Flintlock Rifle Debate
It has long been believed that the Armory at Harpers Ferry manufactured at least 15 of the .54 caliber U.S. Model 1803 flintlock rifles, or their prototypes, especially for Meriwether Lewis and the Corps of Discovery. However, some recent evidence questions this assumption. A very well researched article by Frank Tait proposes that the Harpers Ferry armory did not create whole rifles until well after Meriwether Lewis had left the vicinity. In Lewis' earlier army career, he had served under General Anthony Wayne. Wayne's corps of riflemen used rifles created as the result of a special contract of 1792. Almost 3,500 of these rifles, of .45 to .47 caliber, were created in two procurements of 1792 and 1794 . There were hundreds of these rifles stored at the Schulykill Arsenal in Philadelphia in 1803. Tait proposes that Lewis would have picked 15 of the best of these and had the Harpers Ferry armory "tune" them.
It does seem likely that the Corps of Discovery did not carry the U.S. Model 1803 as we now know it, but opinions disagree. Some believe that Meriwether Lewis acquired a prototype or precursor of the U.S. Model 1803 (see

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are best known for their expedition from the Mississippi River to the West Coast and back. The expedition, called the Corps of Discovery, was President Thomas Jefferson's visionary project to explore the American West. It began in May of 1804 and ended in September 1806. Before the expedition, Lewis was Jefferson's private presidential secretary. He also served in the military, where he met Clark. After the expedition, Lewis served a short term as Governor of the Territory of Upper Louisiana before he died. Clark lived for many years and held various government positions, including Superintendent of Indian Affairs and Governor of the Missouri Territory.

Lewis and Clark: Corps of Discovery
The Lewis and Clark expedition was the first federally funded scientific expedition in the United States. Between May 1804 and September 1806, the explorers mapped the terrain; collected plants, animals and soil samples; and met many Indian tribes. Their discoveries set the stage for the growth of the country to what it is today. This month, the MarcoGram features activities to engage students in capturing the spirit of this famous expedition. Use the warm-up activities below, then scroll down for links to more lessons and resources suitable for use with students in any grade level or subject area. The MarcoGram is created in HTML. In this lesson, students will be pitted against each other for the best "land" and "resources" in the classroom as a way to introduce issues involved in vying for land. They will learn about the mission of the expedition and why the expedition was so important to Thomas Jefferson, then cap off the lesson by writing a mission statement. T he Lewis and Clark Expedition was organized for the express purpose of exploring the new lands acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. Although this territory extended only to the limits of the area drained by the Missouri River, the expedition decided to explore all the way to the Pacific Ocean in order to gather further scientific knowledge, a particular interest of President Jefferson. S etting out from St Louis MO on May 14, 1804, the expedition started up the Missouri with a party of about 40 men and one large Newfoundland dog. After exploring the Platte River, they continued to Fort Mandan in present day North Dakota, where they wintered. After the breakup of winter ice on the Missouri, the party continued upriver and reach the mouth of the Yellowstone River just east of the present state line on April 26, 1805. E xploration of the Yellowstone would wait for the return trip. Lewis and Clark headed west along the Missouri into Montana. From the Yellowstone to the Musselshell River, they encountered no natives, but a great deal of wildlife. The area along the river where the expedition actually passed is now largely submerged beneath the Fort Peck Reservoir. Much of their path is now within the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. [
