The largest is the Social Democrats, which is also the party that has played the most prominent role in Swedish politics in the past one hundred years. The other parties are the Moderates (formerly Conservatives), Liberals, Christian Democrats, Center Party (formerly Agrarians), Left Party (formerly Communists) and Green Party. The parties have traditionally been grouped into a rightist (non-socialist) and leftist (socialist) bloc. Toward the end of the 20thcentury, however, partially new dividing lines also began to play a major role, especially environmental issues and European economic and political integration. Today the parties face new challenges, among them a growing problem in recruiting new members, as well as a general distrust of established political institutions. The origins of the parties Somewhat later, two new parties emerged. On the one hand, the Communist Party was established in 1917 by the social democratic youth movement and party intellectuals who disliked the political pragmatism that characterized their party's stance on ideological principles. On the other hand, farmers' representatives began to break away from other parties, because they found it increasingly difficult to make themselves heard, for example, in the conservative camp. In 1922 the Agrarian Party, forerunner of today's Center Party, was established.

Related Category: British And Irish History The Liberal party was an outgrowth of the Whig party that, after the Reform Bill of 1832 (see Reform Acts ), joined with the bulk of enfranchised industrialists and business classes to form a political alliance that, over the next few decades, came to be called the Liberal party. Much of the Liberal program was formulated by an important manufacturing middle-class element of the party known as the Radicals, who were strongly influenced by Jeremy Bentham . The Liberals distinguishing policies included free trade, low budgets, and religious liberty. Their anti-imperialism reflected confidence in Britain's economic supremacy. Most Liberals believed in the economic doctrines of laissez-faire and thought labor unions, factory acts, and substantial poor relief a threat to rapid industrialization.

Liberal International
Liberal International is the world federation of liberal political parties. Founded in 1947 it has become the pre-eminent network for liberal parties and for the strengthening of liberal democracy around the world. There are a number of common principles which unite all liberal parties from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe; human rights, free and fair elections and multiparty-democracy, social justice, tolerance, social market economy, free trade, environmental sustainability and a strong sense of international solidarity. Naturally in the application of these principles in different national circumstances there is diversity among liberal parties.

What We Say
Liberalism
Liberals are committed to build and safeguard free, fair and open societies, in which they seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one is enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. Liberals champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals. We acknowledge and respect the right to freedom of conscience and the right of everyone to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. The freedom to be creative and innovative can only be sustained by a market economy, but it must be a market that offers people real choices. This means that we want neither a market where freedom is limited by monopolies or an economy disassociated from the interests of the poor and of the community as a whole. Liberals are optimistic at heart and trust the people while recognising the need to be always vigilant of those in power.

I had some input into the Irish entries. 38 political parties are registered to contest elections in Northern Ireland. 16 (including one that is no longer registered) have a serious political record and are described in some detail below. Another 9 minor parties have stood, or seem likely to stand, in Northern Ireland elections. The remaining 14 are parties on the Great Britain electoral register which have taken advantage of the fact that it costs nothing more to register for Northern Ireland but seem unlikely to contest elections. [Liberal Times] Political Parties and Ideological Mainstreams
By Ronald Meinarudus Manila - It is a fundamental insight that more than one solution is available for any given societal problem. How and with what recipe a government chooses to tackle a political, economic or social challenge is strongly determined by ideological inclinations. Basically, we can differentiate between three political paradigms ? socialism, conservatism and liberalism. In pluralistic democracies these three mainstreams (or combinations of the three) tend to be represented in competing political parties in one form or the other. Still, in today¡¯s political world it is not always easy to identify political leaders with clear-cut political profiles. Ideological convergence has led to political confusion. In many countries, political parties are mere voting clubs, political machines without ideological content. This is particularly the case in many Asian countries, where political parties and ideologies for various historical, cultural and sociological reasons play a rather different role than they do in the so-called developed democracies of the West. I have become aware of these differences in the past years working for the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation, first in South Korea and now in the Philippines; in both countries members of political parties are important target groups of our educational programs. In South Korea, geography remains a stronger political force than ideology. The voters¡¯ decision on election- day is not so much determined by ideological preference, but by regional criteria. I will never forget that not-so-funny political joke with which a Korean friend explained to me this phenomenon shortly after I had come to Seoul many years ago. ¡°(Former political leader) Kim Dae-jung could nominate even a dog as a candidate for mayor in his hometown in the South West of the peninsula, and the people would vote for it¡±. Importantly, all major political forces in South Korea agree that political regionalism is not compatible with a modern democratic order and must be overcome. Fortunately, there are indications that traditional voting patterns along geographical lines are weakening due to ongoing urbanization and modernization.

[Liberal Times] Political Parties and the Media
By Ronald Meinardus Irrespective of ideological leanings, all politicians are keen on getting into the media. Every time they receive coverage in an article, have their face on television or their voice on radio, they assume that they increase their standing among potential voters. Although democratic elections should be about political choices, in most countries they are basically a popularity contest. And mass popularity comes with media exposure. This reminds me of a joke from my early years as a radio journalist in Germany. Question: How do you find a politician in a crowded room? Answer: Hold a microphone up in the air and the politician will jump at you instantly. This anecdote illustrates the importance that media has gained among politicians in modern democracies. While studies dealing with political communication in specific countries presumably fill entire libraries, to my knowledge, very few comparative studies are available on the way politicians communicate with their target audiences across countries. In this light, a recent international workshop held in Manila on political communication for political parties in Asia was enlightening. Sponsored by the Council of Asian Liberal and Democrats, the sole pan-Asian umbrella organization for like-minded political parties, the conference brought together communications officers and campaign managers of political parties from seven Asian nations: Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines.

At present seven parties are represented in the Riksdag (the Swedish parliament). Members of the Riksdag who belong to the same party make up a parliamentary party group.
The party groups play an important and influential role in the work of the Riksdag and the political life of Sweden. They have secretariats of their own which work closely together with the other sections of the party organization. All important issues are discussed in the party groups before final decisions are reached in committees and in the Chamber. The Constitution contains no formal regulations prescribing how the party groups should work. The groups are mentioned only in connection with elections within the Riksdag and consultations with the Speaker. The work in the party groups is conducted according to the parties’ own rules and practices, but there are many organizational and procedural similarities between the different party groups. Historical background
As early as the 18th century, during the Age of Liberty (1718 –1772), two groups – the Hats and the Caps – emerged in the Riksdag of the Estates. To a certain extent, these groups functioned like modern parties and they came to play a major role in the political life of their age. They had supporters in all four Estates of the Riksdag and alternated as the ruling party in much the same way as parties do today.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition The term "political liberalism" can refer to any of several political traditions. Notable among these are " free market A free market (or free-trade ) economy is an idealized form of a market economy in which buyers and sellers are permitted to carry out transactions based on mutual agreement on price without government intervention in the form of taxes, subsidies, regulation, or government ownership of goods or services. The free market is considered the mainstay of ideologies such as minarchism and libertarianism and Western definitions of capitalism. It is anathema to communism and some variants of socialism, as defined in the West, although most variants of socialism seek to mitigate what they see as the problems of an unrestrained free market.

The term is also often used to characterize the politics of the Soviet Union and other one-party communist states, although many (perhaps most) on the political left (even including some who call themselves Marxist) would not consider their own politics to have anything significant in common with those of these states. Similarly, most anarchists consider themselves part of the political left, but many others on the left would reject that connection.

Political Parties and Electoral Systems in Lebanon and Israel: Interactive Reinforcement Hassan Krayem
American University of Beirut
The comparisons between Israel's and Lebanon's political party systems are interesting for various reasons. First of all, both systems are similar in that they are considered multiparty systems. This initial observation is, however, misleading because the two systems are genuinely different. In Israel, political parties have dominated the political process, and the smaller parties have had significant roles, including representation of various ethnic as well as national political views. In Lebanon, the role of political parties has been weak, specifically in the tendency for traditional and neotraditional forces to be emphasized while the role of political parties is being undermined by these forces. In Israel, the strong role of political parties was and is being reinforced by an electoral system which is based on proportional representation and one national electoral district, thus allowing for different parties, no matter how small they might be, to get some representation. In Lebanon, the weak role of political parties is being reinforced by a different electoral system, one that is based on simple majority and on small to medium electoral districts. The Lebanese Case: Table (1) shows the composition of the major parties in Lebanon today and their confessional, regional, parliamentary and ideological characteristics. The political life in Lebanon has never been organized around the role of political parties. The pre-Civil War era (1943-1975) was characterized by the inability of the state institutions, especially the parliament, to allow for greater party representation, especially of secular parties (see

A-Z of Liberal Party Policies An Introduction This is the Manifesto of the Liberal Party, not to be confused with the Liberal Democrats. We seek to build a Liberal society in which every citizen possesses liberty, property and security, with none enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. Our chief care is for the rights and opportunities of the individual and in all spheres we set freedom first. The policies detailed here reflect the fundamental Liberal belief in the equality of personal worth of every individual and a society which maximises the life chances of all, regardless of colour, creed, race, gender, sexual orientation, or where they live on the planet. Liberals proclaim that everyone should enjoy freedom of thought, of speech and of action, provided they do not impinge on the freedom of others, and that everyone should be equal before the law. We hope that, having read the manifesto, you will support us by voting Liberal, by becoming a member or by contributing to our campaign funds.
