23. Cancer - Dietary Bioflavonoids May Contribute To Infant Leukemia
that the occurrence of MLL abnormalities in adult de novo leukemia is quite low and that no epidemiologic data support an important role of diet in adult AML

Dietary Bioflavonoids May Contribute To Infant Leukemia
Several common dietary bioflavonoids induce cleavage in vitro in the MLL gene, researchers report in the electronic pages of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The authors suggest that maternal ingestion of bioflavonoids may induce infant and even adult leukemias by this mechanism. Dr. Reiner Strick and colleagues, of the University of Chicago in Illinois, cultured human hematopoietic cells for 6 or 16 hours with 20 different bioflavonoids. These included six flavones, five flavonols, four flavonones, one flavanol, four isoflavones, the dietary supplement "quercetin-complex," and the chemotherapeutic agents etoposide and doxorubicin. Dr. Strick's team found that 10 of the bioflavonoids induced cleavage in one site of the MLL, which co-localized with the cleavage site induced by etoposide and doxorubicin. The natural flavonols quercetin and fisetin, and the quercetin-complex, induced the same level of cleavage as etoposide did. The researchers next found that some of the bioflavonoids, including quercetin, myricetin and fisetin, inhibited human topoisomerase II

Risks for, and Causes of, Leukemia It's only human to wonder what causes disease. After a diagnosis, you may ask, "How in the world could this have happened? What caused me to get leukemia?" Nobody knows. There are many theories and ideas being promulgated about what causes leukemia, but there are no hard and fast answers out there that we can point to and say, "This is what caused the leukemia." Who is at risk for leukemia In 1993 about 10 Americans per 100,000 were newly diagnosed with leukemia. It is heartening that incidence rates of all leukemias dropped by 5.3 percent from 1973 to 1993. This drop was seen across genders and ethnic groups. Similarly, mortality rates dropped 6.2 percent during the same period. More effective methods for diagnosis and a much wider variety of treatment options have made this possible. Better understanding of possible causes and areas of concern also affected the statistics. Although percentages have dropped, as the population has grown the number of people affected has risen slightly in the past few years. In 1999, an estimated 27,900 adults were diagnosed with leukemia. That's up from 23,100 in 1995, when 16,800 males and 13,400 females were diagnosed. According to 1999 statistics, AML has become the largest adult leukemia type, overtaking chronic lymphocytic leukemia in the numbers by about 2,300 individuals. More common use of blood tests has made early detection of these diseases easier and more efficient. To put the numbers in some perspective, in 1999 in the United States of America alone, about 1,221,800 new cases of all kinds of cancer are expected to be diagnosed, yet graphs of new leukemia diagnoses have remained pretty flat for the last five to eight years.

Leukemia Gardening and Golf
Entries are few recently because golf season has arrived and so also has the season for gardening. So, you might ask, what has gardening and golf got to do with leukemia? Golf has nothing to do with leukemia but I'll be spending a lot of time on the golf course in spite of dragging around some extra white blood (leukemia) cells. Gardening has a lot to do with leukemia or any other type of cancer. My research informs me that my immune system is lacking some necessary cancer fighting properties in the form of trace elements and organic compounds. I am starting some organic vegetable gardening because I believe that the majority of vegetables we buy at the market are grown in soil that is depleted in trace elements. That is because farmers fertilize with chemicals and the soil is deficient in some of the trace elements. By adding compost and manure to the soil the earth is reenergized and the crops grown in that soil will be able to supply my immune system with the necessary cancer fighting properties when I consume those crops.

Dr. Budwig's Diet
Dr. Budwig’s Diet
I have a long-held belief that disease is a result of poor nutrition. I believe that our immune system can handle any disease if it is provided with the proper nutrients. Those nutrients enable it to do the job for which it is designed. The Dr. Budwig Diet is a very rich source of Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids . Essential Fatty Acids can not be made by the body. They must obtained from our diet. This information reminds me of my childhood when Mom (ninety years young) would administer the cod liver oil. Oh, how I hated that cod liver oil. It tasted so horrible it had to be great health food. I surfed into this site today when searching for cancer treatments and was amazed at the testimonial pages. The site is loaded with anecdotal stories of people who overcame cancer using this flax oil and cottage cheese diet. What a great service to mankind the Beckwith family is performing! Since I have been on the Dr. Budwig diet since February 22, I think it appropriate to outline my version of this diet.

31. Cancer - Ask The Dietitian
It is true that diet plays a big role in most cancers as does heredity. However, with leukemia, diet has not been shown to be a factor.

Cancer
My father has pancreatic cancer and someone sent me an e-mail saying that vitamin B 17 is the cure for cancer, but that the FDA has banned this . Do you know anything about this? Would you please help me? Or try to send me in the right direction? Thank you in advance for anything you might be able to offer.
There is no such vitamin B 17. Unfortunately the FDA does not regulate supplement companies and they can still make wild, outlandish health statements. Recently, legislation was pending to prevent this, but thanks to deep pocketed supplement company lobbyists, the legislation was greatly weakened. Often, I don't even recognize the ingredients on labels of supplements as being a nutrient for which there is a substantiated need for by humans. I would encourage your dad talk to a Registered Dietitian who can review his chart and make specific recommendations for pancreatic cancer. Generally, persons with pancreatic cancer need to limit fat and moderate protein as your pancreas makes enzymes that are used in the digestion of these nutrients. It is very important that your dad snack frequently to maintain his weight especially if he is having radiation or chemotherapy.

Widespread Infection with Leukemia Virus from Meat and Milk O ne little Holstein dairy cow from a Yakima, Washington farm introduced mad cow into America’s food supply and changed the world forever. Can you imagine the response when consumers discover 9 out of 10 of the herds in the US (89%) are infected with leukemia virus? This means millions of cows presently have live, infectious, leukemia viruses – bovine leukemia virus – living inside them. These viruses are known to cause cancers of the immune system, called leukemias and lymphomas, in these cows. More startling will be the reaction when they learn that consuming tainted beef has already infected as many as 74% of people living in the US. Hopefully, this will be a wake-up call that turns people from sausages to sweet potatoes and porterhouse to potatoes. A revolution is long overdue, especially since scientists have known about this health hazard for more than 35 years. Yet, you have heard little or nothing about leukemia viruses infecting your food supply because of the spin placed on this information by the cattle industry and the United States Department of Agriculture. They have taken the position: “until proven guilty beyond any doubt, eating live leukemia viruses is perfectly safe.” C

To Learn More About This Topic: Chat with Us Email Us According to the National Cancer Institute, about one-third of all cancer deaths are related to malnutrition. For cancer patients, optimal nutrition is important. Cancer can deplete your body's nutrients and cause weight loss. Cancer and cancer treatment can also have a negative effect on your appetite, and your body's ability to digest foods. These factors may leave you in a vulnerable condition - high nutrient need, and low nutrient intake. At Cancer Treatment Centers of America, we believe that nutrition plays an important role in the treatment of cancer. That's why each patient who comes to us for help receives a nutrition assessment and an individualized plan designed to prevent malnutrition, reduce side effects and enhance his or her overall well being. Our Mission The CTCA nutrition program provides quality care for you through assessment, education, supplementation and support. This mission is achieved through the assessment of your risk for malnutrition, and the implementation of an individualized nutrition plan.

DRINKING VIRUS-INFECTED BOVINE BODY FLUIDS
I thought that I was beyond being shocked about the extent of sickness on America's dairy farms. Today's column contains a most disgusting revelation, guaranteed to make you choke and gag on your next slurp of ice cream.
The current issue of Hoard's Dairyman, (Volume 147, number 4), the self proclaimed "National Dairy Farm Magazine," contains information that surprised even me. Ads are supposed to promote products, and I suppose this one does. It advertises a test for one very serious cow disease. This ad most certainly does not promote the dairy industry's objective of trying to convince you that their product is wholesome.
