Stow it Don't Throw it
Garbage pollution from vessels Boat users have traditionally dumped their garbage into the sea as a matter of course. Oceans were seen as vast domains in which garbage became invisible because it either decayed or sank. Today the situation is very different, mainly because we all use so many non-biodegradable products such as plastics. Once thrown into the sea, they are extremely persistent and potentially harmful to humans and marine life. The beauty of our coastlines and beaches is devalued as garbage accumulates. Beaches, often in remote places, are polluted by garbage washed up from the sea. Much of this garbage comes from ships, yachts, trawlers and other marine craft. Garbage can be fatal for marine animals such as turtles and whales which mistake plastic bags for jellyfish - a source of food. Other plastic material can be mistaken as food and eaten by fish, seabirds and other marine life, causing death. Garbage also entangles seabirds, seals, turtles and fish, trapping and slowly choking them to death. Garbage can also be costly for recreational boaters and the fishing industry. Rope and plastic material may get caught in propeller shafts or block water intakes causing major damage, expensive repairs and loss of income while vessels are repaired.

Ê Our coastal zone includes our catchment areas, the rivers that run into the oceans and the oceans themselves. In the coastal zone you will find the beaches that we use, the rocky shores and the estuaries. It's important to remember that all these areas are connected, along with the plants and animals we depend on it to be clean and healthy for our survival. To find out more about these different areas click on the map or choose an area from the list .
Intertidal Collections
http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/algae/InterTid.htm The intertidal zone, lying between the extreme high and low water marks, is at the interface between land and the ocean. This zone yields some of the most interesting algal collections, especially on temperate coasts or in areas with high tidal amplitude where species distribution limits determined by biological and physical factors are evident. The varied intertidal micro-habitats (rock, sand, tidepools, attached organisms) and differing degrees of exposure to the elements (wave surge, sand scouring, freezing, desiccation, etc.) account for the high species diversity found here. In the earlier days of phycology, most specimens were collected from this zone, and even today the intertidal zone is an important collecting habitat.

What is the Census of Marine Life? The Census of Marine Life is a worldwide program doing research on what is in the oceans now, what used to be in the oceans and what will be in the oceans in the future. The Census is able to do this through many seperate projects, each using new technology in different parts of the world. Click on the links below to find out more about each project, or visit the Census of Marine Life website www.coml.org Tagging of Pacific Pelagics (TOPP) - Satellite tagging of large ocean-going animals like sharks, turtles and squid in the Pacific Ocean Chemosynthetic Ecosystems in the Arctic and Northern Atlantic Oceans (ChEss) - Explorations into deep-sea hot-water vents from the Arctic down to the equator Patterns and Processes of Ecosystems in the Northern Mid-Atlantic (MAR-ECO) - Checking out some cool new animals (and what they eat) in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

AMERICAN OCEANS CAMPAIGN Complete list of AOC Testimony

Testimony of Ted Danson, Founding President of American Oceans Campaign
before the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy
Los Angeles, California
April 19, 2002
Good morning and welcome to Southern California. As you have heard yesterday and will hear today, Californians have a deep affinity for our magnificent coastline and oceans an affinity shared by concerned Americans across the nation. I wish to thank the Commissioners and staff of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy for inviting me to share some thoughts for a more coordinated, comprehensive national ocean agenda for the 21st Century. Fifteen years ago, I founded American Oceans Campaign in order to build a stronger voice for protecting oceans and ensuring a healthier planet for our families and ourselves. One of the events that led me to become an ocean advocate was a trip to a local, polluted beach with my two young daughters. Having to explain to my disappointed children that we could not swim in the ocean because we could get sick was an eye-opening experience. Shortly thereafter, I became convinced that dedicating personal time in a campaign to ensure future generations would enjoy healthy oceans, teeming with life, was necessary and important to my family and me. Throughout AOC's history, we have focused much of our attention on educating the public and encouraging decision-makers to reduce pollution, protect ocean and coastal habitats, and sustainably use the ocean's bounty. On February 28, American Oceans Campaign announced it was joining with Oceana, a new, international ocean conservation organization. Oceana will bring together dedicated people from around the world to build an international movement to save the oceans through public policy advocacy, science and economics, legal action, grassroots mobilization, and public education.

In this respect, do not think that you are ever away from your Lord. We are, inthis life, reflections. Excerpted from the book Mercy oceans shore of Safety.
http://www.naqshbandi.org/library/safety/gurdjieff.htm
A Talk to the Gurdjieff Group
I am very happy that you came all the way here to see us. I heard many things from my shaykh about your master, Gurdiieff, the closeness he felt towards him and how, after he died, John Bennett used to come frequently to see him. Gurdjieff met Grandshaykh Abdullah Daghistani , at least, once. Some of John Bennett's American followers met Shaykh Nazim. In the path to God, we do not think that there are differences between brothers. All masters are one in this universe. All of them are the same. If you met this or that one, in our belief, it is the same; for all of them receive their power from One who is the center of everything, whose name in Arabic is Allah, the God, our Lord. One day, Gurdjieff met our Master secretly. Our Grandshaykh wished nothing to be known of that meeting and so it was not mentioned. All that was said in Gurdjieff's books was that he met some saints in Damascus and Baghdad with no mention of names. Still, he ordered John Bennett to meet with Grandshaykh frequently and allowed him to mention these meetings in his books. That is why John Bennett spoke about Grandshaykh. On the occasion of their secret meeting, Grandshaykh gave permission to Gurdjieff to use the power of the Nine Points with which some of you, I think, are familiar. However, he did not give Gurdjieff permission to use all that power and so Gurdjieff did not pass the full measure of that power on to his followers. The power Grandshaykh gave Gurdjieff was like that of a reflection in a mirrorresembling the original, but not the original. The secret of it he kept in his heart. Why? Because he knew that at the end of this world someone is coming who will use that power completely in all the earth. That time is the time of perfection and everything, at that time, will attain its perfection and be complete. And all saints in this world, in this universe, await that miraculous age.

As I sit on the beach listening to the sounds of the surfI wish! Actually, I'm sitting in my Midwest office listening to my new nature CD, and the sounds of soft piano and crashing wavesand that's the best I can do for now! You seethere are four passions in my lifemy Savior, my sweetheart, my sons, and my sea!! Now the sea, of course, is not mine, but I claim it! The source of the first three passions DO have rhyme and reasonthe fourth does not. It remains a mystery why the ocean holds such an intense attraction for meespecially when I'm afraid of water and can't swim! Now before you all invite me to your beachfront homes, (or offer me free swimming lessons, and I WILL decline...smile...), let me explain that since I somehow seem to find a devotional in everything I see, I just knew that somewhere in this passion of my life lay a devotional, just waiting to be written. And here it is! Enjoy God's ocean of love with me!

OCEAN ANIMALS Many animals live in the oceans, in a variety of conditions. Some marine biomes include benthic biomes (bottom dwellers), pelagic biomes (open seas near the surface), coral reef (warm shallow salt-water environments based on coral formation), littoral or intertidal areas (along the shore), estuarine biomes (where rivers meet oceans), etc. Click on an animal below to go to a printout:
