Moratorium Urged on Tween Marketing
Tuesday, June 8, 2004
A public interest group fired off a public letter to the Federal Trade Commission (FCC) today, asking that it use its subpoena power to get access to marketer research studies to help determine if - heaven forefend - online data collection actually succeeds in helping (the evil) advertisers to reach kids and tweens. It also called on the ad industry to place a moratorium "on all interactive techniques that - in the absence of independent research suggesting otherwise - could potentially harm or negatively affect children and youth." While the letter is ludicrous on its face, it does show an interesting example of privacy concerns being twisted to suit older agendas, such as a general dislike of advertising, particularly to children.

Usually you might expect new political parties to be started by either a political junkie ( Mel Hurtig) or a policy wonk ( The 73-year-old Hellyer came out of retirement because "the Liberals are no longer Liberals. I never thought I would live to see the day. Paul Martin's father must be rolling in his grave. Three conservative parties in this country is two more than we need." The main plank of CAP's platform is a promise to beef up the Bank of Canada's role in the economy. Hellyer would have the Central Bank create $10 billion of new money, give 50 per cent to the provinces and use the rest for federal programs. "Right now," Hellyer says, "all new money in the economy is created by private banksand all that money is created as debt. Whoever manufactures the money has the power." If this platform sounds complicated, that's because it is. To help explain himself, Hellyer sank $270,000 of his own money to produce a comic book that explains what he's talking about. NDP has lead on Campbell's Liberals: Poll By DIRK MEISSNER
VICTORIA (CP) - British Columbia's New Democratic Party, relegated to just two seats in the May 2001 election, is within striking distance of forming a majority government if an election were held today, says a veteran political analyst. Poll results released Wednesday showed the NDP with 44 per cent support and a seven-point lead over Premier Gordon Campbell's Liberal government, which won 77 of 79 seats in 2001 and received almost 60 per cent of the popular vote. The results are the continuation of a downward trend for the Liberals, who have been slipping in the polls since September 2003 when they had 45 per cent support and the NDP was at 31 per cent, said a spokesman for Ipsos-Reid, the company that conducted the poll.

The Polarization of American Political Parties and Mistrust of Government David C. King Table Of Contents Introduction
One lesson that Democratic and Republican party leaders claim to have learned in the mid-1990s is that there are great political rewards for being "centrists." While extremists may be praised within wings of their own parties, they do less well in general elections and find it more difficult to build bipartisan coalitions in Congress and the White House. Following acrimony in the 104th Congress (1995-1997), President Clinton predictably called for a new era of bipartisanship. "Today," said the president in December 1996, "the clamor of political conflict has subsided. A new landscape is taking shape. The answer is clear: the center can hold, the center has held and the American peopleare demanding that it continue to do so." Republican leaders on Capitol Hill quickly agreed. Anthony Downs, the progenitor of median voter theories in economics and political science, could not have scripted a finer exchange.

Political parties provide the basis for Canadian government. Election choices are made simpler because Canadians can decide which candidate to vote for based on which party they wish to form the government. At this site you can connect to provincial parties and parties at work in federal politics
Political parties also structure most of work of the legislatures by organizing the members into disciplined blocs. As such, it is important to know what our political parties stand for, and how they are structured.

The debating chamber of the Finnish parliament Despite the many new contenders and the seemingly rapid swings of the political pendulum, continuity has been a dominant feature in the Finnish political party system. The main party 'lineages' have undergone surprisingly few changes since Finland gained its independence. Apart from constantly changing election themes, Finnish politics are characterised by continuity.

The Liberal Party grew out of the 18th and early 19th century Whig Party , which was augmented in the by "Peelite" defectors from the Tories and "Radicals" representing the new manufacturing interests. The term "Liberal Party" was first used officially in 1868, though it was used colloquially for decades before-hand. The establishment of the party as a national membership organisation came with the foundation of the National Liberal Federation in

Campbell-Bannerman died in 1908 and was succeeded by Herbert Henry Asquith In the years leading up to the outbreak of the First World War, the Liberals pushed through numerous pioneering social reforms, such as regulation of working hours, national insurance and welfare, as well as the reform of the

A Few Words about "The Extreme Right"
Once you accept that left and right are merely measures of economic position, the "extreme right" refers to extremely liberal economics that may be practised by social authoritarians or social libertarians. Similarly, the "extreme left" identifies a strong degree of state economic control, which may also be accompanied by liberal or authoritarian social policies. It's muddled thinking to simply describe the likes of the British National Party as "extreme right". The truth is that on issues like health, transport, housing, protectionism and globalisation, their economics are left of Labour , let alone the Conservatives. It's in areas like police power, military power, school discipline, law and order, race and nationalism that the BNP's real extremism - as authoritarians - is clear. This mirrors France's National Front. In running some local governments, they reinstated certain welfare measures which their Socialist predecessors had abandoned. Like similar authoritarian parties that have sprung up around Europe, they have come to be seen in some quarters as champions of the underdog, as long as the underdog isn't Black, Arab, gay or Jewish ! With mainstream Social Democratic parties adopting - reluctantly or enthusiastically - the new economic libertarian orthodoxy (neo-liberalism), much of their old economic baggage has been pinched by National Socialism. It's becoming the only sort of socialism on offer. Election debates between mainstream parties are increasingly about managerial competence rather than any clash of vision and economic direction.
