A study of prehistoric rock art in libya.

This site is devoted to the presentation and discussion of the rock-art of the Wadi al-Ajal, in the Fezzan region of south-west Libya. Several hundred engravings have so far been identified here. This rich concentration of rock-art spans the phase from at least 7 000 years ago until the present - a critical period of time which encompasses major transitions in human economy, culture and ideology from hunting and gathering to pastoralism, then to agriculture and more recently to industrialisation. The rock-art provides fascinating evidence of how human groups were living during this period, what their relationships with their environment were and what they considered of importance and value. Because rock-art is deliberately placed at specific locations in the landscape, a powerful relationship can often exist between rock-art sites and natural landscape features. This study explores this relationship and attempts to express the visual character of the rock-art locations through a series of photographic panoramas which provide a physical context for the engravings. Note: The photographs on this website open a larger version if clicked on. The panoramic images are very large, and may take some time to open.

Moammar Gadhafi has agreed to let international weapons inspectors enter Libya and says his country will dismantle its weapons of mass destruction programs, President Bush said Friday. For more on the military implications of this announcement, CNN's Lou Dobbs spoke with Pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr. STARR: Well Lou, here at the Pentagon [there is] always a heavy dose of reality and caution when any of these types of announcements come. In terms of the military implications, one of the first things people say to remember is that Libya, like other countries that have weapons of mass destruction programs, has scientific expertise, irrespective of [its] weapons ... or missiles ... [It has] a research and development community, people who have expertise on these problems. One of the key questions will be, where are those people, what other countries may they have gone to, what countries may they be helping?

Yes No VIEW RESULTS UNITED NATIONS (CNN) Britain has introduced a draft resolution at the United Nations Security Council that would completely lift U.N. sanctions against Libya. The move is part of a deal to compensate families of the 270 victims of the 1998 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Under the deal, Libya has agreed to pay $2.7 billion in compensation and will in turn have the sanctions imposed as punishment after Tripoli was accused of involvement in the bombing lifted. France has called for a similar settlement for victims of the 1989 bombing of a French UTA airliner and is threatening to use its veto power to block the British resolution. British U.N. Ambassador Emyr Jones Perry, who introduced the draft resolution, says he is hoping for an early decision.

The BERBERS
Descendants of the Libyan Amazons ?
T here are many cross connections between the Berber people living in North Africa and the ancient stories of the Libyan Amazons!
Very ancient rock engraving of a female(?) archer from Wadi In Habeter in southwestern Libya. Join in a virtual discovery tour! First of all, the Libyan Amazons were located in that part of Africa where the Berber peoples lived and still live. The Berbers are supposed to be aborigines. The Berbers call themselves in their language. There is definitely a strong similarity between the words and A further astonishing fact is the preeminent position of women in Berber society, though it depends to which extent the Berbers were absorbed by the Arabs. For about 1300 years the Berber peoples were threatened and in fact for the most part conquered and at last absorbed by Arab invaders.
There was a significant historical event at the first Arab invasion about 700 A.D. It was a female Berber leader named Kahina , who very successfully put up a fierce resistance to the Arab conquerors and even succeeded in driving them back, though in the end she was defeated and lost her life! Kahina led her life in the tradition of famous Amazon queens like Penthesilea . Isn't it very plausible that she was a descendant of the famous Libyan Amazons?
