Library Skills Lesson Plans Finding library skills lesson plans on the internet is not always easy. There are many great sites that have collected together a plethora of lesson plans for every other subject. But the site with great library lesson plans has proven to be illusive until now. This site is intended to be the ultimate resource for librarians. It will continue to grow and change, so check back here often. If you find a site that needs to be added, just send an email to let us know. We are an elementary school, so the focus of this page will be lesson plans for the elementary librarian. However, this is suppose to be a librarian resource, so we will add sites for middle and high school librarians as we find them. Also, don't forget to check out Library Skills Activities for Students . The sites listed there can be used as lessons also. The difference is that those sites are for students to work and learn on a more independent level. Drawing Conclusions - older elementary This is a lesson plan to help students learn how to draw conclusions from what they are reading. The lesson is not to long and can be done in one class period. It is from the Scott Foresman reading series, so you may need to modify it with your own materials if your school does not use this series. However, this can be easily done. Make sure you have Acrobat Reader on your computer. This is in PDF format.

    Lessons from the Library
April is School Library Media Month, a great time to reexamine your students' library know-how! Do your students know diddly about Dewey? Do they believe that "biography" is a television show? Do they think call numbers belong in a telephone's memory? Are your students convinced that a "librarian" is a person born under the sign of Libra? If so, it's time to reel them in and get them reacquainted with reading, researching, and the library! Included: Five fun lessons to reinforce library skills! During your April observance of School Library Media Month, celebrate with lessons that encourage your students to rediscover the wealth of knowledge found in your school's library! Library skills can often get lost among the rigors of any curriculum, but these are the skills needed to complete tasks adults face every day finding information, summing it up, internalizing it, and sharing it. This month, schedule a visit to the library in person or online to sharpen your students' research skills!

    Overview
Port of Entry: Immigration is a sample lesson highlighting the immigrant experience in American life. Students assume the role of historical detective and travel back in time to the turn of the century. As historical detectives, they search for clues to the past in images and primary source documents from the American Memory collections. Students begin their detective work by examining a series of photographs depicting life and work on New York's Lower East side. They visit other immigrant neighborhoods, one in the Midwest, another in Texas. In their search for clues to the immigrant experience, students take an online site visit to Ellis Island, the portal to America for millions of immigrants arriving from Europe. Along the way students learn about the different waves of immigrants that transformed America into a multicultural "nation of nations." Students complete their investigation by reading the immigrant stories documented through personal interviews collected by the Federal Writers' Project in the 1930s. These life histories from American Memory contain compelling firsthand accounts of immigrant life in America.
