Holograms that react to biological substances offer new diagnostic tools.
ILLUSTRATION BY JOHN S. DYKES By Christopher Lowe, Jeff Blyth, Alex Marshall, Anthony James, Satyamoorthy Kabilan, Felicity Sartain, Mei-Ching Lee, Blanca Madrigal-Gonzalez, Xiao-Ping Yang, and Colin Davidson, University of Cambridge Biosensor technology has led to a solution addressing the need for biomedical diagnostics that allow reliable measurements to be made at the bedside, physician's office, home, roadside, or workplace. By measuring levels of blood gases, electrolytes, and metabolites, doctors can monitor aberrant physiologies associated with pulmonary emphysema, respiratory disorders, heart failure, substance abuse, diarrhea, dehydration, diabetes, and kidney failure.

    Brief Biography
During PhD studies worked for six months at the University of Liege in Belgium.
Joined DIT as a postdoctoral researcher in 1996 and took up current position as manager of the Centre for Industrial and Engineering Optics in March 1998.
    Research Interests
Research interests are primarily in interferometric techniques for surface metrology (ESPI, white light interferometry, holographic intereferometry) and holographic recording materials (recording processes, diffusion through polymer, holographic characterisation). Doctoral research work involved the optimisation and characterisation of a new polymeric holographic recording material for use in holographic interferometry and the manufacture of holographic optical elements.
Reviewed international Journal papers: Guntaka, S. Making the switch
Companies around the globe are competing to develop the de facto optical switches to be used in future all-optical communications networks. Nadya Anscombe reports on one of the lesser-known developments in switching technology - electrically switchable holograms. From September 2001
    Bragg grating
Time and again, the latest developments in optical switching technology have been hailed as the key to the all-optical network of the future. Microelectromechanical systems, for example, are currently receiving a lot of attention, with a plethora of start-up companies racing to be the first to market. However, two start-ups - Israeli company Trellis Photonics and US firm Digilens - have opted to try something completely different. They are working on electrically switchable holographic technology, which uses holograms activated by a voltage to reflect light beams. As with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), electrically switchable holograms eliminate the need for converting photonic signals into electronic ones. Unlike MEMS, however, electrically switchable holograms contain no moving parts. They are also wavelength selective, have fewer alignment problems and are potentially much faster.
