Energy Efficiency in Schools
Multidisciplinary, Hands-On Educational Opportunities
Energy efficiency offers innumerable opportunities for students to do hands-on activities. In some schools these activities have led to substantial energy cost savings for the building, which can be returned to the classroom for instructional supplies. Through the following programs, the Alliance is working to make schools more energy efficient: Schools spend more on energy than on computers and textbooks combined. Reducing energy use is an effective way to help cash-strapped schools funnel more money into the classroom instead of the local utility. Just as important, the concept of energy efficiency provides multidisciplinary learning opportunities in:
  • Mathematics to compute energy and monetary savings, and pollution emissions Science to evaluate what makes one refrigerator more efficient than another, or to study the environmental effects of burning fossil fuels Language arts to read and analyze different approaches to energy policy Computer skills to plot data into graphs.
