US president Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln, a Republican, was the 16th president of the USA. He was assassinated in 1865, five days after the surrender of the Confederate forces in the American Civil War.
    Civil War
, his chief concern was the preservation of the Union from which the Confederate (southern) slave states had seceded on his election. Lincoln strove to reunite the nation, preserve the federal government, and end slavery. In 1863 Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation , which announced the freedom of Confederate slaves. In 1864, when the Union was close to winning the Civil War, he was re-elected. The Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth assassinated Lincoln the following year.

    The Civil War:
Lincoln, Abraham Abraham Lincoln The American people knew little about Lincoln when he became President. Little in his past experience indicated that he could successfully deal with the deep differences between Northerners and Southerners over slavery. Lincoln received less than 40 per cent of the popular vote in winning the presidential election of 1860. But by 1865, he had become in the eyes of the world equal in importance to George Washington. Through the years, many people have regarded Lincoln as the greatest person in United States history. During the Civil War, Lincoln's first task was to win the war. He had to view nearly all other matters in relation to the war. It was "the progress of our arms," he once said, "upon which all else depends." But Lincoln was a peace-loving man who had earlier described military glory as "that attractive rainbow, that rises in showers of bloodthat serpent's eye that charms to destroy." The Civil War was by far the bloodiest war in U.S. history. In the Battle of Gettysburg, for example, the more than 45,000 total casualties (people killed, wounded, captured, or missing) exceeded the number of casualties in all previous American wars put together.

By Taylor and Liane We bet most people think they know a lot about Abraham Lincoln. The truth is they don't know half of it. Did you know when Abraham was a kid he got kicked in the head by a horse and was thought to be dead for a few days? Abraham Lincoln was the first President to be born outside of the 13 colonies. He was born in a one-room log cabin on February, 12 1809 on Nolin Creek, Kentucky. Surprisingly, Lincoln didn't go to college. One of his early jobs was postmaster. He taught himself the law and became a lawyer. He married Mary Todd and they had 4 children. Their names were Robert, Edward, William and Thomas (Tad). Out of all their children only Robert lived to be an adult. On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th U.S. President. He is nicknamed Honest Abe because he once said, "I can not tell a lie." He became the first Republican to received 180 of 303 possible electoral votes. He received only 40% of the popular votes. He ran against Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln's Vice President was Hannibal Hamlin but the party chose Andrew Johnson for his second term. His party's main issue was to free the slaves. On January 23, 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation that said all slaves were free. He also gave the famous Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863 at the dedication of a battlefield cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. It was such a remarkable speech because it reminded people why the war was being fought. He was the first President to grow a beard while in office. A kid had sent a letter to Abe telling him he should grow a beard so he did!

Lincoln was born in Kentucky. He had no chuch affiliation. Lincoln was the tallest president 6 ft. 4 in., weighing about 180 pounds. He patented his floating drydock on May 22, 1849, patent #6469. He was the first U.S. President to receive a patent. The Lincoln-Douglas debates centered upon a Senate seat from Illinois. Lincoln won national prominence, but Douglas got the job. He grew a beard because a little girl wrote him a letter telling him that he would look more handsome with a beard. Mud Slinging- In the campaign of 1860 his opponents said Abe was homely and an ignoramus. Called two-faced by a rival, Lincoln responded, "If I had another face, do you think I'd wear this one?" He liked wrestling. Abraham Lincoln lead the US in the US Civil War, from 1861-1865
The second child, at the age of 12, became the only child of a president to die in the White House. Lincoln was shot at twice before John Wilkes Booth killed him. Both times were while he was on his way to the Soldier's Home and Lincoln joked about them and ordered that they not be publicized. This page was last modified on Sunday, May 9, 2004

C O L N Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in a one room log cabin, located on a farm near Hodgenville, Kentucky (a state that permitted slavery at the time). When he was only 9 years old, his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, died. And a year later, his father, Thomas Lincoln, remarried a woman named Sarah Bush, who had a tremendous influence on the young Abraham Lincoln. To support his family, Abraham had to work at a neighboring farm, denying him the opportunity to go to school. So the total amount of formal education he received was less than a year. Although his formal education ended very quickly, his self-education was just beginning. An avid reader, he read everything he could get his hands on, studying a variety of subjects, such as mathematics, literature and law. Eventually, this self-educated man became a lawyer. Lincoln had a very strong desire to make a difference, so he entered politics. In August, 1832, he finished eighth out of thirteen in a race for the Illinois House of Representatives. Abraham believed the government should be a positive force, whose goal should be to serve the people. He reasoned, in order for him to have significant influence and impact on the government, he must achieve a high position in government - preferably the position of the president of the United States. This goal eventually became his burning desire.
