American-Liberia Relations During World War II
While assisting the Liberian Government, Lester Walton was critical of the corruption and the human rights violation perpetrated by Liberian Government officials against their own people. In a letter to the US State Department dated March 2, 1940, Ambassador Walton noted that there were Liberian officials who had "...the reputation for acquiring a big bank account on a small salary." On the human rights violation against the indigenous people, an act that had caused the United States to suspend recognition of the Barclay Administration, Walton wrote Harry Mcbride (he served in Liberia as Financial Advisor to the Liberian Government under the Loan Agreement) that, "Forced labor, vicious exploitation of the natives by Frontier Force, unjust and excessive fines are some of the contributory factors to occasion resentment and dissatisfaction, impelling many natives to reluctantly settle in Sierra Leone."

Before the war, Liberia was West Africa's center of commerce and transportation, and attracted industries like petroleum, paint, pharmaceuticals and cement. Many impressive buildings were built, along with the old University of Liberia (opened in 1862, university status in 1951), and a secondary school system, hospitals etc. However, the infrastructure has been largely destroyed by the fighting in recent years. The Snap shake is a typical Liberian handshake. The Firestone Plantation is the world’s largest one. Liberia is the first ever republic of Africa and has never been colonized. When peace has been returned, Liberia has much to offer, including friendly people, lush landscapes and some of the last remaining virgin rainforest in West Africa.

Thousands fled Liberia for the US during civil conflict
By Jonathan Paye-Lahley in Monrovia The Liberian government has deployed police across the country to arrest any one found selling or buying photographs of Osama Bin Laden. He is the prime suspect named by the US for the terror attacks at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Police Director Paul Mulbah said anyone now involved with the photos would be treated as "terrorists". Bin Laden has denied any responsibility.
Arrest for Liberians selling or buying Bin Laden posters
The weekend directive followed a brisk trade by newspaper vendors and street sellers in the capital of pirated and copied photographs of Saudi dissident Bin Laden. The Police Director said although people buying the pirated photographs of Bin Laden were doing so "out of mere curiosity", it could give a negative interpretation of the situation. Thousands fled He said if the sales were left to go on unchecked, it would appear as if Liberians were happy with the Saudi-born "terrorist."

Manage alerts What is this? MONROVIA, Liberia (Reuters) Liberia's two rebel groups said Monday they wanted the head of a transitional government appointed in October to quit, before they would start to disarm their fighters in line with a peace deal. In a joint statement, the two rebel factions known as LURD and Model accused the chairman of the interim government, Gyude Bryant, of lack of transparency and confusion in the way his administration in the West African country is run. "The LURD and Model...are vehemently and unconditionally calling for the immediate, uncompromising and peaceful removal and subsequent replacement of Gyude Bryant as Chairman of the NTLG (National Transitional Government of Liberia) before the commencement of disarmament," the statement said. The rebels, who joined a government formed after an August peace accord meant to draw a line under 14 years of civil war, have complained about some key government appointments.
