The Kingdom in the Sky The Kingdom in the Sky is an apt name for Lesotho. This tiny country of only 11,840 square miles is completely surrounded by South Africa. By virtue of its topographical isolation, Lesotho has managed largely to avoid many of the recent wars, racist policies and political instability that has plagued most of the African continent this century. Lesotho: Overview
Lesotho is a very mountainous developing country in southern Africa completely surrounded by the country of South Africa. Facilities for tourists are limited. The capital city of Maseru is at 5000 ft. (1500m) above sea level, and the mountains reach to 11,400 ft. (3500m).
Visitors to the interior of Lesotho should bring clothing and equipment suitable for cold weather. In the mountains, weather conditions can deteriorate rapidly. In winter (June-October), snow will often close mountain passes, and temperatures, even in the lowlands, often drop below freezing during the night.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A passport is required, but no visa is needed for visits of 30 days or less. For more information concerning entry requirements, travelers may contact the Embassy of the Kingdom of Lesotho, 2511 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, telephone (202) 797-5533. Overseas inquiries may be made at the nearest embassy or consulate of Lesotho.
REGISTRATION AND EMBASSY LOCATION: Americans living in or visiting Lesotho are encouraged to register at the Consular Section of the U.S. Embassy and obtain updated information on travel and security within Lesotho. The U.S. Embassy is located at 254 Kingsway, Maseru West; the mailing address is P.O. Box 333, Maseru 100, Lesotho. The telephone number is 266-312-666.

Maseru - Culture The Basotho people have developed a unique culture. As one of the few African tribes living in a mountainous environment, they have made many adaptations to their conditions. The Basotho blanket is one example. All around the country you will see people dressed in woolen blankets, often with beautiful patterns. This is the ideal garment for a cold environment, and also has the versatility of keeping the rain off. Villages are often located high in the mountains, usually on the mid-levels well above the deep river valleys and the flood dangers they carry. Villages are very structured. They are made up of a number of kraals, ie. a collection of buildings belonging to one family. Some are for sleeping, some for storage and one for cooking. Each kraal will also have an enclosure for livestock. Each village has a chief, or headman, who will fall under the chief for the area. The Basotho are agriculturalists. All around the village will be many fields and these are allocated by the chief to villagers. Many crops are cultivated including maize, wheat, sorghum, beans and peas as well as vegetables such as onions and cabbage. Many local herbs are also gathered as green vegetables, which the Basotho call Moroho.
Animals are very important in Basotho society. The Basotho pony represents the best form of transport in the mountains, and donkeys are often used as pack animals. Most families will have some cattle, and oxen are used to plough the sloping mountain fields. Wool is a major source of income both from Memo sheep and mohair from Angora goats, and you will see many herds of both deep in the mountains. They are looked after by shepherds, often young boys, who live in simple huts called motebo, often perched on ridges at well over 3000m and very well hidden.

History
The library of the National University of Lesotho is named after a Mosotho author, Thomas Mofolo (1875?-1948). Mr. Mofolo's most noted work is "Chaka," a literary biography of the renowned Zulu chief. The history of the Library is closely associated with that of the University, which was initially founded as the Pius XII College, in April, 1945 ( see history of NUL below ). Since then the Library has gone through a lot of changes and developments. Its present building was built with funds provided by the World Council of Churches and the World University Services and was officially opened on 1st April, 1966.
Mission
The library mission statement (quoted from the Library Plan, which has just been prepared by the University Librarian) is as follows: As the principal information resource for the University community of staff, students and researchers, the Thomas Mofolo Library provides a dynamic information service to its clientele in order to give practical meaning to the University's purpose as a centre of excellence in learning, teaching and research.
