Liberia: Overview
COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: Liberia is a developing West African country which is recovering from seven years of devastating civil war (1989-97). Although a democratically elected government was installed in August 1997, limited progress has been made toward the following goals: resettlement of refugees and displaced persons, reintegration of former combatants, reconstruction of the country?s infrastructure, respect for human rights and the rule of law, a stable environment for economic development, and the elimination of corruption. Tourism facilities are poor or, in many cases, nonexistent.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A passport and visa are required, as is evidence of a yellow fever vaccination. For persons who are traveling from countries that do not have a Liberian embassy or consulate, an airport entry visa may be obtained, but the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization must authorize the visa in advance of arrival. Further information on entry requirements for Liberia can be obtained from the Embassy of the Republic of Liberia, 5201 16th street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20011. The telephone numbers are (202) 723-0437 to 723-0440. Overseas inquiries should be made to the nearest Liberian embassy or consulate.
EMBASSY LOCATION/REGISTRATION: U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to register and to obtain updated information on travel and security in Liberia at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy at 111 United Nations Drive, Mamba Point, Monrovia, Liberia, tel. (231) 226-370, fax (231) 226-154. U.S. citizens who wish to write to the American Embassy may address letters to the American Embassy Monrovia, Consular Section, Washington, D.C. 20521-8800. Consular assistance in Liberia is limited to the greater Monrovia area.

Response to Information Request Number: LBR01003.ZAR Date: 5 October 2000 Subject: Liberia: Information on the Krahn ethnic group From: INS Resource Information Center, Washington, DC Keywords: Liberia / Cultural assimilation / Cultural identity / Ethnicity / Indigenous language / Linguistic minorities Query: What language/dialects do the Krahn people speak? Are there cultural distinctions among the Krahn that would differentiate them from other ethnic groups in Liberia? Are the Krahn dispersed throughout Liberia, or only found mainly in Grand Gedeh county? Would it be credible that a member of the Krahn ethnic group would not speak a Krahn dialect, but only English? Is it plausible that a Krahn, born and raised in Monrovia, would not have any knowledge about the Krahn dialect or language or customs? Response: Ezekiel Pajibo, Senior Policy Analyst with Africa Faith and Justice Network, states that there are no major cultural distinctions, such as facial markings or physical attributes, that characterize the Krahn group. He suggests the surname might be an indication of the ethnic group to which an individual belongs. Both Ezekiel Pajibo and a former Africa researcher for the INS Resource Information Center, Solomon Toweh, agree that the primary distinction of a Krahn would be their language, however, it is possible that a member of the Krahn ethnic group would not speak a Krahn dialect (Pajibo 7 Sept. 2000; Toweh 6 Sept. 2000).

By Kathryn Westcott
BBC News Online
The United States is coming under increasing international pressure to intervene in the fierce fighting in Liberia. The US has long historical and cultural ties with the West African nation but, over the years, it has become increasingly disengaged from it.
A rebel offensive in Monrovia seems to have ended hopes of a swift peace In the early 1820s, hundreds of freed US slaves were sent to coastal Africa by anti-slavery societies. When, in 1847, they founded the continent's oldest republic, they gave it a constitution and a flag modelled after the country they had come from. But, despite its strong association with the US, Liberia does not have a conventional colonial history. It was never ruled from Washington in the same way as most other African countries were ruled by colonial powers - such as Ghana from London and Ivory Coast from Paris. For most of the country's history, Liberian-Americans, descendents of the freed slaves, ruled the country.

9 August 2000 Liberia's female face
by Karin Achtelstetter
Monrovia is celebrating. 26 July marks the 153rd anniversary of Liberia's independence. It is a national holiday. The main streets are closed from early morning and traffic is diverted through side streets. Distinguished guests are expected - President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, President Gnassingbe Eyadema of Togo, President Alpha Oumar Konare of Mali and Gambia's Head of State, Yahya Jammeh. All in all, an unusual day to begin a women's solidarity visit to Liberia. A five-member international ecumenical delegation of women will spend a full week visiting women and women's organizations in the country. The five women want to find out at first hand about the situation of women and children in post-war Liberia. They also want to assure the women of Liberia of international solidarity and, above all, they want to listen. This solidarity visit was planned and organized by representatives of the World Council of Churches (WCC), the World YWCA, the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) and the Lutheran World Federation (LWF). It is indeed an unusual day: the festively decorated hall, the men in tails or dinner jackets, the women - Liberian women in key positions in society - in evening dresses, official robes or uniform. The Supreme Court is headed by a woman, as is the Commission on Reconciliation. Women are in leading positions in the police force and in the army. During the civil war some of them fought for Charles Taylor's National Patriotic Front and reached the rank of commander.

Country Info Liberia Introduction Liberia General Data Liberia Maps Liberia Culture ... Liberia Time and Date Liberia People Back to Top The people of Liberia are classified into three major groups: the indigenous people, who are in the majority and who migrated from the western Sudan in the late Middle Ages; black immigrants from the United States (known historically as Americo-Liberians) and the West Indies; and other black immigrants from neighbouring western African states who came during the anti-slave-trade campaign and European colonial rule. The Americo-Liberians are most closely associated with founding Liberia. Most of them migrated to Liberia between 1820 and 1865; continued migration has been intermittent. Americo-Liberians controlled the government until a military coup in 1980. Liberia has a population (2001 estimate) of 3,225,837, giving the country an overall population density of 33 persons per sq km (84 per sq mi). Civil war between 1989 and 1996 drove hundreds of thousands of Liberians into neighboring countries as refugees. An estimated 47 percent of those remaining live in cities and towns. Before the war, a majority of the population was engaged in agriculture, and many maintained their traditional ways of life. There are 16 ethnic groups that make up Liberia's indigenous population. The Kpelle in central and western Liberia is the largest ethnic group. Americo-Liberians who are descendants of freed slaves that arrived in Liberia early in 1821 make up an estimated 5% of the population.
