The Lower School Library houses an outstanding up-to-date collection of over 17,000 volumes and serves as an important resource to everyone in the Lower School. Staffed by a team of three professional librarians and a volunteer group of over 50 active parents, it is well-equipped to provide instruction in research skills, literacy, and the use of technology. Children are encouraged to check out and return books as often as they like. Special events sponsored by the library include author visits, book fairs, and a paperback book club.
The Mellon Library, inclusive of the Media Services program, provides a rich collection of current and classic resources in a welcoming environment for research and recreational use by the ASL community. This outstanding facility comprises 35,000 volumes of books, 5,000 items of AV software, over 70 CD-ROMS and some 200 magazine titles. The library staff is committed to instructing and assisting users in locating and maximizing the use of these resources. Both the print and other resource materials are accessed by the 25 computers in the library and other computers on campus. The software allows users to do intelligent searches for materials as well as see their check out status.

Every library user benefits from expanded access to information beyond the four walls of a single library building. Carbondale Public Library and other ILLINET libraries use electronic information networks such as the Internet for a variety of purposes: Access to shared automation systems that provide bibliographic access to the collections of local, regional, state, national and international libraries. Access to both the general and specialized shared or licensed databases available to ILLINET member libraries through regional and statewide cooperative programs. Access to the wealth of information resources available via the Internet.

Multiobjective optimization of combinatorial libraries
by D. K. Agrafiotis
1. Introduction
Prior to the advent of combinatorial chemistry, this process involved a simple prioritization of synthetic targets based on pre-existing structure-activity data, synthetic feasibility, experience, and intuition. This situation began to change as advances in parallel synthesis and high-throughput screening have enabled the simultaneous synthesis and biological evaluation of large chemical libraries containing hundreds to tens of thousands of compounds [ ]. Although throughput has increased dramatically, the number of compounds that can be created and tested in a reliable manner represents a tiny fraction of all the molecules of potential pharmaceutical interest, and the process is still fundamentally based on trial and error. It is becoming increasingly apparent that in order to maximize the probability of identifying sustainable drug candidates, combinatorial experiments must be carefully planned and take full advantage of whatever information is available about the biological target of interest. Whether it is used for lead discovery or optimization, the design of a good combinatorial library is a complex task that requires the simultaneous optimization of several, often conflicting, design objectives. In this paper, we present an overview of a general methodology for designing combinatorial and high-throughput screening experiments rooted in the principles of multiobjective optimization.

The GD libraries are the principle PHP module used for image manipulation, and are available from Boutel.Com, Inc. If you are lucky enough to be hosted on (or indeed own) a server running GD2.0 or above, you'll have the ability to use truecolour images in jpeg format (and in png if version 2.0.4+) and therefore, you won't really benefit by reading this tutorial. Those using GD2.0+ should be opting to use ImageCreateTrueColor in place of ImageCreate , and ImageCopyResampled in place of ImageCopyResized to assure use of maximum colour levels. If you're running anything under 2.0, read on!

Signing the child zone's keyset. Next, you need to submit the child zone's keyset to the parent zone so that the parent zone can sign the keyset. The parent zone uses the dnssec-signkeyset command to sign a child zone's keyset. For example, to instruct the parent zone example.com to sign the child zone us.example.com's keyset, use the command dnssec-signkeyset keyset-us.example.com. Kexample.com.+003+47063 By default, the command uses the signature start and end times you specified when you created the child zone's keyset, but you can use the -s and -e options to overwrite those times. The final parameter is the parent zone's key tag. The command saves the signed keyset output file as signedkey-zone.

Maximizing distributions while minimizing the grandfather amount. (Employee Benefit Plans)
by Berman, Kevin
    Abstract-

1. maximize their distributions from retirement plans, while 2. avoiding the excess distributions tax, while 3. preserving the maximum grandfather amount for use in the future. For some taxpayers, a simple algebraic formula can be used to calculate the amount of distributions necessary to achieve these results. The Excess Distributions Penalty IRC Sec. 4980A imposes a nondeductible 15% excise tax on excess distributions from retirement plans. The tax applies to aggregate distributions from all qualified plans, IRAs, and IRC Secs. 403(a) and 403(b) annuities of an individual. The excess distribution is the aggregate amount of the retirement distributions during any taxable year to the extent that such amount received exceeds a threshold amount, which is the greater of 1. $150,000, or; 2. $112,500, adjusted at the same time and in the same manner as under IRC Sec. 415(d). IRC Sec. 415(d) prescribes annual cost-of-living adjustments (i.e., indexing for inflation). For 1993, the $112,500 indexed for inflation is $144,551. Once the indexed amount reaches $150,000 or more, the threshold amount will be the same for all individuals, regardless of whether a grandfather election was made.

There are an increasing number of individuals who run their businesses by selling tangible benefits stemming from the most intangible of productsINFORMATION and few of these are traditional information professionals (i.e. librarians, documentalists, records managers, archivists). Why should this be the case? This full day workshop is designed to outline what is essential for establishing and running these types of businesses within a traditional library, or transformed center, stressing the importance of having solid strategies for pricing, the necessity of addressing the market, being proactive and creative in sales shots, and always projecting the image of credibility.

ABSTRACT
The Association of Research Libraries' spotlight on special collections in "Building on Strength: Developing an ARL Agenda for Special Collections" has brought to the forefront many of the challenges and strengths that special collections have to offer to the research library setting (Association of Research Libraries 2001). The concern over access issues expressed in the Action Agenda highlights the need for a renewed focus with a realistic understanding of the process and the expenditure of resources. The agenda has confirmed a longstanding consensus among curators and archivists that access is a primary goal in the archival endeavor. In the past, archivists have largely been left to their own creative devices in communicating the contents of their collections to the public. To facilitate access, they created card catalogs, inventories, registers, indexes of various types, calendars, file plans, and the ubiquitous, nebulous "finding aid." Print catalogs made it possible to advertise beyond the confines of the repository, but this was spotty exposure at best. Repositories needed to work steadily to expose potential researchers to the location, content, and contextual information of collections. Online catalogs provided one ray of hope for repositories. Repositories could create collection-level representations of their holdings to entice patrons to their doors. This served two purposes. First, patrons using an online catalog to research a topic would be directed to the special collections material because of its relevance, when they previously may not have considered archival or manuscript materials as germane to their research. Second, with the advent of the Web and the suspension of geographical and temporal limitations, distant patrons could find the manuscript or archival material that they sought. Electronic union databases aided in this effort, but patrons needed to know that those databases existed and how to search them.

Making the Segway noisier because some people are scared doesn't seem to be the answer, because people will continue to be scared until they become accustomed to it. There are lots of people scared of any new thing, regardless, until they have experience with it. San Francisco is an excellent example of that, and I don't think any amount of legislating to make changes in the Segway would have any affect on it.
