The Lewis and Clark Expedition and the USGS
Exploration Recruitment Preparation D The Lewis and Clark Expedition was the first of many government surveys of natural resources in the American West. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was established on March 3, 1879 in response to a report from the National Academy of Sciences, which had been asked by the Congress in 1878 to provide a plan for surveying and mapping the Territories of the United States that would secure the best possible results at the least possible cost. The USGS continues to serve the nation as an independent fact-finding agency that provides scientific understanding about natural-resource conditions, issues, and problems. Because of its origin in natural resource surveys and the similarity of the USGS mission to Thomas Jefferson's charge to Meriwether Lewis , the USGS can be seen as the organizational successor to Lewis and Clark. The Topic:
Lewis and Clark Expedition Easier - The Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-1806) sought an overland route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Harder - In February 1803 at the urging of then President Thomas Jefferson, Congress approved spending $25,000 (Final cost was $38,727) for a small U.S. Army expedition. Their assignment was to ascend the Missouri River to its source, cross the continental divide, and follow the Columbia River to its mouth at the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson chose 28-year-old Meriwether Lewis as leader for the group he called the Corps of Discovery. Lewis selected a former army comrade, 32-year-old William Clark to be his co-leader. The expedition began May 14, 1804, as the group left Camp Wood River (Illinois). The expedition returned to St. Louis on September 23, 1806.

Historic Montana Publishing
Historic Montana Publishing is a small-scale, regional publisher of Montana History, History of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, Idaho History, Native American History, Revisionist Montana History, especially in regard to the Montana Vigilantes, and Historical Calendars. Touch of Light Publishing is HMP's poetry division. THE MONTANA BOOK OF DAYS 365 Days ~ 365 Stories The Short Course in Montana History by Jeffrey J. Smith Many Montana stories have been elevated to the status of myth: black hats vs. white hats, good vs. evil, reluctant male heroes asserting themselves against all odds, etc. They make good movies and comic books, but it's time to reexamine these stories of vigilantes and cavalrymen, Copper Kings and cowboys, buffalo exterminators old and new. Each day of the year tells a story that occurred on that day. The Montana Book of Days tells the unexpected twists of the old stories. It tells stories you may not have heard. And it tells the stories of citizens overlooked.

http://www.lewisclark.net/
In May, 1804, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out on an amazing expedition across the Louisiana Territory. It has been nearly 200 years since then, and the bicentennial of their historic journey is rapidly approaching. These true American heroes faced unknown people, harsh conditions and unexplored lands to secure a place in history as two of the world's greatest explorers. One of the expedition's stops along the way was near present-day Yankton, South Dakota, and the Yankton Area Chamber of Commerce along with the Yankton Daily Press and Dakotan has put together this site to celebrate Yankton's place in history as well as sites along the rest of the Lewis and Clark Trail. Nearly 200 years ago, Meriwether Lewis, William Clark and their 'Corps of Discovery' departed on an epic journey across the interior of the United States seeking a water passage to the Pacific Ocean. Meriwether Lewis William Clark
Inspired by "Undaunted Courage", two modern day explorers are retracing the trail of the original expedition by bicycle.
Rex Garrelts (Capt. Lew) Mark Viets (Capt. Bill)
Rex (Captain Lew) and Mark (Captain Bill) by day an engineer and architect respectively, are the self appointed captains. Possessing none of the conveniences of the original expedition (water craft, sextant, rifles, blue beads), the captains have made do with mapping software, touring bicycles, water bottles, and raw guts. We have decided that the only way to traverse the entire 4,000 mile Trail (short of quitting our jobs or calling in sick for a long time) is through a series of short (3-5 day) "Trips". The logistics are manageable within 300 miles of our Kansas City home base, but will become much more complex beyond that. We hope you will enjoy traveling with us. We would like to hear from you, and if you're so inclined, join us for the ride.

The Lewis and Clark Expedition Background In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson guided a splendid piece of foreign diplomacy through the U.S. Senate: the purchase of Louisiana territory from France. After the Louisiana Purchase Treaty was made, Jefferson initiated an exploration of the newly purchased land and the territory beyond the "great rock mountains" in the West.
