1. Gulf Coast Lighthouses
Present and past lighthouses located on us gulf of Mexico in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, Pictures and history photos and histories about lighthouses that no longer exist
http://www.coastlights.com/
This site is to allow a look at the lighthouses of the United States coast of the Gulf of Mexico. I have included some information about the lighthouses and also directions for getting to where you can see the lights. The information has been taken from various sources, but many of the facts are from the Inventory of Historic Light Stations by the National Park Service and Lighthouses, Lightships, and the Gulf of Mexico by David L. Cipra. While they are not many in number, when compared to many areas of the country, they are part of the proud heritage of America's lighthouse service. I will be adding additional lighthouses to the site as time and travel permit me to do so. NEW - I have now started including pages that have photos and histories about lighthouses that no longer exist, such as Brazos River and Redfish Bar Cut lighthouses. While I have found photos of some of these lighthouses, if anyone has photos of any of the Gulf Coast Lighthouses that no longer exist, and would be willing to let me use them on this site, please contact me.

Pass Christian LightHouse Biloxi LightHouse- Aerial Round Island LightHouse ... Waveland Light House
The first mainland Mississippi lighthouse was constructed at Pass Christian in 1831– simultaneous with a similar light tower placed at Cat Island. These beacons were necessary to aid schooner traffic between New Orleans and Mobile – to make tourist stops at the antebellum hotels of Bay St. Louis, Pass Christian, Biloxi, Ocean Springs and Pascagoula. The Biloxi Lighthouse, constructed of cast iron in 1848, continues to stand tall on U.S. Hwy. 90 at the beach front.

Mexico East Coast Lighthouses
Although this region is close to the U.S., it is mostly terra incognita for American lighthouse fans. That's too bad, because some of Mexico's most impressive and historic lighthouses are located on this coast. While the U.S. Coast Guard is rapidly pulling out of the lighthouse business, in Mexico lighthouses still play an importnat role in coastal navigation and new towers are still being built from time to time. Sadly, many of the lighthouses on this page are known only from listings of navigational aids . More information is needed for all of them, and photos are needed for most of them. If you can add to our online knowledge, please let me know Mexican lighthouses are managed by the , the cabinet agency that also manages the country's airports and seaports. Many of the larger light stations are staffed by resident civilian keepers.

Printing this file several pages at a time will result in a finished product of higher quality and in a format that more closely resembles that on the screen. LIGHTHOUSE RESOURCE FOR GRADES K -4 THE SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES RELATE TO VARIOUS DISCIPLINES - ART, SCIENCE, LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH, HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY. GOALS 1. To familiarize children with lighthouses as aids to navigation. 2. To have students gain a basic understanding of lighthouse operation and the evolution of lighthouse technology. 3. To make children aware of the historic role of lighthouses and their current status. 4. To teach children the properties of light and how these are employed to enhance the effectiveness of the light signal. The Story of the Lighthouse Many, many years ago (thousands of years to be more exact), people lived m a very primitive wayboth hunting for and growing their own food (there were no supermarkets in those days, no stores at all!). Eventually they decided to explore the water in a boat to find out what the sea had to offer in the way of food. And, what did they find? They found fish and all kinds of other seafood: clams, mussels, scallops, oysters, lobsters, crabs, etc. During the day they could find their way back to the landing place by looking for a pile of rocks that had been left there.

Soon after the Louisiana Purchase, lighthouses were planned and their construction begun along the Gulf Coast to support a burgeoning seaborne commerce. Shifting bars and bayous, soft and muddy bottoms, coral reefs, and periodic hurricanes challenged the skills of the lighthouse designers and builders, as well as the men and women appointed to keep the lights. Over time, because of the numerous natural hazards, often two, sometimes three or even four replacement towers were built at the same station. Lighthouses on the Gulf Coast were challenged, not only by forces of nature, but also by historical events, especially the Civil War. Extinguished as aids to navigation, lighthouses became Confederate lookout posts and Union targets during this period, some were even bombarded. After the war, materials such as cast iron and new technology such as skeletal towers permitted the construction of towers more suited to the Gulf shore's terrain. According to U.S. Coast Guard Chief Historian Robert M. Browning

Nineteenth-Century Lights:
Historic Images of American Lighthouses
The authors of Women Who Kept the Lights: An Illustrated History of Female Lighthouse Keepers J. Candace and Mary Louise Clifford, have drawn together a unique collection of 230 photos and drawings created during the 1800s. The 304-page book includes narratives about the featured lighthouses as well as the evolution of lighthouses during the nineteenth century. In 1800 the United States had 26 lighthouses. At the end of the century that number had increased to over 650. As the country expanded, the building of new lighthouses followed the nation's shipping interestsdown the Atlantic coast, up the Hudson River and along Lake Champlain, into the Chesapeake Bay, along the Gulf Coast, around the Great Lakes, and finally up the entire length of the Pacific coast. As the number of lighthouses grew, the architectural styles of the stations and the technology that lit them changed. Rubblestone and wood were supplemented by cut stone and brick. Tall, heavy towers sunk in the soft sands of the Chesapeake and Gulf Coast gave way to lightweight offshore screwpiles supporting simple wooden dwellings with a lantern on the roof. By mid-century, sailing ships were being replaced by steamships; chandeliers of whale and lard oil lamps in front of reflectors were replaced by Fresnel lenses that magnified the light. Cast iron was introduced as a light and movable building material. Fog bells previously rung by hand were mechanized by clockworks and many later replaced with steam-operated fog signals. In the 1880s oil lamps gave way to kerosene; oil houses were added to light stations to protect the volatile fuel. Finally, the introduction of electricity greatly simplified the keeper's duties.
