Complete Library Skills Activities Program: Ready-To-Use Lessons for Grades K-6 > Customer Review #1: some of us are still in the 19th century, unfortunately

Too bad most folks have a library with flexible scheduling and integration of the library skills with what is done in the classroom. Yeah, I do have computerized catalog, but the library here is still a teacher break, in the good ole art-music-PE-library rotation. The kids go to music and get taught music, they come to me and get taught library. This does not make sense, but hey, it pays the bills. This book has some good lessons on the Dewey Decimal System, using the encycolpedia, etc. that work for me, and would even work if you have a school library that does meaningful stuff.

Library Skill Activities for Students Use this page to find links that provide hands-on learning for your library students. All of these links will allow students to learn about the Dewey Decimal System and library organization on a more independent level. Dewey Decimal System "Do We" Really Know Dewey? This web-based tutorial of the Dewey Decimal System was created by students for students. It is an excellent, kid-friendly site. And because other students created it, they have used language and examples that kids can understand. This site would be great for younger students (3rd or 4th grade) who are just learning about the Dewey Decimal System. Let's Do Dewey This is a wonderful tutorial about the Dewey Decimal System ! It has online exercises that are to be done after each step of the tutorial. Clicking on wrong answers informs the student with a nice message to try again. Right answers reward students with the message to move forward. This tutorial would be for older students with a basic knowledge of library organization. Younger students with less experience would benefit from something that is a bit simpler. How To Use the Dewey Decimal System This is a wonderful site done by the Monroe County Public Library in Indiana. The page lists hotlinks to all the main classifications in the system. By clicking on each link, the user gets a description of that classification and some book titles that are examples for that classification. It also lists websites that would fall under that same Dewey classification. This would be a wonderful site to use for a whole class explanation of what each of the 10 broad topics are and how they break down further.

Library Skills Lesson Plans Finding library skills lesson plans on the internet is not always easy. There are many great sites that have collected together a plethora of lesson plans for every other subject. But the site with great library lesson plans has proven to be illusive until now. This site is intended to be the ultimate resource for librarians. It will continue to grow and change, so check back here often. If you find a site that needs to be added, just send an email to let us know. We are an elementary school, so the focus of this page will be lesson plans for the elementary librarian. However, this is suppose to be a librarian resource, so we will add sites for middle and high school librarians as we find them. Also, don't forget to check out Library Skills Activities for Students . The sites listed there can be used as lessons also. The difference is that those sites are for students to work and learn on a more independent level. Drawing Conclusions - older elementary This is a lesson plan to help students learn how to draw conclusions from what they are reading. The lesson is not to long and can be done in one class period. It is from the Scott Foresman reading series, so you may need to modify it with your own materials if your school does not use this series. However, this can be easily done. Make sure you have Acrobat Reader on your computer. This is in PDF format.

Hooked on Library Skills: A Sequential Activities Program for Grades K-6 > Customer Review #1: Hooked on Library Skills

This book might have worked fine 10 years ago but now it is outdated. Hooked on Library Skills pays no attention to the electronic age and meets few of the standards required for information technology. Many lessons teach children about card catalogues rather than how to access electronic resources. There were few lessons I could use in this book to teach K - 5.
