Liberian Rappers lament the `struggle between brother and brother'
Review by Norm Dixon, Green Left Weekly, 2 June 1999. Hip hop is popular among the youth of Africa, especially west Africa and South Africa, where it is still a grassroots, street-level music of rebellion, protest and struggle. African hip hop has yet to lose its creative dynamism the way its counterpart in the US has as it has been transformed from street art to just another type of commercial pop music.

Teacher's Guide - Liberia, January 2001 Teacher's Guide prepared by Jo Sullivan, Salem Public Schools.
Prior Knowledge:
American students may have almost no knowledge of Liberia (Is it where Quadaffi lives?) and frequently have much misinformation about Africa. It is very important to establish what the images and stereotypes of African peoples and cultures are before embarking on new information. Ask students what they already know about Liberia. Whether or not they are able to list any information, then move to asking them, "What do you think of when you think about Africa?" If students are adolescents, or aware that they are not supposed to have stereotypes about Africa, it may be helpful to ask instead, "What do you think most American students think about when they think of Africa?" Through the lessons related to this issue, refer back to students' prior knowledge and expectations, to make connections and to adjust and discuss images and knowledge gained. Background and Context:
It is important to balance African American settler aspirations and experience with the reality of the economy, society, and politics of the African coast - real people already lived on the coast. Liberia's origins and history meant that segments of Liberian society lived in uneasy coexistence, sometimes oppression, and then outright conflict. Read aloud or with students the articles on pages 3 - 5 and 7 - 10 as a general introduction to the history of the region and the origins of Liberia as a modern nation. Understanding the history of Liberia leads to understanding the later history of Liberia's failure to bring about the hopes of its founders.

The enormity of the problem is startling. Years worth of priceless culture and artifacts which recount Liberian history have been lost by years of senseless conflict. Our children have lost a great deal from not only the loss of innocent lives, the maiming of civilians, and the resulting chaos in Liberia. They have lost more, a part of our identity. CULTURE AND TRADITIONS
The assimilation of two cultures - the one brought by the settlers from the United States and that of the tribal people they met on the soil - has often left many pondering the true and actual culture of the Liberian people. The two groups have, however, been able to portray the joint cultures, albeit difficult for others to adopt. Traditional practices, like the Masonic Craft of the settlers or the Poro/Sande societies of the natives, remain yet somewhat exclusive to their kind alone.
Intermarriages between the two groups have served to bridge the cultural gap. The Liberian system allows for two types of marriages - the statutory and the customary, the latter giving room for indulgence into polygamy, while the former upholds the one man, one wife concept. Customary laws are still respected to the extent that they do not contravene the Constitution.
LANGUAGE
The official language of Liberia is English. A peculiar sort of pidgin English is generally spoken by many in the cities and towns. There are, however, about 28 tribes speaking some four dozens dialects, but 16 of the tribes are considered the major ones.

History of the Dan people from liberia. On arrival they discovered thatthey were reallocated on free land now known as liberia.
http://www.rebirth.co.za/Dan_tribal_art_history_and_culture.htm
Dan Mask Art History Country - Liberia African Art Dan Tribe. The Dan mask to the left was used during initiation ceremonies. These types of masks are made and worn exclusively, by male dancers. Dan masks are unique and only carved by initiated members of the male Poro society. The mask (see image to the left) served to protect the young initiate against destructive or evil forces from the time of initiation, till he one day enters the spirit realm. The Dan people classify surroundings into two realms - the village with all inhabitants (human realm), and the forest (bon) (spirit realm) where the spirits reign, and wild animals roam freely. The forest is regarded as sacred, and crossing the boundary between the human realm, and the spirit realm, may only be done by saying a prayer and wearing materials from both worlds. This creates a link between the two realms. The mask depicted above is a perfect example of the materials. Once the male mask dancer dons the mask, he is transformed into a spirit. The mask dancer goes into a deep trance during rituals and brings forth messages of wisdom from his forebears. The messages is inaudible and in uncontrollable utters, a wise man accompany the dancer during the ritual and translates the messages. The messages are often words of great wisdom, prescribing a way of life that will lead to longevity, health and prosperity.

History Haunts War-Torn Liberia Stefan Lovgren
for National Geographic News
July 21, 2003
As war-ravaged Liberia slides deeper into despair, 41 U.S. Marines arrived today to evacuate embassy staff and foreign aid workers. Wire services reported today that a larger force of 2,000 Marines may be deployed shortly with other international peacekeeping forces. For several weeks, newspaper editorials have debated the pros and cons of sending American peacekeepers to the small West African nation. Some commentators maintain that even a small contingent of troops would stabilize Liberia; others say the mission is too risky. Regardless of their position, the editorials agree that the United States and Liberia have a special historical bond because Liberia, the oldest republic in Africa, was "founded by freed American slaves" in the early 19th century. Read the full Joseph Jenkins Roberts arrived in Liberia in 1829 from Virginia. In 1839, Roberts was appointed Vice Colonial Governor of the Commonwealth of Liberia, and took over as Governor of the Commonwealth in 1841, when Thomas Buchanan died. Roberts served as the first and seventh president of Liberia.
