Statues, Buffalo and People...OH MY! Honoring Our Veterans—Past and Present by Erin Fitgerald Administrative Intern
I recently had the humbling experience of visiting the D-Day Memorial museum in Caen, France and the nearby American cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach. My visit, right before Memorial Day and the 60th anniversary of the Normandy Invasions, provoked feelings of sadness for the great loss of human life, gratitude for the freedom those sacrifices won, and pride for what our nation and other allies did in the name of humanity. and hang in great quantities on the bushes I Saw great numbers of Deer in the Praries...our party in high Spirits. [Camped about five miles above Chariton River, Saline County, Missouri.]

Introduction
This annotated enumerative bibliography dealing with the Lewis and Clark expedition is primarily aimed at material about the expedition rather than at primary material from the expedition. However, in reading about the expedition a reader will undoubtedly come across references to the various publications of the primary sources. Therefore, these sources are provided and annotated to give the reader the basic background information necessary to read intelligently. This bibliography is not aimed at the Lewis and Clark expert but rather at the student or person with little or some knowledge about the expedition. Students may find it useful in writing papers. Also, librarians doing collection development may find it helpful in selecting monographs. With the bi-centenial of the setting-out of the expedition coming up in seven years there is likely to be more reader demand for Lewis and Clark materials. In any case, there is a wide range of material to choose from something for the absolute Lewis and Clark novice as well as for the person who has already read a few Lewis and Clark books or articles.

The Pacific County Friends of Lewis and Clark is a nonprofit organization devoted to commemorating the bicentennial of the epic journey of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery, with special emphasis on the 18 days they spent in Pacific County, Washington. We want to help students and teachers of all ages find out as much as possible about this exciting time in history and to invite travelers following in Lewis and Clark's footsteps to visit our county and enjoy the "Full view of the ocean", and many other historic sites that are still as natural as the day they were written about in the Lewis and Clark journals. William Clark drew this map to precisely mark the campsite at the end of the Corps' westward expedition. As you examine this map, you will see dotted lines. These lines mark precise bearings taken with a sextant. You can pinpoint Station Camp and the Chinook village of 36 houses by following the lines to the center of the map. For a larger view, along with interpretive text, click here Contemporary maps of the area can be seen on the Long Beach Peninsula Visitors Bureau website.

"To Meriwether Lewis, esquire, captain of the first regiment of infantry of the United States of America:
"Your situation as secratary of the president of the United States, has made you aquainted with the objects of my confidential message of January 18, 1803, to the legislature; you have seen the act they passed, which, though expressed in general terms, was meant to sanction those objects, and you are appointed to carry them to execution.
"Instruments for ascertaining, by celestial observations, the geography of the country through which you will pass, have already been provided. Light articles for barter and presents among the Indians, arms for your attendants, say from ten to twelve men, boats, tents, and other traveling apparatus, with ammunition, medicine, surgical instruments and provisions, you will will have prepared, with such aids as the secretary at war can yield in his department; and from him also you will receive authority to engage among our troops, by voluntary agreement, the attendants abovementioned; over whom you, as thier commanding officer, are invested with all the powers the laws give in such a case.
"As you movements, while within the limits of the United States, will be better directed by occasional communications, adapted to circumstances as they arise, they will not be noticed here. What follows will respect your proceedings after your departure form the United States.

    Lead the way!
fter Congress approved Jefferson's plan to explore the newly purchased Louisiana Territory in February of 1803, he appointed his secretary Meriwether Lewis to lead the new exploring party, known as the "Corps of Discovery." In a journey begun with commercial and political ambitions, as well as scientific discovery, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark became the first Americans to chart the vastness of the West, see the Rocky Mountains and reach the Pacific by land. In the careful journals that they were duty-bound to keep during the journey, they not only conveyed a sense of awe, they explained critical decisions such as how they chose members of the expedition, negotiated forks in the path and picked a winter camp.

WASHINGTON Satellites are taking sharp-eyed snapshots of a trail traveled nearly 200 years ago that opened up vast expanses of the unexplored American frontier to the fledging United States. The heroic expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark from 1804-1806 took the team across approximately miles 3,700 (6,000 kilometers) of uncharted wilderness. Now, satellite imagery is mapping their pathway to help reveal the contrasting ecological, environmental and cultural changes that have occurred over the past two centuries. Teaching tools A NASA-funded Earth Observing System Education Project is underway at the University of Montana in Missoula. The campus is the site of a National Lewis and Clark Education Center (NLCEC). At the heart of the enterprise is the latest in remote sensing gear, coupled with interactive and multi-media software, along with high-tech computing hardware. The Center is embracing students and educators in the study of the Lewis and Clark expedition as an interdisciplinary voyage for today, one that views the historic trail as a teaching tool to determine cultural and ecological change.
