, child-bearing, tuberculosis, toothaches, and constipation. Statue in Lincoln Memorial

"Let us discard all this quibbling about this man or the other man, this race and that race, and the other race being inferior and therefore they must be placed in an inferior position...Let us discard all these things and unite as one people throughout this land until we shall once more stand up declaring that all men are created equal." by Rick Crawford, crawford@cs.ucdavis.edu
Here is a sobering quote by Abe Lincoln: "I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 21, 1864
(letter to Col. William F. Elkins)
Ref: The Lincoln Encyclopedia , Archer H. Shaw (Macmillan, 1950, NY) Some people expressed doubts about its authenticity, given Lincoln's work as an attorney for railroad corporations! It was an interesting job tracking it down and verifying its authenticity. The first ref I heard for this quote was Jack London's 1908 Iron Heel . And although the quote indeed appears there (near p. 100), Jack London offered neither context nor source.
