Holy! A Grassroots Aboriginal Political Movement!

by Tehaliwaskenhas - Bob Kennedy, Oneida

www.turtleisland.org It's that time of the year again. A time for growth! Blossoms sprout, birds sing their praises of a west coast spring and fish fantasies fill our minds. But something else has been nurtured in British Columbia this year. The growth of a new political movement. Considering BC's track record on spawning new parties you might not get excited. However, this one is different. For weeks Aboriginal leaders and community activists have been deep inside the world of political planning. On Vancouver Island, on the Mainland, in Prince George, Rupert, Kamloops, Kelowna and elsewhere they have had their heads together scheming - 'conspiring to succeed' is a favourite term I like to use. People of like minds getting together to create ways of succeeding in the best interests of their children, families and communities. Aboriginal sensitivities command a high profile as British Columbia prepares for a May 16th election. With the opposition Liberals leading in the polls, political polarization is very evident and BC's First Nations are at the forefront of the debate.

The Liberal Party of the United States
The time has come for Liberals to stand together as a political force against the police state that the United States has become. The number of black pages on the internet is just an indication of those who are willing to ACT to make the Liberal voice heard, and the numbers who will SUPPORT our actions are far, far more. WE ARE FINALLY MAKING PROGRESS! Space has been donated to allow us to begin, at least, to setup the databases for party registrations. We do not have full telnet access at that location, but can upload cgi scripts that will automate registrations and database generations. The plan is to permit online registration of all who wish to be formally counted, with required info for submission of the petitions to the different states and territories to enable THE LIBERAL PARTY to be listed on their ballots. All information given by registrants will be given to the Departments of State in their home states and territories. Registrants will each have the option to permit or deny the publication of their names (addresses, contact info considered separately) on datalists for contact by Party activists. Those who wish to register just to create the Party, and do not wish to be bothered by activists, WILL NOT BE REVEALED to ANY except the STATE AGENCIES THAT REQUIRE THEIR INFO. Under no circumstances will registrants with the party be identified to other than the offices to which such release is voluntarily given, and all potential data managers will be legally sworn to confidentiality therefor.

Who is the MC? Alan Jones, of course.
And who has been busy over the past few weeks recording interviews with citizens of note paying tribute to the PM? For use on a big video screen to encourage guests to fork out more dollars to the Liberal Party?

The mainstream conservative goal shared by mainstream liberals, with arguments about ways and means has been containment of communism. The extreme right position has been to roll back communism through military, but the conservative view (unlike that of the father of containment George Kennan) has never been that contained communism would collapse of its own internal contradictions. The politics of projection
In the tit-for-tat world of Republican-Democratic duopoly politics, "I know you are but what am I" is a revered comeback for beleaguered ideologues. Is there any hope for those of us more interested in principles and truth than in the trivialities of two-party politics? Democrats respond to the claim that John Kerry is a " flip-flopper " by itemizing the issues on which Bush has staked out territory on both sides of the fence. When the GOP criticized Kerry for voting against "vital weapons systems," Democrats/liberals pointed out that Cheney had cast similar votes when he was in the Congress. When Team Bush claims that Kerry wants to raise taxes, the "opposition" notes that Republican led state governments have been raising taxes for years. Etc. Does this pattern of allegation on the part of the Bush campaign indicate a conscious strategy, or is it rather an unconscious projection, a naive hypocrisy? Clearly, on the assumption that everyone hears the allegation but few catch the rebuttal, it could be worthwhile (though risky) to determine which criticisms would be most damaging to your own presidential bid, and then level them against your opponent before he can call you on them. But then again, perhaps this is just one more example of the Bush administration's ineptitude: it can't avoid getting caught in its own rhetorical traps. Whatever the case may be, political ping-pong has been virtually built into the presidential campaign at the tactical level.

//Javascript containing image protection function //Javascript containing image protection function //Javascript containing image protection function Home Events Political Parties Rise to Power The Liberals came to power in Alberta as soon as the province entered Confederation in 1905. Prime Minister Sir Wilfred Laurier appointed George Bulyea , a Liberal Minister in the North-West Territories Executive Council, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Bulyea then selected Liberal leader Alexander Rutherford to serve as interim Premier of the new province. Rutherford decided upon four other Liberals to serve in his cabinet. The appointed government continued following Alberta's first election on November 7, 1905. Frederick Haultain , Premier of the North-West Territories prior to the creation of Alberta, had envisioned a different governmen t from the one the federal Liberals helped engineer. He wanted a strong non-partisan provincial government to preside over the territories that would become Alberta and Saskatchewan. He had achieved responsible government for the North-West Territories in 1897 and had cooperated equally with liberal- and conservative-minded council members in the territorial Assembly. However, Ottawa still controlled some matters of "local" interest, including education and natural resources. Laurier's government was weary of handing these responsibilities to a single province that could undermine its own influence. Instead, he adopted a rival plan to create two new provinces, Alberta and Saskatchewan, with fewer powers in exchange for financial compensation. The Autonomy Bills set out the provisions of this plan.

Nuclear Politics There are three spheres or levels of Government in Australia. Firstly, Local Councils represent local communities and have the power to make some local laws. (The Nuclear Free Zones campaign is working at this level). The leader of a Local Government authority is normally called the President or more commonly, Mayor. Secondly, State Government manages most of the public services we are familiar with and manages most of the laws that directly affect us. The state leader is known as the Premier, (presently the Hon. 13. Political Parties In a free society, differences of political sentiment result in different political parties. These sentiments resolve themselves naturally into two basic parties: the authoritarian (or monarchist, tory, etc.) that favors government that controls the people, and the democratic (or republican, liberal, etc.) that favors government controlled by the people. The body of the nation chooses a path that is mapped by one or the other of these parties.
"In every free and deliberating society, there must, from the nature of man, be opposite parties, and violent dissensions and discords; and one of these, for the most part, must prevail over the other for a longer or shorter time." Thomas Jefferson to John Taylor, 1798. ME 10:45 "In an absolute government there can be no... equiponderant parties. The despot is the government. His power suppressing all opposition, maintains his ministers firm in their places. What he has contracted, therefore, through them, he has the power to observe with good faith; and he identifies his own honor and faith with that of his nation." Thomas Jefferson to John Langdon, 1810. ME 12:377 "Warring against [the principles] of the people,... there is no length to which [the delusion of the people] may not be pushed by a party in possession of the revenues and the legal authorities of the United States, for a short time indeed, but yet long enough to admit much particular mischief. There is no event, therefore, however atrocious which may not be expected." Thomas Jefferson to Samuel Smith, 1798. (*) ME 10:56

The Repressive Side of Right Wing Populism
What can possibly explain the Reform Party and the discussions about recruiting Pat Buchanan, that include possible support from H. Ross Perot, and Lenora Fulani? We think the rhetoric of right wing populism is attractive to some forces on the left who side with business nationalists and isolationists because of joint opposition to global "free trade" treaties that undeniably benefit international corporate elites at the expense of working people. Liberals and progressives are being asked to ignore the historic prejudice behind right wing populism. Consider the statement of John Talbott, the Reform Party spokesperson in New Hampshire: "If you close your eyes, it is difficult to hear much of a difference between Ralph Nader on the left and Pat Buchanan on the right when they talk about corruption in government, the excesses of corporate welfare, the devastating effect of free international trade on the American worker and a desire to clean big money and special-interests out of Washington. There's a reason for this; 91 percent of the American people consider themselves middle class or working class. The time is now for a new political party that is neither right nor left, neither conservative nor liberal, but created and built to represent the hard-working average American in reforming our government."

Where have all the Liberals gone?
The absence of real choice among political parties
By James Blevins Published: Friday, August 29, 2003 As election year 2004 approaches, I'm struck that once again the issue of two parties and loyalty to democracy will emerge again. This is an entirely frustrating issue for me, as I find myself without a realistic choice. What if there are no candidates that represent my point of view?
Maybe this is a common problem. However, I am disturbed by a trend that seems to be continuing steadily since the 1980s and the advent of President Reagan's election and his conservatization of the Republican Party beyond the scope of what was previously known.
It may also be argued that this was the point for a large departure toward issue-centered politics and the division of voters based more along the lines of abortion rights/anti-abortion or pro gun/anti-gun control issues, to name only two.
While I'm relatively sure that this has a significant intersection with the issues of both parties' swing to the right, that is not entirely my concern. Rather, what happened to the Liberal or leftist choices in politics? Were they ever there?
