The Search along the Gulf Coast
Along the Gulf of Florida

Leaving Tallahassee, Florida from the State Capitol on Monroe Avenue, I headed South in search of lighthouses along the Gulf Coast. I found a source of information at the Ranger Station in St. Mark's National Preserve for my travels. As I drove along the roadway toward my first lighthouse, I saw something very large on the left side of the road. After I passed the object I realized it was a huge alligator that was retrieving something lying in the road. I stopped and backed my van up, but by then the large creature had slipped back into the swamp. A few miles further down the road the second oldest lighthouse built in 1842 stood operating on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. Thus, the beginning of my journey in search of lighthouses along US 98 began as I headed back to Houston, Texas.
St. Marks Lighthouse
Location: On the Eastside of the entrance to St. Marks River, Appalachia Bay, Florida
Visited May 12, 2000
As an aid to navigation, St Marks Lighthouse was first built in 1829, but the existing tower was actually completed in 1842. This lighthouse has survived the Civil War and the strongest of hurricanes and continues to serve as one of America's best. It is not difficult to locate following resource maps. The surrounding grounds are accessible from a parking area on the West side. A low viewing platform with a few steps is located on the North side of the lighthouse. I met other visitors who were willing to take pictures from the observation deck for me.

The men and women of the Lighthouse Service were among the most dedicated civil servants, often performing in extreme hardship. Abbie Burgess, while also caring for her family, served 38 years at the Matinicus Rock and White Head Light Stations in Maine. Keepers also saved lives. Ida Lewis rescued 18 people during her 39 years at the Lime Rock Lighthouse and Marcus Hanna, the keeper of the Cape Elizabeth Light, is the only man to have won the Medal of Honor and the Gold Lifesaving Medal. Other keepers died on duty. A 1906 hurricane, for instance, destroyed twenty-three lights along the Gulf Coast and killed the keepers at Horn Island and Sand Island. In 1946 a tsunami destroyed the Scotch Cap (Alaska) light and killed the entire crew.

http://www.uslhs.org/inner/home.html
The United States Lighthouse Society is a non-profit historical and educational organization incorporated to educate, inform, and entertain those who are interested in America's lighthouses, past and present. Modern technology has doomed the classic lighthouse. The Coast Guard, in its role as custodian, has automated all light stations in this country and, in the process, has eliminated the need for operating personnel. Sterile, rotating aero-beacons on monopoles have replaced many proud coastal ladies of former years with their sweeping towers of brick and Victorian gingerbread. In selected cases, the Coast Guard is licensing some formerly manned and discontinued light station to qualified groups. Many of the light stations considered no longer functional have been transferred to various states, counties or nonprofit groups and are now serving as museums, bed-and-breakfast inns or youth hostels. Although the almost 300-year-old era of manned light stations in this country has come to a close, those remaining symbols of our maritime heritage can, and should be, preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. With this in mind, the United States Lighthouse Society was founded to assist in the restoration and preservation of America's lighthouses and to help qualified local groups in their efforts to return the nation's lighthouses to the public domain.

Residents of Gasparilla Island, off the Gulf Coast of Florida, can't agree if their island was named after legendary pirate Jose Gaspar or Father Gaspar, a 16th cnetury missionary priest. They did agree that the lighthouse on the southern tip of their island, built in 1888, was worth saving, so in 1980 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

SANIBEL ISLAND LIGHT, FL #20109
Before Sanibel Island was linked to the mainland by a causeway, Caloosa Indians paddled down the Caloosahatchee River to reach this barrier island. Because of the currents, Sanibel's beaches capture the Gulf's shells in abundance. Until its four column iron pile structure was built on Ybel Point in 1884, it also captured an occasional misguided vessel.

AMELIA ISLAND, FL #20110
The St. Mary's River forms a natrual border between Georgia and Florida. In 1820, a brick lighthouse was built on Cumberland Island, Georgia, to mark the river's entrance. Florida was annexed as a territory the following year, and in 1839 the Lighthouse Service dismantled and moved the lighthouse to Amelia Island.

From the Louisiana border to the Mouth of the Rio Grande, these historic beacons have led the way to life on the Texas coast...
Stoic, dependable, historic - the lighthouses of the Texas Gulf coast, like their counterparts in other parts of the world, are more than just reminders of man's great struggle with the sea. They are pillars of hopes past; guideposts for mariners lost in troubled waters; the last and the first site each sailor would see before yielding to the wrath or mercy of prevailing winds and the temporal whims of Mother Nature and Father Sea.
With varied shapes and sizes, their brilliant lamps kept watch upon the seas, the one great hope of mariners who were long upon the open water, guiding man and ship safely through channels and waterways to the safety of shore. Below you will find three selected Texas lighthouses to discover and explore. Happy voyaging!
Half Moon Reef Lighthouse, Port Lavaca, Texas
With great coastal charm, Half Moon Reef Lighthouse now sits in downtown Port Lavaca, Texas, next to the local Civic Center.
Originally built in 1858, the lighthouse was constructed on the shoals known as Halfmoon Reef, which separates Matagorda and Palacios Bays, and later disassembled and moved to its current location.

A Report on the International Lighthouse Conference September 17-21, 2002 Kids on the Beam: Preservation Through Education A Report from the President of ALF (Click here to read the conference keynote address by Admiral Vivien Crea) The conference was a smashing success, much better than any of us could possibly have imagined. This was the longest week many of us have done in a while. The days started at 7 a.m. and most nights many of us were still there at midnight. All over the city there were banners on every lamp post promoting the International Lighthouse Conference, which was quite a sight to see in itself. The Teachers' Workshop was fantastic and I could not believe all the ideas they came up with. Lighthouse groups from most parts of the country were represented: California, Washington, Great Lakes, Gulf Coast, Florida, Chesapeake, Long Island and New England.

Gulf Coast Lighthouses > Customer Review #1: Very excellent lighthouse book

First, this book is chocked full of Bruce Roberts beautiful photographs of the lighthouses in this region. The photographs are nothing less than SPECTACULAR! Combined with the revised and updated information on each makes this regional lighthouse guide a requirement you wont want to be without whether youre visiting the region or a life-long resident. The text contains full, rich descriptions of each lighthouse, too. I have many lighthouse books and all of Bruce Roberts and Ray Jones regional guides. Ive read them all and used most of them while traveling. Ive found them to be first rate, an excellent choice for people who want everything lighthouse between two covers. A joy to look at and informative to read.
Gulf Coast Lighthouses > Customer Review #2: These books are good for finding the lights that are in them There are directions and other info for finding and visiting lighthouses. They do not always show all lights for a given area. The photos are all color. I own 3 of these books. There are not many other guide books out there so if you are looking for guide books these are good to have. Since there are so many books in this series I thought Id help people find them easier. This is the series.
