Collection Development Training (CDT) provides practical training in how to perform collection development activities in public libraries. Each activity is presented as a separate section with links to helpful Internet sites, lists of books and articles for further reading, and definitions of key terms. While this training may be useful to librarians in a variety of libraries, this site is intended primarily for librarians and other library staff working in Arizona's small and rural public libraries. CDT is sponsored by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records. To enter click CDT below. After viewing the CDT information, PLEASE take our on line survey . This provides valuable information that will allow us to revise the CDT program accordingly.

"There is a crisis of identity in public health. To ensure conditions in which people can be healthy we must work to change the underlying societal conditions. Public health has rarely been able to go beyond pointing at these larger issues, such as poverty, economic globalisation, and lack of political will." (Jonathan Mann 1997)
Break free from frames with this link. Important information.
This site is part of the WWW Virtual Library project, the first and in my humble opinion the best portal to the world-wide web. Information is categorised by: Please email Eberhard Wenzel if you know of any online information concerning Public Health which is not yet on this list. You may also wish to send me your comments or suggestions It is the policy of the WWW Virtual Library: Public Health only to include links to meaningful resources. This is why I have refrained from evaluating and marking the links individually. I believe that the purpose of such a library is the provision of the best I could find on the WWW. I have included descriptions of the links though, sometimes using the original description, sometimes writing my own.

http://www.independentlibraries.org/
The Montreal Association of Independent Libraries (MAIL), founded in 1997, is composed of Atwater Library (founded 1828), Fraser-Hickson Library (founded 1870), Jewish Public Library (founded 1914) and Montreal Children's Library (founded 1929).
These institutions are among the oldest libraries in Quebec providing continuous service to their users. By virtue of each library's special collections, they serve not only the communities and neighbourhoods in which they are located, but also a large segment of the population of the island of Montreal. They also have a national and international clientele.
The libraries formed this Association in order to achieve the following
objectives:
  • To support joint activities and projects such as inter-library loans, development of a community web site, shared programmes, and other initiatives.
To enhance services to users by combining and sharing resources.

87. Graphic Novels For Public Libraries
Annotated list of comics in book form, created for librarians by a librarian and comic book fan.

Recommended Graphic Novels for Public Libraries
selected and annotated by Steve Raiteri
latest revision 10/29/2003 Hello! By way of introduction: I'm a librarian at the Greene County Public Library in Xenia, Ohio, and for the past few years I've been buying graphic novels (comic books, that is) for my library system. They've proven very popular at our libraries, and I put this page together to help other librarians who may want to add graphic novels to their collections but have difficulty locating information about them. I've been a comic book reader for over 25 years, and this is a selective list of what I think are the best books we've gotten so far, out of over 1000 titles we've bought. (It also includes a few titles that I have not bought for the library yet, but hope to, if budget allows.) The list grew out of a handout I created for a program on graphic novels that I presented at an Ohio Library Council chapter conference in 1997, and I have updated it regularly since. I've read almost every book listed here. A word about terminology: a "graphic novel", by definition, is a stand-alone story in comics form, published as a book. Examples are

These volunteers communicate the excitement of JPL's space exploration missions and information about recent discoveries to people in their local communities. There are now 374 Ambassadors in 50 states and Puerto Rico bringing the excitement of space to the public. Ambassadors are space enthusiasts from various walks of life who are interested in providing greater service and inspiration to the community at large. The Solar System Ambassadors Program builds on and expands the outstanding efforts undertaken by the Galileo mission since 1997. Because of the success of the original Galileo Ambassadors program, JPL missions exploring Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Asteroids, Comets, Earth, the Sun and the Universe now come together to expand the program's scope to the Solar System and beyond. The Solar System Ambassadors Program is sponsored by the JET PROPULSION LABORATORY in Pasadena, CA, an operating division of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and a lead research and development center for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).

Libraries debate Net filtering

Staff Writer, CNET News.com
The notion of filtering Net access at public libraries received very different reactions from the city councils of Coppell, Texas, and San Jose, California, yesterday, where officials tried to balance concerns about online pornography with cries of censorship. Silicon Valley council members voted 8 to 3 against a plan to create "children Internet zones," by installing blocking software on computers designated for use by minors at the cities' 22 libraries. Councilwoman Pat Dando's proposal was inspired in part by the Supreme Court's decision on the Communications Decency Act , in which Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's partial dissent suggested creating "adult zones" to keep kids out of the Net's red-light districts. San Jose's Library Commission supported the idea, but it was opposed by groups such as the
