CONTENTS ANB-BIA HOMEPAGE WEEKLY NEWS Libya A culture of racism RACISM Does President Gaddafi’s talk of «African Unity» have a more sinister meaning? In 1996, I happened to find myself in Libya where I stayed for more than six months in various parts of the country. Libya is a country which is known to have dabbled in terrorist activities outside its own frontiers, and where its citizens, as in other Arab countries on the African continent, have yet to come to terms with their fellow Africans who live south of the Sahara. Libya has been «home» to hundreds of thousands of citizens from countries like Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Ghana and Sudan, to name just a few. Most of these immigrants whose presence in Libya is the result of harsh political or economic situations in their own countries, decided to live in Libya either on a permanent or a temporary basis. They have settled for mainly menial jobs which the average Libyan would rather avoid. Some immigrants use Libya as a transit route for illegal migration to other countries, using false travel documents. They are assisted by a smuggling syndicate, which charges between US $2,000 and US $5,000 before taking in their clients, who are later routed through Tripoli and Tunis, and then smuggled into Malta where they are airlifted to various European destinations.

Callus and multiple shoots were produced. Nodal cuttings were propagated from the shoots using M. S. basic medium. A number of produced plantlets were transferred to the soil. All plantlets tested using indicator plants were virus-free. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader (free software to read PDF files) URL www.actahort.org Hosted by K.U.Leuven ISHS

Libya, isolated by much of the international community over the 1988 bombing of a PanAm plane above the Scottish town of Lockerbie, formally took responsibility for the incident in August 2003.
The move, part of a deal to compensate families of the 270 victims, heralded the lifting of UN sanctions. Four months later, Libya announced that it would abandon its attempts to develop weapons of mass destruction, opening the way for better relations with the West. OVERVIEW
    FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA A former Roman colony, Libya is a mostly desert country which saw invasions by Vandals, Byzantines, Arabs, Turks and more recently Italians before gaining independence in 1951. Oil was discovered in 1959, and with it the country was transformed into a wealthy monarchy. Ten years later, though, the king was overthrown in a coup led by the 27-year-old Muammar Gaddafi, and the country embarked on a radically new chapter in its history. Colonel Gaddafi's revolution has been based largely on distinguishing his country from the world around it. Ideas put forward in his Green Book aim at an alternative to both communism and capitalism, while Islam is adhered to but with a unique slant - Libya has its own calendar based on Muhammad's death, for example.

Cultural Sites in the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya A little-known - or poorly-known - heritage, preserved partly by the absence of tourism and offering an array of treasures, has observed the rise and fall of brilliant and sophisticated civilizations on this vast territory. Dating from prehistory to Islamic civilization, the five sites added to the World Heritage List between 1982 and 1986 provide a clear illustration that Libya has a heritage whose incalculable value belongs to all humanity. Three sites, Cyrene, Leptis Magna and Sabratha, bear witness to the life that flourished in Libya during the Punic, Greek, Roman and Byzantine eras. These sites - and particularly Leptis and Cyrene - are attracting attention from many foreign archaeologists, including teams from France, Italy and the United Kingdom. Unfortunately, the prehistoric site of Tadrart Acacus, a continuation of Tassili n'Ajjer in Algeria, is deteriorating because of tourists or specialist photographers who wet the cave paintings to make the drawings stand out better, or because of vandalism. Although diffidifficult to get to, this site is not guarded and has no protective mechanisms to keep visitors to keep away. Similarly, the ancient city of Ghadames, known - like Shibam in Yemen - as the 'pearl of the desert', is gradually falling into ruin because its fragile clay houses are not being maintained. The covered streets are becoming unusable and only a few inhabitants are struggling to pass on to future generations this architectural heritage with its unique style of construction and internal decoration.
