Political parties
of the United States traditionally divide the available spectrum of choices into two camps. The first is known as the "major parties" and the second as the "third parties" camp. This is due to the fact that the United States has a two-party system , with the two largest centrist parties dividing the vote between themselves in the national elections. This is partly a consequence of the first-past-the-post election system but also due to restrictive ballot access laws imposed on third parties. Many third parties throughout U.S. history have achieved regional success and some (notably the Prohibition Party and the Socialist Party ) have had major portions of their platforms incorporated into the "major parties" platforms. While only the Republican Party has gone on to become a dominant player in American political life, the overall political platforms of several third parties have taken root in the American political landscape. This article gives information on the growing third political party in america, the Libertarians.
Do you believe in freedom? Have you ever stopped to take a good look at the beliefs and ideals of the leading two political parties in the United States? If you do, you will notice how they both claim to believe in freedom, but in reality are hypocrites. The Republicans believe in freedom in economic issues, but want government to regulate personal/moral issues. The Democrats believe in freedom in personal/moral issues but want the government to get involved in economic issues. The Libertarian Party is the only political party that believes in true freedom. They believe in freedom for economic issues and freedom for personal/moral issues. The Libertarians believe the less government, the better. Libertarians believe people should have the right to decide how best to live their lives as long as they dont harm or interfere with others equal rights to do the same. Libertarians know that society can never agree on the best way for everyone to live their life, so they believe in letting each individual make his own decisions. bodyOffer(18572) Another very important aspect to the Libertarian philosophy is personal responsibility. With freedom comes consequences for actions and decisions. If a person makes a bad decision, such as using drugs, he or she will face the consequences of that decision and must take responsibility for it.

The Libertarian Party is the largest and fastest growing alternative political party in the United States. It has already attracted hundreds of thousands of liberty-minded citizens concerned with curbing out-of-control, bureaucratic and oppressive governments - federal, state and local. The Libertarian Party believes that individual freedom coupled with personal responsibility form the basis of a benevolent community, country and world. We wholeheartedly support the Constitution and the Bill of Rights as they were originally intended: as foundations of a free, just and humane society.

57. The Libertarian Party Is Missing The Boat
Those Americans who might otherwise embrace libertarian philosophy often believe the party stands for extreme political positions.
http://users.aol.com/mrjeffchlg/libboat.htm
The Libertarian Party is Missing the Boat
The American Electorate is dissatisfied with the two major political parties. Recent polls suggest that a majority of Americans yearn for a viable third party that reflects their values and better serves their interests. With great fanfare, Ross Perot and his supporters established the Reform Party in California in eighteen days; they expect similar success in other States. But, where is the Libertarian Party? After all, the Libertarian platform espouses most of the tenets of the so-called "Republican Revolution," and the Libertarians were saying it first. The libertarian philosophy is gaining wider acceptance throughout America, especially in the West. The Libertarian Party, however, suffers from disorganization and parochialism. The Party has thus failed to assume its proper role as the real alternative to the Democrats and Republicans. Libertarianism emphasizes individual freedom, small government, and low taxes. Libertarians stress personal responsibility, with minimal government intrusion on the individual's ability to succeed or fail. Established in 1971, the Libertarian Party has gradually swelled to a national registry of 120,000 citizens; 70,000 of these registered Libertarians live in California. The Party faithful comprise 12,000 dues-paying members, 2,000 of which reside in California. With their focus on the individual, however, Libertarians tend to distrust government and other social institutions. This philosophy impedes Party growth; it's difficult to build a political party with members who don't believe in political parties. Therefore, most Libertarian Party policy is shaped at the local level, with little coordination between County Chapters or oversight by State and National leaders.
