Abraham Lincoln Lincoln warned the South in his Inaugural Address: "In your hands, my dissatisfied fellow countrymen, and not in mine, is the momentous issue of civil war. The government will not assail you.... You have no oath registered in Heaven to destroy the government, while I shall have the most solemn one to preserve, protect and defend it." Lincoln thought secession illegal, and was willing to use force to defend Federal law and the Union. When Confederate batteries fired on Fort Sumter and forced its surrender, he called on the states for 75,000 volunteers. Four more slave states joined the Confederacy but four remained within the Union. The Civil War had begun. The son of a Kentucky frontiersman, Lincoln had to struggle for a living and for learning. Five months before receiving his party's nomination for President, he sketched his life:

He begins his story by introducing a modern-day little boy who has a next door neighbor that looks just like Lincoln. This man not only looks like Lincoln, but he has many of the same likes and habits that our famous president had. Waber has made a connection for our young readers from the familiar to the more abstract. Threaded throughout his book are well-known facts about President Lincoln: his outdoor pioneer heritage, his love of books, and his occupation before he became president are just a few of these facts included in this book. On Jan. 1, 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which eventually led to the freeing of all slaves in the USA. During the Civil War, Lincoln gave many speeches, including the Gettysburg Address (Nov. 1863), a short speech in which he stated how a country must be dedicated to human freedom in order to survive. The Civil War ended with a victory for the Union on April 9, 1865, when General Robert E. Lee (from the Confederacy) surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant (from the Union).

AN OVERVIEW OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN'S LIFE Abraham Lincoln was born Sunday, February 12, 1809, in a log cabin near Hodgenville, Kentucky . He was the son of Thomas and Nancy Hanks Lincoln , and he was named for his paternal grandfather. Thomas Lincoln was a carpenter and farmer. Both of Abraham's parents were members of a Baptist congregation which had separated from another church due to opposition to slavery. When Abraham was 7, the family moved to southern Indiana . Abraham had gone to school briefly in Kentucky and did so again in Indiana. He attended school with his older sister, Sarah (his younger brother, Thomas, had died in infancy). In 1818 Nancy Hanks Lincoln died from milk sickness , a disease obtained from drinking the milk of cows which had grazed on poisonous white snakeroot. Thomas Lincoln remarried the next year, and Abraham loved his new stepmother, Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln . She brought 3 children of her own into the household. As Abraham grew up, he loved to read and preferred learning to working in the fields. This led to a difficult relationship with his father who was just the opposite. Abraham was constantly borrowing books from the neighbors. In 1828 Abraham's sister, who had married Aaron Grigsby in 1826, died during childbirth. Later in the year, Abraham made a flatboat trip to New Orleans. In 1830 the Lincolns moved west to

    Lincoln's Patent
On May 22, 1849, Abraham Lincoln received Patent No. 6469 for a device to lift boats over shoals, an invention which was never manufactured. However, it did make him the only U.S. president to hold a patent. Shown here is his scale model at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Lincoln's Love of Inventions Lincoln displayed a lifelong fascination with mechanical things. William H. Herndon, his law partner, attributed this to his father, saying, "he evinced a decided bent toward machinery or mechanical appliances, a trait he doubtless inherited from his father who was himself something of a mechanic and therefore skilled in the use of tools." Henry Whitney, another lawyer friend of Lincoln's, recalled that "While we were traveling in ante-railway days, on the circuit, and would stop at a farm-house for dinner, Lincoln would improve the leisure in hunting up some farming implement, machine or tool, and he would carefully examine it all over, first generally and then critically;" Lincoln also delivered lectures on discoveries and inventions before he became president. "Man is not the only animal who labors; but he is the only one who

Local legend about the us president, abraham lincoln, faking his death in 1865 in order to live a simple life away from politics and his wife.
    http://www.geocities.com/waylon_halen/
President Lincoln's Adventures in Weatherford, TX Weatherford, Texas is a small community located a few miles west of Fort Worth. It's a place known for its long history of rich folklore and mythology. Among the stranger tales to come out of this area is a legend about the United States President Abraham Lincoln. The local belief is that President Lincoln faked his death in 1865 in order to start a simple life away from politics and his wife. At once this sounds outrageously stupid, but before passing judgment let's review the whole story. What most of us have been taught is that President Lincoln was assassinated by an actor named John Wilkes Booth shortly after the Civil War had ended. The official record says that Abraham Lincoln died on the morning of April 15, 1865. A hearse carried his body back to the White House around 9:00 A.M. The cavalry provided an escort to the procession which moved up 10th Street to G Street and then slowly to the White House. The temporary coffin of Abraham Lincoln was covered by an American flag. The body of the President were placed in the Guest Room which was on the second floor.
There were nine men present for the autopsy. Among these were the Surgeon General Dr. Joseph K. Barnes, Lincoln family physician, Dr. Robert King Stone, Dr. Charles Sabin Taft, Assistant Surgeon General Dr. Charles H. Crane, Army Assistant Surgeon William Morrow Notson, General Rucker of the Army's Quartermaster Department, Lincoln's friend, Orville H. Browning, Army Assistant Surgeon (pathologist) J. Janvier Woodward, and Army Assistant Surgeon (pathologist) Edward Curtis. Lincoln's widow, Mary Todd Lincoln sent a messenger to request a lock of hair from the President's head (as if she needed proof that it was in fact her husband). The autopsy itself was done by Dr. Curtis and Dr. Woodward.

This made Polk the first president to run the country extending from the Atlantic Ocean all the way to the Pacific Ocean. It was during President Polk’s term in 1845 that the abolitionist and escaped slave Frederick Douglass wrote his autobiography, endangering his own freedom by doing so. President Polk believed that the United States had a "manifest destiny" to expand. His attempts to gain more of Texas, New Mexico, and California led to the Mexican War. The invention of the revolver by Samuel Colt helped the U.S. to win this war and gain five hundred thousand square miles of land. Polk had promised to serve only one term in office.
