Music: Shostakovich: Complete Symphonies - I currently own 5 versions of the 14th symphony (Kondrashin, Bernstein, Barshai (a relay of the preimiere in Moscow), Haitink, and another Rostropovich version on the Russian Revelation label. The Bernstein is saggy and contrived, the Haitink fails to excite, the earlier Rostropovich is in terrible audio, The Kondrashin is excellent and full of white heat, and the Barshai is even more hair raising. And where does this version of the 14th belong? Among the very best. This perfomance's soloists were the original soloists Shostakovich intended (Vishnevskaya and Rhestin). The orchestra though different from the primiere is still excellent. When listening to the Haitink, the orchestra plays with emotional reservation. Not the case here
Music: Best Opera Album In The World - In addition to the great male tenors, Maria Callas, Victoria de los Angeles, Renata Scotto, Helga Dernesch, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Elizabeth Schwarzkopf, Mirella Freni, Madi Mespli, and others sing the great arias. This double CD will make you cry, it is so beautiful, and this from someone who never paid much attention to opera. I listen to it only about once a week, so I won't get tired of it, and after several months it still grabs my by the throat and makes tears run down my face. In 40 years of listening to rock and pop, I have never experienced this before. Buy it!

    Portrait of Lesotho
Lesotho came into being when the first King - Moshoeshoe I - from 1822 gathered a number of clans, which were threatened by the Zulus from the east and Boers from the west. It was a heavy battle and Moshoeshoe had to ask for British protection in 1868. Lesotho became a British protectorate but not before it had lost half of its agricultural land to the Boers. Moreover, it was just the beginning of many problems, which the small mountainous country would have with its large neighbour that completely encircles Lesotho. The reason was that in 1866 a young South African found a small shiny stone on the bank of Orange River in the desert-like western South Africa. It turned out to a diamond and was the beginning of the biggest diamond adventure the world has experienced.

Police co-operation in Africa Interpol high representative visit in Africa 2003 History of the membership Fact sheet: Africa Sub-Directorate Countries of the four sub-regions of Africa south of Sahara Nairobi Sub-Regional Bureau
History of the membership The continent's position as a crossroads between the Americas, Europe and Asia also lays it open to transnational crimes such as traffic in weapons, illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, traffic in stolen motor vehicles and fraud, which can only be stopped by international co-operation. Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol-in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution-ensures the closest possible co-operation between the criminal police authorities of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime.

A brief history of the SIYB Regional Programme
SIYB originated from business management training materials called "Look After Your Firm" which had been developed by the Swedish Employers' Confederation. During the late 1970's, the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) funded an ILO project which adapted these materials to suit the needs of small entrepreneurs in developing countries. This new material was named “Improve Your Business” (IYB). At the same time, the ILO developed a specific training methodology, which was based on participatory learning and with an action oriented approach. The IYB training materials and methodology together became the IYB programme.
1983: IYB is introduced to Africa
In 1983, the ILO established the IYB Regional Project Office for Eastern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya

    Lesotho
    History
People described as Sotho have lived in Southern Africa since at least the 10th century AD, moving throughout the high veld of the region. By the 16th century, the Sotho people had arrived in the area known now as Lesotho, marrying and intermingling with the Khoisan people, and forming small chiefdoms. Extensive trade links were established between the groups, as well as with outside people. Grain and hides, for example, were traded for iron from the Transvaal area. By the early 19th century white traders were on the scene, exchanging their ever-reliable beads for cattle. In came the Voortrekkers (Boer pioneers), and suddenly the people of the area, now called Basotholand, had to recognise that constant expansion for 300 years was placing extreme pressure on the environment. At the same time, consolidation and expansion of the Zulu state was causing a chain-reaction of violence throughout Southern Africa. Survival by the loosely organised southern Sotho society is attributed to the strong leadership of Moshoeshoe the Great. The Basotho emerged as a people around 1820 when Moshoeshoe the Great gathered the tribes scattered by Zulu raids and established a stronghold at Butha-Buthe, and later on the mountain of Thaba-Bosiu, about 30km (20mi) from what is now Maseru. By 1840 his people numbered about 40,000. Worried by the Boers, Moshoeshoe the Great enlisted British support, but the British were equally worried about Moshoeshoe, and launched an unsuccessful attack on him. When the English left defeated, the Boers pressed their claims to the land, leading to the 1858 Free State-Basotho War (won by Moshoeshoe) and another in 1865 (in which Moshoeshoe lost much of the western lowlands). In 1868, under increasing pressure from the Boers, Moshoeshoe placed the region under the protection of the British government, but as part of the deal, lost even more land to the Boers.
