by Evelyn Boswell BOZEMAN York’s existence at other times was marred by beatings and a master who refused to let the slave live with his wife. York knew from childhood what it was like to be the personal property of another. Clark referred to him as "My boy" even when York was in his 30s. "The best and the worst of a slave’s life constituted York’s personal world," Philip Morgan told a packed hall during his lecture on "York’s World: Slavery and the Lewis and Clark Expedition." Morgan is a professor at the College of William and Mary, editor of the William and Mary Quarterly and an expert in early American slavery. He was the first speaker in a series of free lectures on "The World of Lewis and Clark: Montana, the West and America in the Late 18th and Early 19th Century." The other lectures will be given at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 23 and March 4 at the Museum of the Rockies. York was born in Caroline County in the early 1770s. He lived near the York River, and his early life was probably typical of the other 200,000 slaves in Virginia at the time, Morgan said. That would have meant that he, as a child, ran "essentially naked and barefoot most of the year." His diet would have been high in starch and low in protein. He undoubtedly lived in a drafty, dark cabin surrounded by a dirt yard.

Lewis and Clark Expedition
By the end of the eighteenth century the United States was starting to expand in a westward direction. In 1803, the United States took a giant step westward when she bought, from France, a vast area of land west of the Mississippi. This was the Louisiana Purchase, which moved the westward boundary of the country approximately to the present eastern border of the state of Idaho. President Jefferson, long interested in the territory that lay beyond the Mississippi River, selected his personal secretary, Meriwether Lewis (1774-1809), to head up an expedition. Lewis chose his friend William Clark (1770-1838) to share the leadership with him. Both Lewis and Clark were relatively young for such an important assignment. Clark was twenty-nine and Lewis was thirty-three when the party left St. Louis on May 14, 1804. The first two months of the journey it rained often. One day would be hot and humid, and the next cold and windy. Sudden rain squalls would turn the Missiouri into a furious, roaring river that tossed their boats against riverbanks and onto sand bars. To add to the misery, they were constantly under attack by snakes, ticks, and mosquitos. Despite it all, they had arrived near the present site of Omaha, Nebraska by the end of July. Near the end of October the expedition reached the land of the Mandans, and prepared to winter over near the present city of Mandan, North Dakota. Here they built a few rooms for living and a couple of large store-rooms, all enclosed by an 18-foot stockade. The winter of 1804-1805 was spent preparing gear and equipment for the spring departure.

LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION
Early in 1803, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, both experienced soldiers, to explore what is now the northwestern United States. He requested detailed observations about natural resources and transcontinental routes, also instructing the leaders to contact Indian tribes. The Louisiana Purchase soon gave the expedition new urgency; almost nothing was known about the vast addition of land west of the Mississippi River. In May 1804, Lewis and Clark's party of nearly fifty men set out from St. Louis. They headed up the Missouri River and at the onset of winter reached the site of present-day Bismarck, North Dakota, where they constructed a fort. At this time Sacagawea, a Shoshone woman, joined the expedition as a guide and translator. In 1805, the group followed the Missouri westward to its headwaters and then crossed the Rocky Mountains and proceeded along the Salmon, Snake, and Columbia rivers to the Pacific Ocean. On their return in 1806, Clark and Lewis separated and found two more passes over the Rockies. Once reunited, they continued down the Missouri to St. Louis, arriving with abundant painstaking notes and drawings of the geography of the region and the wildlife and inhabitants they had encountered. St. Joseph, Missouri boasts a past sprinkled with fur traders, Native Americans, pioneers, prosperous merchants, outlaws and, of course, the legend of the Pony Express. Lewis and Clark and the men of the Corps of Discovery reached today's Buchanan County on July 4, 1804. During the afternoon they passed the mouth of a small bayou which led to a lake. Clark wrote in his journals, "The great quantity of those fowl in this Lake induced me to Call it the Gosling Lake." Today visitors can camp at this lake which is now known as Lewis and Clark Lake. That evening the Corps camped across the Missouri River from southern Buchanan County. They fired their bow piece in celebration of the birth of the country. The next four days they spent traveling through a serpentine section of the river in weather that was almost unbearably hot. One man became "verry sick, Struck with the Sun..." Since one of the objectives of the exploration was to observe the natural surroundings, Lewis and Clark noted these in their journals. The whip-poor-will, eastern wood rat, coyotes, numerous deer, and various fish as well as pawpaw, locust, and sycamore trees are just some of what they noted in Buchanan County. The Corps carried maps with them made by early explorers. St. Michael's Prairie was noted on their maps since it was well-known to early river travelers. Today, St. Joseph sits on St. Michael's Prairie.

Paul Bunyon
A legendary folklore hero of the lumber camps of the American Northwest, with enormous strength and cunning. The stories have Paul Bunyon and his giant blue ox, called Babe, creating the most significant or even the North American continent such as the Grand Canyon. There are many theories to explain the origin of the tales, including:
  • From French-Canadian sources.
  • From European sources.
  • Created by a logging company early in the twentieth century.
The earliest known publication of some Paul Bunyon tales was in a newspaper in 1910. There is a suitably huge statue of Paul Bunyon and Babe in the redwood forests of northern California, I think possibly alongside the Avenue of the Giants
