Libyan Arabs of Libya T he approximately 4.5 million Libyan Arabs are of mixed Arab and Berber descent. They predominantly inhabit the Mediterranean coastline of their country, but also reside in villages scattered throughout the vast Sahara Desert. The first Libyan mentioned in Scripture is Simon of Cyrene, who carried the cross of Christ on the way to His crucifixion. Libyans were also present on the day of Pentecost. Yet the Church, which once flourished in Libya, was stamped out by the Arab invasions which occurred in the 7th-11th centuries. Today, there are only a handful of Libyan believers in the entire world. Libyan culture is North African, with roots in Islamic as well as Christian, Berber, and Bedouin practices. Visitors to the country find the people to be generally very warm and hospitable. Women usually remain at home, although some do work outside the home. Due to the political climate in this century, Libya has been extremely closed to the Good News. Since the military coup in 1969, Libya has been governed by Colonel Muammar Qadhafi. Political control is almost exclusively in the hands of Qadhafi whose official title is 'revolutionary leader'. The political system of Libya is largely based on Qadhafi's own ideology, which has been described as a kind of Islamic or Arabic socialism inspired by the Arab nationalism that flourished in the Middle East during the 1960s.
