The Sky I hate - and the Sky I love..
Unfortunately, an undisturbed sky is no longer an experience possible for everybody. Amateur Astronomers and Wildlife Associations worldwide regard the increasing light pollution with increasing concern. Electric energy is wasted irrespective of world wide concern on CO2 pollution. Bad street illumination is clearly visible even from space satellites (click for a nightphoto of Europe) , and a new age of sky commercials has started. During the second world war, long range searchlights were applied to detect air-crafts attacking during night time. Today, modern versions of these searchlights are successfully applied by an increasing number of companies for advertising. Companies advertise with long range lasers, able to dominate the sky within a radius of 50 km. In the city of Sonderborg, Denmark, a local high tech company applied a computer controlled long range searchlight beam in short periods, without any public warning. As a result, the local newspaper gave strange eye witness reports: People claimed to have seen a real UFO!

Yerkes Observatory and Light Pollution
The night-time sky at Yerkes has become increasingly brighter over the last 15 years, due to light pollution. Measurements made in the spring of 1998 showed the sky brightness measured at a 70 degree elevation to be about twice what they were 10 years before. I had noticed that, between 1995 and 1998, the darkness had deteriorated to the extent that I no longer needed a torch (flashlight) to walk home after sunset. In August of 1998 I took a series of horizon pictures from the catwalk of the 40-inch refractor. These pictures were taken just after midnight on a moonless night, with an f/3.5 aperture and 2-minute exposures on ISO 200 film. The pictures below show (going from left to right) the views looking (i) South-West, (ii) South-East, (iii) East and (iv) North-West. Click on a thumbnail for a larger version. As can be seen, the sky is pretty bright. The most suprising thing was to find that the darkest part of the horizon is looking towards the South-East, which is the direction of Chicago! Clearly our light pollution problem is dominated by light from the local communities. In February of 1999 I approached the Williams Bay village board to see if I could give them a presentation on this problem. Williams Bay had a section in its building code on lighting, but it was very limited in its scope and was largely being ignored. In March I gave a presentation to the Village Board which received a favourable response. Over the spring and summer of 1999 I drafted a lighting ordinanace with their input, and this was adopted by Williams Bay in September of 1999.

Light pollution threatens national parks
Light pollution, which is most often caused by excessive or misdirected outdoor lighting, hinders the ability to observe celestial features
March 29, 1999
Web posted at: 4:15 PM EST
The splendor of camping out and star gazing is a threatened pastime, according a survey of light pollution impacts on the U.S. National Park System conducted by the National Parks and Conservation Association. "Protecting dark night skies in our National Parks is as vital as protecting clean air, water, wildlife and the sounds of nature," said Thomas Kiernan, president of the conservation organization. "Star gazing is a connection to humanity's earliest curiosity about our place in the universe. It is practically impossible to see the stars from most cities, but now, clear night vistas in our national parks are an important resource that is literally fading from sight." According to the survey:
  • Nearly two-thirds 64 percent of parks responding to the survey that permit overnight visitation consider light pollution a resource problem.

Villains and Heroes of Lights and Lighting Fixtures If we are to reduce the effects of light pollution, we must learn about the types, both good and bad, of fixtures used in outdoor lighting. Some of these are heroes: They save energy, direct light to where it is needed, and add to the ambiance of our nighttime environment. Others are villains that waste energy, spill light in all directions, produce glare, and ruin the beauty of the night. the Villains Globes and similar fixtures. These usually consist of a transparent or translucent "ball" or cylinder with a lamp bulb inside, sitting atop a pole. They look attractive in the daytime when they are not turned on. In fact, this type of fixture is often chosen for this very reason. These lights are villains because when turned on at night, they radiate not only in the direction where illumination is needed, but in all directions - more than half the light is directed upward to add to the sky glow and sideways to cause glare. Much of the rest is not doing any useful work in helping us see the things we need.

The Fading Milky Way
Light pollution is a growing environmental problem that threatens to erase the night sky before its time.
Listen to this story via streaming audio , a downloadable file , or get help November 1, 2001: Cosmologists speculate that 10 years from now (a mind-boggling stretch) the stars in our relentlessly expanding Universe could run out of fuel and fade from view. The night sky, once the TV set of ancient peoples, will become dull and boring: a blank tableau with no stars or nebulae. Sounds like an astronomer's nightmare! Fortunately, the stars themselves won't go out for a very long time. But researchers say the night sky is already fading. A recent study revealed that perhaps two-thirds of the world's population can no longer look upwards at night and see the Milky Way a hazy swath of stars that on warm summer nights spans the sky from horizon to horizon. Above : The Milky Way shines through aurora borealis during a recent geomagnetic storm . Both are rare sights from brightly-lit urban areas. Photo credit: Duane Clausen, Menominee, Michigan, USA.

Cosmic Light Pollution
A series of unmanned balloon flights will measure the subtle ultraviolet glow of the night sky and help unravel one of the most perplexing mysteries of astrophysics.
July 10, 2000 A midnight balloon ride high above the farms and fields of the American West to view the gentle glow of the Earth at night may sound rather romantic. The ride from Palestine, Texas on July 6, 2000, however, was pure science, the first of a series of unmanned NASA scientific balloon flights that will measure the ultraviolet (UV) light illuminating the night sky and that may ultimately help solve the mystery of high-energy cosmic rays, which seem to travel through space further than physicists deem possible.
The balloon carried an experiment called NIGHTGLOW , a collaboration between NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (Greenbelt, MD.) and the University of Utah, Salt Lake City. NIGHTGLOW is designed to detect background radiation produced by a variety of sources, including moonlight and starlight, the interaction of oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the atmosphere, human-made lighting, and even the bioluminescence of squid and other animals.

Fight light pollution The only way to stop and reverse the impact of light pollution is government legislation.
in order for this to happen it is vital that every person in the uk with an interest in the night sky, and energy conservation, should follow the steps listed below and send a standard E mail message to your MP, it will only take about 2 minutes of your time and will make a big difference.
1 Copy the standard letter.
2. Find out who your MP is at www.locata.co.uk/commons/.
3 Click on your MPs E mail address, fill in the form field and paste the standard letter into the main body, or write your own message.
4. Send the message.

38. Light Pollution- The Problem
If the night is cloudy, the light pollution effects are striking. The companies. So Next How Much Does light pollution Costs?
http://www.pha.jhu.edu/~atolea/second/page1.html
Looking from the above One needs to be an astronaut to enjoy a view like one on the left, Florida from the Space Shuttle.
However, most of us have contemplated similar views during airplane takeoffs or landings. The view is fantastic, thousands of city lights shining like starts on the ground, outlining the roads and neighborhoods. But one has to go a little bit further than that and think. Should you see those lights at all? Is there any use of the light that you see, light that obviously goes up, other than illuminating bird and airplane bellies?
Light stands for Lighting
We all know why we have light outside. Outdoor lighting is used to illuminate roadways, parking lots, yards, sidewalks, public meeting areas, signs, work sites, and buildings. It provides us with better visibility and a sense of security.
People sleep better when their property is properly lighted, when their car outside is clearly visible through the window. However, light alone does not provide security, but a sense of security. Unless your up all night, nothing guards you better than a dog, a fence/door/window security system or police patrols in your neighborhood.
When well designed and properly installed, outdoor lighting can be and is very useful in improving visibility and safety and a sense of security, while at the same time minimizing energy use and operating costs.
