Political Parties
Liberal Party
By many of its characteristics, the Liberal Party is one of the most specific political parties in Macedonia. This is best illustrated by the party's development from its foundation until today; it went through several phases, following the pace of changes in and around the country, but consistently remaining on its basic course being a moving force of reformatory and democratic processes in Macedonia. In such an atmosphere, the party had, just like all other parties, many ups and downs. In any case, the Liberal Party, restlessly trying to build an image of a true democratic and progressive force, was etiquetted as "imported party", "faceless", "bureaucratic-managerial", "greedy for power", or a "party which is only an heir of a former political option of the already non-existing Yugoslavia." On the other hand, the Liberals themselves, ever since their emerging, are in a latent, but continuous conflict with every one around them, repeatedly pointing out their goals, ideas and projects are mined, their contribution is underestimated, or, simply, they are being unjustifiably neglected. Their recent especially increased rivalry with the coalition partner SDSM at times even presented threat to the survival of the govt itself. The Liberals even accused the media of being under strong influence of SDSM. Thus, a pretty much contradictory situation was created within the Liberal party itself on one hand, it considerably participated in the executive governing with the country, through 3 very significant govt bodies (foreign relations, economy and public health), and, on the other, the party was continually dissatisfied and critical towards the govt.

Have you stopped by the US Liberals @ About.com Discussion Forum lately? Here's a peek into a conversation about the Unborn Victims of Violence Act: From:  vero2244   Jun-7 2:18 pm  To:  Fallen_55   "Once again, the Unborn Victims of Violence Act punishes people for killing a woman's unborn child.  Democrats had tried to include an amendment that increases penalties for killing a pregnant womana pregnant WOMANbut Republicans ignored that and focused intensely on the fetus.  That should tell you what we have known all alongthat Republicans are using this law for their ultimate goalto outlaw a woman's right to choose.  And I will ask you this again: why did they have to use the word "unborn" in the law's title? To quote Abe Lincoln: You can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

Canadian Liberal Party
Federal Liberal Party members are actively recruiting prominent British Columbia New Democrats who are unhappy with recent NDP provincial governments and their effects on personal political futures to join federal Liberals to retain a majority and counter Alliance Leader Stockwell Day’s success at wooing Tory leaders to join his effort. B.C. federal Liberal election candidates who have served in B.C. NDP governments include former agriculture and tourism minister Bill Barlee and North Vancouver district councillor Bill Bell. Other NDPers who sought federal parliamentary nominations as Liberals include Burnaby councillor Lee Rankin, former B.C. Nurses Union president Cathy Ferguson (she lost), B.C. Government Employees Union member Bill Hartley, and Burnaby-Douglas candidate and Burnaby school board administrator Francesca Zumpano. Zumpano was named Italian-Canadian of the Year in 1996.
Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chretien accused Stockwell Day of wanting to destroy Canadian Medicare by creating a two-tier, partially privatized health care system. Chretien also insisted that a Liberal government will protect medicare and public health care against more conservative provinces (Alberta) that seem to favor more privatized health care. In response, Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day accused Liberals of engaging in “medi-scare” when the Alliance claims to guarantee some federal funding for health care and a commitment to a universal public care system. Day also said he would remove the federal government’s power granted through the Canada Health Act to enforce the act’s five principals, thereby indirectly giving provinces the right to administer and determine accessibility.

Canadian Alliance
Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day tried to explain away Alliance Party policies touted in Alliance candidate manuals saying an Alliance government would hold referenda on abortion and capital punishment or other controversial issues if it appeared that 3% of the public wanted them. The party platform suggests the government would consult the public on what the required percent would be to call a referendum. For the last few days Day has been denying publicly that any number was ever agreed upon and that 3% was just a figure thrown out for discussion. Previously Day has taken strong positions on both of these issues. Unable to answer the discrepancy convincingly, Day tried to turn attention to attacking Prime Minister Jean Chretien and Liberals by talking about a 1997 ethics report suggesting Liberals awarded jobs grants to friends with political influence. Earlier this morning Day attacked Chretien for “flip-flops” on various issues including tax cuts and for Liberal support of a UN Security Council resolution criticizing Israel’s use of force against Palestinian rioters. Responding to suggestions that he has abandoned his “Agenda of Respect” for an agenda of attack, Day said, “…this is not a personal attack, this is reality.”

Canadian political parties fight over remedy for public health system Clifford Krauss NYT
Monday, May 17, 2004 TORONTO Canada's publicly financed health insurance system has already emerged as the dominant issue of the imminent national election campaign as the major political parties jostle at the starting gate. With the population aging, waiting lines for care growing, and doctors and nurses becoming sparse, especially in rural areas, opinion polls indicate that satisfaction with medical services has declined in the last decade. But a majority of Canadians still view their universal coverage system with pride - seeing it as a national resource that distinguishes Canada from the United States, where tens of millions go uninsured.
"There's no other issue of such vital and visceral significance to Canadians," said Prime Minister Paul Martin, who has been in office since Jean Chrétien stepped down in December and is looking for his own mandate, while touring the country this month. He has promised to "provide a fix" that will last for a generation.

Mustafa Bakri Dismissed by political analysts as a party with contradictory policies and no coherent ideology, the Liberal Party, led by Mustafa Kamel Murad, came into existence in 1976 on the authority of a decree from then President Anwar El-Sadat. With little, if any, grassroots support, Sadat envisaged the party as what could best be described as a loyalist opposition group. Murad did not disappoint Sadat. Supporting his peace overtures to Israel, Murad accompanied Sadat on his 1977 trip to Jerusalem. He also backed his economic open door policy. The Liberals first appeared on the political scene in 1975 as the "right wing" or forum of the Arab Socialist Union (ASU), then the nation' sole political party. When Sadat ordered the dissolution of the ASU and a switch to the multi-party system the following year, the Liberals became a fully-fledged political party along with the two other wings of the ASU, the leftist Tagammu and the Arab Socialist Misr Party. The Liberals managed to win 23 parliamentary seats in the first multi-party elections held in the same year, earning Murad the title of opposition leader. But in 1978, the party relinquished its opposition role and forged a coalition with the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP). As a result, its presence in parliament was reduced to three seats in the 1979 elections. The coalition had to be dissolved.

Last updated: Sunday, January 23, 2000. The cannabis policies of the UK political parties UKCIA recommend that you only vote for Parties and MPs who support reform of the cannabis laws. Why not e-mail your MP , tell them you want cannabis legal and find out what their view's are. There is only one party at present that supports the full legalisation and regulation of cannabis: The Legalise Cannabis Alliance , who aim to be an umbrella for candidates wishing to stand on a pro cannabis ticket. Please notify us if you know the policies of any other parties. We're also interested in the views of local branches, and youth and student groups.
    Conservatives
Publicly the Tories remain opposed to legalisation because "it would send the wrong signals" to the young, and because "all right-thinking people are against it". They increased the maximum fines for possession of cannabis in the Criminal Justice Act. Privately there seems to have been a softening of their approach, with harm-reduction now the education policy. They have allowed police forces to caution a large amount of possession cases, if they want. Some of the libertarian right-wing support legalisation to save the state money, and allow personal freedom. The previous (1997) conservative government's case against the legalisation of any drugs (they never refer to the option of decriminalisation because they know that UN conventions presently make legalisation impossible) was laid out in a speech by the Home Secretary to the Association of Chief Police Officers on 1994. Their views on the health risks posed by cannabis have similarly been recently stated by the Department of Health. The UKCIA has obtained copies of both of these documents and you can now

They, and hundreds of thousands more British Columbians are represented in the Legislature by our Party Leader and Premier of British Columbia, Gordon Campbell, and 76 other hard-working BC Liberal MLAs. On September 11, 1993, Gordon Campbell was elected Leader of the BC Liberals. Since then, under Campbell's leadership, BC Liberal Party membership has grown from 16,000 to over 100,000. We are BC's largest political party.
The BC Liberals are a diverse team that is united under a common banner
In 1997, Richard Neufeld, the MLA for Peace River – North, who was elected as a Reform BC candidate, joined the BC Liberal caucus. In June of 2000, Jack Weisgerber, the MLA for Peace River – South, who was Reform BC Leader during the last election, officially endorsed Gordon Campbell as BC’s next Premier.
