Developing memory skills: Activities to improve memory and reasoning skills
Laws G. Abstract - One problem in the development of children with Down syndrome that most concerns us is the limited short term memory found in nearly all the children we see. Since short term memory is important to most other mental functions including speech and language, we think it is essential to find out more about this aspect of development. This article aims to explain what we mean by short term memory, the ways in which recent research evidence suggests it is important to other language functions, and describes the research undertaken by Trust researchers to date and our current work Source - Laws G. All fourth graders are enrolled in a library skills class that rotates every four weeks with art, music, p.e., and theater. Students will be in the library skills class twice each year. In class, the students learn about the cataloging system used in the library, reinforcing what they have already learned and Murray Elementary School, and become familiar with library procedures. They are also introduced to standard reference materials, including CD-ROMs and KYVL (Kentucky Virtual Library), and also a little bout using the internet for research. There is also a "reading aloud" time. Books for reading aloud vary according to the interests of the class. However, there is a focus on the classics. Authors chosen in the past include Kenneth Graham (the author of Wind in the willows), Rudyard Kipling, Washington Irving, Sid Fleischman, and Robert Lawson. Often the children are surprised to discover that what they think of as a "Disney movie" was a book first.
