1.1 Scope of Plan: 1.2 Accountability: Members of the LSDiv. Safety Committee serve as primary points-of-contact during inspections and Self Assessment activities and inspections; during such assessments, contact may also be made with the PI, the Department Head, or the Division Directorate, on an as-needed and graded basis. The Safety Coordinator is responsible for maintaining the LSDiv. Safety Plan on behalf of the Division director, and assuring that the Division's ongoing program of Self Assessment is conducted in all Division spaces. Regular meetings of the Safety Committee serve to promote and explain the plan, the Division safety program and its' associated activities, as well as to afford members of the committee to participate in this process. 2.1 Scope of Work Authorized: LSDiv. conducts research not limited to but primarily including cancer biology, molecular and nuclear medicine, radiation biology and DNA repair, subcellular structures, and genomics. An Integrated Hazards Appraisal conducted during August and September of 1996 cataloged the work activities and inventoried hazards within LSD. This is a resource serves as a baseline and to help established the authorized scope of work.

Background The mission of the Life Sciences Division (LSD) is to integrate experimental and theoretical connections between genes, their function, and their organization within cells and tissues to better understand and mitigate the harmful health effects and environmental consequences associated with energy production, energy use, and waste cleanup. The Division acknowledges that without the contributions of a diverse workforce, we will not succeed in our collective mission. We have established a Diversity Committee, chaired by Mark Biggin, Ph.D., Genome Sciences Department Deputy Head, to develop and implement the diversity plan below. The Division Director and the Life Sciences Directors Action Committee (LSDAC) members are responsible for integrating these efforts into their departmental activities and for communicating the importance and value of these efforts. The membership of the Diversity Committee actively solicits involvement from representatives of all aspects of Division activities, such as scientific, administrative, and support personnel.

    Topic: Bio and Medicine
Being inactive is more life-threatening than being overweight or obese, results of one of the first studies to consider body weight and physical activity simultaneously and assess their independent effects on mortality has found. For the determinedly sedentary, that's the bad news. The good news is that participants didn't need to be marathon runners to decrease their mortality risk.

Small amounts of physical activity found to be significantly protective
BUFFALO, N.Y.
Results showed that for men in the study, small amounts of physical activity were significantly protective, while moderate or intense physical activity provided little additional life-preserving benefit, irrespective of weight. Moreover, in an interesting twist to the "leaner is better" axiom, underweight persons in this study were at greater risk of dying from any cause than people of healthy weight. The study appears in the current issue of Annals of Epidemiology.
