What Is a Gynecologic Oncologist? Oncology Team ABOUT US Healthcommunities.com Pressroom Testimonials Overview Leukemia is a form of cancer that begins in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow - soft, inner part of the bones. Leukemia - which literally means "white blood" in Greek - occurs when there is an excess of abnormal white blood cells in the blood. Known as leukocytes, these cells are so plentiful in some individuals that the blood actually has a whitish tinge. Under normal circumstances, the blood-forming, or hematopoietic, cells of the bone marrow make leukocytes to defend the body against infectious organisms such as viruses and bacteria. But if some leukocytes are damaged and remain in an immature form, they become poor infection fighters that multiply excessively and do not die off as they should. The leukemic cells accumulate and lessen the production of oxygen-carrying red blood cells (eythrocytes), blood-clotting cells (platelets), and normal leukocytes. If untreated, the surplus leukemic cells overwhelm the bone marrow, enter the bloodstream, and eventually invade other parts of the body, such as the lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and central nervous system (brain, spinal cord). In this way, the behavior of leukemia is different than that of other cancers, which usually begin in major organs and ultimately spread to the bone marrow.

Wednesday June 4, 2003 was a sad day for the Foundation, for the thousands of members of the ACOR CLL list and for her family and friends. Grannybarb ceased to be with us to provide her support and to share her knowledge, as she had always done with everyone who was going through the anguish of a recent diagnosis of CLL, or who was facing one of the many difficult decisions along the road in dealing with this illness. The dragon, as she called it, finally won the battle and took her from this world. We will all miss her loving advice, care for others and generosity. Barbara was a founding director of The CLL Foundation and served since its inception four years ago. Our condolences go to her family for their loss.

Researchers: Pill has potential to destroy leukemia
The drug, STI-571, specifically targets an enzyme found only in leukemia cells NEW ORLEANS (CNN) An experimental cancer pill designed to combat chronic myelogenous leukemia, a common form of the adult cancer, has produced dramatic results in clinical trials and may have the potential to destroy most cancers, researchers reported Friday. The findings are being presented in New Orleans, at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology. In a study of 37 patients treated with the drug, code-named STI-571, all of them had complete normalization of their blood counts, signaling a remission of their leukemia.

Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) FeLV, a retrovirus, is the most important infectious disease agent producing fatal illness in domestic cats today. How is FeLV spread from cat to cat? The feline leukemia virus is excreted in saliva and tears and possibly the urine and feces of infected cats. Prolonged, extensive cat-to-cat contact is required for efficient spread, because the virus is rapidly inactivated by warmth and drying. How long can a cat survive with FeLV disease? A cat with FeLV disease may live for several weeks to several months, depending on how advanced the disease is at the time of diagnosis. However, it is impossible to tell how long any particular cat will survive. Can a cat become immune to FeLV? A significant percentage of adult cats that are exposed to the virus develop immunity and do not become persistently viremic (i.e., will not carry the virus indefinitely in the blood and bone marrow). Usually those cats live out a normal life span. However, in some the virus may remain sequestered for a variable period of time somewhere in the body. It is thus conceivable that FeLV might break out and cause disease at a later date, after the cats have been stressed, or perhaps medicated with drugs that suppress the immune system. Can my children or I become infected with FeLV if our cat is infected? What about our dog?

Childhood leukemia - genetic mistake and unknown trigger
By LONDON, England (Reuters) Childhood leukemia is caused by a genetic abnormality that is present in one percent of healthy babies and a second unknown trigger that occurs some time after birth, British scientists said Monday. The genetic mistake is crucial but not sufficient on its own to cause the malignant blood disease.

Aims and Scope: Leukemia and Lymphoma
is an international journal that brings together clinical and laboratory data on lymphomas, leukemias and allied disorders including myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes. Leukemia and Lymphoma publishes full-length papers, communications and reviews on clinical and therapeutic practice, laboratory diagnosis, pathology, cytology, ultrastructure, cytogenetics and cellular and molecular immunology; the journal aims at a strong clinical-pathologic correlation. Interesting or unusual case reports of importance are also included. In addition, an update is provided on the basic issues and advances in molecular genetics as applied to this field. The journal will provide an important reference source for physicians and scientists who deal essentially with the clinical and laboratory diagnosis, clinical care and therapy of patients with these disorders.
